Nowadays they’re so many options, GNOME and Plasma are nice, but heavy, same for DDE(Deepin) and others fancy DEs I know why it’s heavy, but xfce and lxqt looks better on my PC, xfce you can make looks beauty and fast too

For the WM guys: I’ll try some day, for now only DEs :3

Samsy,

Try hyprland, learn the shortcuts, and you never want a DE again.

max,

I knew only a MW would reply lol

@SquishyPandaDev@yiffit.net avatar

Too a certain point. I’ll give you that this applies to the Debian and Ubuntu distro. Gentoo, on the other hand, is a completely different animal and will have a far greater impact on user experience than the DE.

eldain,

You look at your DE all day and your distro holds everything together. Op didn’t say distro is unimportant and I agree it makes sense for new users to look at images and videos of different desktops first, maybe try a live cd, and then choosing the backend that suits their willingness to interact with.

If your electricity and time are cheap, you want to learn and your pc-system is your playground not a productivity tool, Gentoo is a valid option. In this case, your choice of DE impacts your compile time massively and knowing alternatives beforehand gives you options.

on a related note, help I’m too used to my i3wm config and now I cant switch to wayland at all, what do I do when xorg gets fully depreciated

NotSteve_,

I’ve heard sway is a drop in replacement of i3 for wayland. Only going off what I’ve heard though since I haven’t tried it myself

rescue_toaster,

Sway is basically the wayland version of i3. I’ve switched to wayland on my new laptop and learning sway after using i3 for years has been relatively easy.

z3rOR0ne, (edited )
@z3rOR0ne@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah, the config syntax is exactly the same. The major difference is the wayland version of various programs can be hard to figure out with out some decent google-fu.

I’m on BSPWM on X11, but have been trying river wm and that is a much less friendly conversion than i3 to sway. I’d convert entirely were it not for certain applications still not quite working on wayland without considerable configuration (wacom tablet drivers don’t work, screenshottung and eyedropper tools are available but still need more work to be feature comparable with equivalent tools on X11).

And I’m using proprietary NVIDIA drivers which are currently stuttering real bad on the wlroots protocol since driver update to 545 (sway/river both stutter bad whenever lots of movement on the screen, I’ve tried many tweaks to my environment variables to no avail).

So…just gonna wait for app, wayland, nvidia devs to eventually make the migrate worth while.

darganon,

Wayland being so Nvidia hostile while Nvidia is the only name for AI is kind of a kick in the balls

NaoPb, in every time i can't remember how to use a command

I’ve never used it. Just typing /h -h --help and if that doesn’t work then I’m Googling it.

MellowSnow, (edited )

I legitimately don’t understand why people still insist on recommending it. Like it had its place, and it was awesome for what it was, but there are many better ways of displaying that info and better ways of searching for it. If it’s the only option, fine. Otherwise, I’m not parsing through that shit in a terminal.

Linkerbaan,
@Linkerbaan@lemmy.world avatar

It’s learned masochism to use the terminal for everything at this point.

ook_the_librarian,
@ook_the_librarian@lemmy.world avatar

I disagree that there are much better ways. When I have a question while I’m working in the terminal, it’s nice to have a searchable manual that’s in the terminal.

But I can certainly understand why modern manpages aren’t well-developed. That info is already somewhere else. And it’s good enough. It’s not like I’m paying people to write manpages.

“help is an invalid command. Use --help for help.”

I always feel like an idiot when a read an error message like that.

Same thing for me on Windows. Technology is just angering.

Dave,
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

Now you mention it, I have spend so many hours on Windows trying to get the damn game to work. Trying to hide run Windows games on Linux, if it doesn’t work immedietly and I can’t find easy tweaks to fix it then I just assume it doesn’t work on Linux. But when a Windows game doesn’t work on Windows, I will spent hours making it work because I know it should!

@callyral@pawb.social avatar

i thought this was about game development for a second and was confused as to why you wouldn’t be able to do that on linux

bitwolf, in I don't...

Wayland has been great for several years now. Things change, especially technology.

I always found it so strange when the biggest tech nerds get upset about change.

space, in Hey, have you ever heard of Pop!_OS?

This answer is stupid. I don’t think it’s unusual for a non-tech savvy friend who heard about Linux to ask for an opinion.

lazynooblet,
@lazynooblet@lazysoci.al avatar

If Lemmy is any example the “I use Linux” crowd is like “I’m a vegetarian”.

victorz,

I think it is unusual. As a software engineer who has a large circle of friends, loads of them know I use Linux, but literally no one cares or is curious about knowing more. And honestly I’m not interested in explaining. We talk about and do other things lol. I sometimes talk about differences and news about both with those who have jobs or interests closer to the IT business, and we have a short conversation about those news, but nobody asks me about Linux, and especially not Windows. It’s not interesting.

I like the way standardisation is going, everything is going to be on the bee standard and that that isnt being updated too well too bad. What seperates us from the windows users is we can evolve if ya look at the distro tree it looks a lot like natrual selection to me

MystikIncarnate, in Linux laptop recommendation thread🐧💻

I have a framework. The smaller one. I think they have two now. One of the older CPUs. Got it now than a year ago and it’s been solid. Disclaimer: I don’t run Linux on it, so IDK what that’s like at the moment.

I’ve used most makes and models of laptops and desktops at some point for some duration… The hazards of being in IT… I can’t recommend anything from Microsoft. Simply too hard to do anything with when anything goes wrong and you’re entirely at the mercy of MS for everything. I personally don’t like Lenovo, I’ve had a few Lenovo’s that have their PCIe slots locked to only accept specific device I.D.s in the firmware. I had to flash a hacked firmware to upgrade the wifi in one. It was an unpleasant experience. It did eventually work, but it was not fun. I also don’t care for their keyboard layouts. That’s been improved recently from what I’ve heard, I’m still equally not a fan of their systems.

I’ve had the most experience with HP and Dell, and for the most part they’re very similar. Anything from their business lines will perform quite well though graphics may only be whatever comes integrated with the CPU.

I always push towards business systems because from what I’ve seen, they’re more robust and usually don’t break nearly as fast.

I’d think about getting an eGPU for gaming since no matter how powerful the system or it’s GPU is, it will be massively outdated long before the system fails or becomes inoperable from age. With an eGPU external enclosure, you can upgrade any time you like to a desktop card for much cheaper than replacing the system. Most eGPU enclosures can also act as docking stations, providing power and even network and other things along with the graphics connection.

That’s a lot of hardware talk though. I’m not going to tell you what to pick, I’m just making the best recommendations I can given the information available to me.

Good luck

Diplomjodler3, in Linux laptop recommendation thread🐧💻

If you just want stuff to work with minimal hassle, Linux Mint is an excellent choice. PopOS is also often recommended, especially for laptops. If you really want to get into the nitty gritty, something Arch based might fit the bill.
