My high school Spanish teacher said she learned English after immigrating to the US by watching English soap operas like Days of Our Lives and things like that. I’m sure the same could be done but not sure how exactly. It would probably take a lot of active listening.
My MiL moved here from India and watched soap operas not just to learn idiomatic English but to learn how to dress for cold weather.
Growing up in Colombo and Chennai, it never got cold enough to need socks; she was in Midland Ontario and the soaps taught her how to wear snow boots, winter jackets, scarves, wool hats.
I had a roommate who could decently understand japanese this way. We had him look away and translate for us a few times and he was spot on. I’m sure if he put effort into speaking it he could have learned to do that as well.
At this point I can’t stand to hear anything past/present from that band at all anymore. It’s solely because of Keidis. I have no problem with the guys making the actual music. I hate his voice and I hate his stupid lyrics. From what I’ve read he is also not a cool guy.
I think Flea is the greatest bass player of all time and I’d argue that Chad Smith is one of the best drummers of all time, but they make music for a band lead by a douche bag.
As a casual fan, enlighten me, why’s he a douche? I loved the Chilli Peppers in middle /high school, but haven’t really paid any attention to them since.
Flea does stuff outside of the Chili Peppers and I’d say, yes, he’s better than Les Claypool
I guess really it depends on how you classify things and what you’re weighting the opinion on.
I personally think someone like Tim Henson is talented, but makes what I call musical gibberish, stuff that’s wildly technically impressive but sounds like math music from an AI chat bot. I value the ability to do more with less, over ‘notes per minute’ or ‘pinch harmonics per minute’
So I’m valuing the overall digestibility of the music created and not necessarily the raw finger on fret talent. I think Flea is a better musician overall.
Opinions are subjective so this isn’t a ‘debate me because I know I’m right’ type of post, everyone is entitled to their opinions.
I don’t think Flea is better than Les, but I can totally understand such an opinion. They’re both awesome but, in my opinion, Les Claypool is (even) more unique and innovative than Flea.
About Tim Henson…I disagree 200% even though he’s not exactly my preference.
Tim Henson is trash, imo, for the reasons you described. A product of the tik tok era where appearances and ego are the only factors considered, leaving any substance as the happenstance of an anomaly.
It’s amazing that Chad Smith, Flea and John Frusciante are all at top of their respective instruments, in a band led by a guy who isn’t even the best shitty rapper.
It’s the default browser on my phone so all link clicks in apps (like the one I’m using now) get a fresh, zero cookie session which reduces tracking. I read or watch, hit back, session and cookies destroyed, off I go on my merry way.
If I want to open a link on a site that I want to be logged in on then I long press and open it in normal Firefox.
