It’s not about prime real estate, it’s about increasing the redundancy of humanity’s survival. Two planets are better than one.

Jaytreeman,

In order to colonize mars, having a good space station in orbit would help out immensely. We're talking big enough to stretch out and hold a few hundred people.
The station would need to grow crops and have minor but flexible manufacturing.
At that point, why would you colonize mars vs just make more stations?

Urist,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

For real, resource extraction is a big one. Finding ice means they can make, besides water, oxygen and rocket fuel. Not to mention that shelters for radiation are incredibly hard to make without a huge amount of mass, which we cannot efficiently get into orbit without a space elevator. Hence being able to extract it from the location of the colony, say dig into the ground or build thick walls with bricks made from soil, is necessary for long term survival of the inhabitants. I think it is cool that due to these reasons having air balloons over Venus might even be a better option due to it having a protective atmosphere.

Jaytreeman,

You can make a radiation field by running a large motor that would save you from the solar radiation.
In space you always have access to the sun. A cheap form of power. You need a lot more batteries if you're on the planet.

Venus is a much better idea over mars.

Urist,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

Didn’t know that it was feasible to create a radiation field by running a large motor. Not that I doubt you, but if you have a source I would be very happy to read more about it.

Hey Hexbear, if you’re dropping by, let me know when Russian and Chinese workers seize the means of production.

In the meantime I’m sitting here oppressed in Norway.

Urist,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

Bruh, we have oppressed people in Norway. Did you forget that our own supreme court ruled that some of our wind mills at Fosen are in violation of UN law of civil and political rights (source in Norwegian). That was two years ago and they are still standing, which is especially bad due to the historical repression and attempts at ethnic cleansing of Sámi people in Norway, that was going on for a disturbingly long time. Now, as a quick caveat I will add that on a global scale we are doing pretty alright. However, that you are fortunate and well, for which I am glad, does not mean that the sentiment of the meme is wrong. Since the 70s much of the good systems we built have been demolished by laissez-faire politics and politicians, like your beloved “Jern-Erna”, lowering corporate taxes and allowing for privatization of public services (our railway system, healthcare and so on). I also don’t think many people from Hexbear are deluded enough to believe in imminent revolution in Russia nor conflating the Russian government with the Communist Party of China (though I might suspect you do), making your comment either worthless or in bad faith (we both know it is both). Either way, I support seizing the means of production and voted for my convictions today. Even though I believe I probably fundamentally disagree with you, I hope you did too. Leave the “all communists are tankie fascists” idea at home please. It only makes you look ignorant and a bad representative for our nice little country.

We’ve been warned, I expected performance to be rough but ~35fps on a 4090 is a new low for me.

Honytawk,

Well, maybe high settings was created for a 6090 or even 7090?

I've played some action games in the teens and was fine with it. Maybe lower frame rate at low resolution (1080) isn't as apparent as the high 4K, but I've never understood why people can't play with frame rates still far faster than film (if it's truly refreshing the frames completely and not ripping the picture of course). I suppose this argument goes the same direction as the vinyl/CD one, with both opinions dead sure they're right.

If the game is handling variations of frame rates during play badly, that's a different story. The goal is for the player to not realize there's a change and stay focused on the game.

Klear,

I started out playing Doom on a 386, in a tiny tiny viewport, and until recently my hardware was apways behind the curve. I remember playing Oblivion at 640 x 380. And enjoying foggy weather in San Andreas because the reduced draw distance made my fps a lot better.

Over the years I’ve trained my brain to do amazing real time upsacaling, anti-aliasing, hell, even frame generation. nVidia has nothing on the neural network in my head.

But not everyone has this experience and smooth FPS is always better, even if I can handle teerible performance if the game is any good.

9bananas,

simple explanation: people get used to their monitors’ frame rate.

if all you’ve been using is a 60Hz display, you won’t notice a difference down to 30-40 fps as much as you would when you’ve been using a 144Hz display.

our brains notice differences much more easily than absolutes, so a larger difference in refresh rate produces a more negative experience.

think about it like this:

The refresh rate influences your cursor movements.

so if a game runs slower than you’re used to, you’ll miss more of your clicks, and you’ll need to compensate by slowing down your movements until you get used to the new refresh rate.

this effect becomes very obvious at very low fps (>20fps). it’s when people start doing super slow movements.

same thing happens when you go from 144Hz down to, say, 40Hz.

that’s an immediately noticeable difference!

MudMan,
@MudMan@kbin.social avatar

Some of the settings are messed up, I think. It definitely can run faster than that by toning down some settings on that hardware. They really should have changed the defaults or straight up removed some visual settings, given what they do to the game. In my experience, the volumetric clouds, reflections and GI presets are all messed up and cost a disproportionate amount of performance when maxed out.

ApathyTree,
@ApathyTree@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I’ve served food and it turns out it’s literally impossible to find a time when the table doesn’t have a mouthful, and actually make it to the table before one happens.

If you are by yourself sure, but 2+, can’t be done. Mostly because of conversation - one talks the other eats, then swap. I’ve tried many many times (when slow) because it bugs the shit out of me when it happens to me… which is always.

johnthedoe,

That’s a good point. I am always vacuuming food in at a constant rate when the food comes.

Well, you don’t have to. If you want to just save enough to buy some land you could work for just a few years then homestead from there.

EvolvedTurtle,

Still a lot of work tho But also very tempting

c0mpost,

Although not very realistic for most people in most countries. In my social reality, buying land and conditions to homestead depends on having a fat inheritance or having an exceptionally good salary.

    Most of us would probably just be fine with PWAs, but the marketing branch says no… They need everything possible about you, need the app to run at startup and send you notifications at least every 4 hours…

    BubblyMango,

    How can an android app get all the info about me if it has no permissions?

    ritchie,
    @ritchie@lemmy.world avatar

    There’s the info you are willingly sharing through the app, no permission for that. There are really a few apps that require no permissions, usually they always need access to something. E.g. the LG app for washing machines that will only run if you register and account AND give permission to make phone calls, when you only want to download washing programs…
