Oddly enough that’s an average of 10 points per comment.
Also I can’t see total up votes in Sync, or I haven’t figured out where that is, so I don’t know if the total karma is correct, but I can see they’ve only made 27 comments in 4 months.
Are you sure boost calculates it correctly? I remember some llemming trying to do it earlier but said it wasn’t federated correctly since total karma has been a non-goal for devs.
Jk, I can’t hate something I’ve never done. I understand that its expensive, and often consists of short bursts of fun followed by lots of waiting. I’ll probably give it a go once.
It’s an investment at first, if you want to go a lot. but once you have the gear it’s only about $50 a day to get 6+ hours of skiing in, or if you rent about $100 a day for rented gear and tickets. Lifts only take like 10-15 minutes to get you to the top of the mountain and you can hit 3 runs or more on the way down. You’ll spend more time actually skiing than waiting if you go to a modern mountain with the fast lifts. And the exhilaration you get from bombing down the mountain is unmatched by anything else. On top of the fresh air and beautiful views, it is pure joy.
I think there aren’t as many places to ski around Portland, so the ones that do exist are packed, I’ve read consistently that most of the time, you’re waiting to take the lift, waiting to do your run, and then back to waiting for the lift. But if you don’t have a 9-5 you can get out there when others are working and its great.
Also, $100 for a day of entertainment is a splurge. I have a decent income and probably only spend that much on a day-activity once every quarter or 2.
So do the new posts and everything. But Reddit is a shithole and Omegle got sued to death, online gaming is either a full time job or a money sink, streaming services start to cancel out each other and most of the regular games and their performance suck ass.
Indie games are the only thing keeping gaming alive for me, for the most part. All the AAA games I play are older titles. Doing the GTAV story with a trainer has been a pretty fun time lately for me.
Wait, I just want to make sure I’m getting this. You’re going through five converters before plugging into the tv? Counting the computer->USBc as a converter…
Technically yes. In reality it’s just 2 “real” converters who both need their own power supply. Once from digital to HD analogue, and then from that to SD. For input lag, it’s a lot less than the 20 ms of input lag the HDMI 2 input of my Sony Bravia TV.
Same here. I like the idea of Lemmy but the decentralization makes it really difficult to find the content I want. Reddits centralization, while causing some problems, definitely made it easy to find communities. That lack of ease is what makes Lemmy not as easy to use for new people.
Have you checked out !lemmy411? For some reason I don’t see it mentioned or linked to much, but it’s basically that, which I think would feel much more approachable to new people than pointing them to tools like Lemmyverse (as much as I do really appreciate it).
Another good one for sharing communities you’ve stumbled across would be !wowthislemmyexists.
There’s also the problem where I totally want to start a community (for example: Marble Racing), but I don’t know where a good home would be for it and I don’t think my home instance would be a good home.
I think it does a bit. The obvious one would be for porn on general purpose instances. Alternatively, my primary instance for example is a bit of a niche one related to reading, so a sports or politics community could feel disjointed especially for the admins/mods who manage the community.
Same here. I lurk more on Lemmy but if I want to discuss some niche topic then Reddit is so easy to I don’t use that fucking app though, website or 3rd party.
Try Deep Rock Galactic! It is neither a full time job or a money sink. Any purchases are purely cosmetic, seasons are entirely free and there are regular updates.
“I am somehow less concerned with the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain, than the near certainty that men and women of equal talent have died toiling in cotton fields and sweatshops” (and prison labor)
His family got rich of the vodka since they basically had the monopoly on the vodka trade, they earned a shit ton of money of Russian state liquor. And by keeping the populace in a constant drunk state it made sure they stayed in power. Kinda ironic that his alcohol ban probably started political unrest and eventually the fall of the empire.
A terrorist attack that targeted civilians exclusively and subsequently slowly killing hostages while using them for propaganda videos and shooting at fleeing Palestinians is not “fighting for freedom”.
Educate yourself on the entire conflict before you publicly support terrorism.
Don’t worry i read the long list of Israel crimes, saw enough video, images of what’s Israel has done to Palestinians to be well educated. At least enough that you’re bullshit pro Isreal propaganda doesn’t work.
Sorry not playing your stupid game of who is worse and whataboutism
Both are doing horrible things to people. We should highlight each of those. If you think one action justify the other, you will get in a vicious circle And we should fight for human rights, not against each other.
Hamas are fighting for their freedom. They’re killing/kidnapping civilians because Isreal has been doing it for decades and been cheered for it. Massacre can go both ways.
It’s called fight for freedom. The fuck are they supposed to do ? accept being massacre , just wait for the next bomb to kill their entire family ? Wtf ?
That’s a very difficult question to answer but they’re doing it your way and now there’s just more massacre on both sides with seemingly no end in sight. Is it really freedom if everyone is dead?
Have you ever read about any colonized country ? The colonizers commited the most heinous acts to the natives and when they inevitably insurge they’d massacre them. These countries are free because they fought until they become free. Death is inevitable until freedom is gained.
I see your point but there’s gotta be a better example. The natives didn’t have any allies that could stand up to the colonizers or even a way to ask for outside help. Today, we have the internet.
I’m just spitballing here in my privileged American home, but if Hamas was vocal about not stooping to Israel’s civilian-killing level, and did major damage to a political building without harming anyone, that could have given Palestinians more sympathy on the world stage. Even if it’s the thing that “must be done for survival”, it’s really hard to be on the side of innocent killing. I personally can’t be on either side of this conflict, and many feel the same.
So the the several decades of massacre, ethnic cleansing , forced land seizing and house demolishing to give to fucking settlers that Isreal has been commiting towards the Palestinian was okey ? When palistinians attack the fucking settlers that stole their land it’s too much ?
You didn’t read my post. I’m on nobody’s side. What Isreal has done is 100% not okay, and at scale much worse than what Hamas has collectively done in response.
I read it. Not siding with the ones that are fighting for freedom because they’re fighting for freedom doesn’t make sense to me. Have you ever read about any colonized country ? Reading about the fight of the colonized for freedom and the tactics used by colonizers to delegitimize their fights from killing civilians as punishment, calling the freedom fighters terrorists to playing the victim and lying to achieve that status. It’s eye opening.
If Palestine continues with their eye for an eye approach, they are going to lose their fight for freedom. They need strong allies, like every other country fighting for their freedom. Ukraine is the best example I have, but I know it’s not the same. I hope Palestine gets their freedom my friend, it doesn’t look good so far. This is the last comment I’m gonna make.
but if Hamas was vocal about not stooping to Israel’s civilian-killing level, and did major damage to a political building without harming anyone, that could have given Palestinians more sympathy on the world stage.
How? their rockets barely do anything. The only way for them to do damage is a ground invasion, and for that to happen they'd need the help of radicalized Gazans, and those Gazans will 100% do harm to civilians.
Plus "sympathy on the world stage" isn't worth two Qasam rockets.
Even if it’s the thing that “must be done for survival”, it’s really hard to be on the side of innocent killing. I personally can’t be on either side of this conflict, and many feel the same.
It doesn't matter, if you're a citizen of the US or Europe, then you're automatically assigned to the occupation terrorists side by your government. Hamas wasn't looking for your support, because you can do nothing, only your glorious supreme leader can.
Your argumentation is pretty shortened. Its the same argument if somebody say, Israel is fighting for its freedom after anti semitic movements and nazism in central and eastern europe.
There are no rights, when it comes to harming innocent civilians.
Edit: On both sides of course, same.goes for the army of Israel and not helping civilians.
Isreal is killing civilians deliberately to punish them for their fight freedom. Colonizers in the past used this tactic with every country they colonized. The colonizer must not feel safe in the land he’s stealing. The colonizer need to fucking leave.
Earth is dying, ressources depleting and temperature are rising. Do you expect a bright future ahead ? By 2050, the Middle East will have unbearable heat waves and it will be getting worse from there. It’s there now , yes, but doubt it’ll be there in the next century. Most humanity either, but that’s a bonus.
you mean attacking military infrastructure one year+ of shelling?
That's not as bad as 17years of starvation and oppression.
Ukraine is very organized compared to Hamas; they have an actual government that's allowed to function and can instruct it's troops.
If Russia was surrounding Ukraine while the US wasn't giving aid to them, the Ukrainian government would either not exist, or become a "terrorist group" that's divided into a dozen militants that are barely organized. An attack formed by this group would be devastating to Russian civilians, because even if the head of this organization intends on not hurting civilians, will the militant groups that are mostly comprised of radicalized Ukrainians looking for revenge care?
Thats something completely different. If Ukraine did or does war crimes, they should be condemned.
Ukraine should start committing war crimes, maybe that would get them more US support.
Or they would get completely wiped out. Like look at the occupied territory of Ukraine.
Oh, so if you are fighting a bigger country and don't have allies, just die. Very smart move.
If the purpose of the comment is to show that the occupation is being merciful by not wiping out Palestine, then you might be ignoring that they're doing just that.
Just look at how much space settlements are taking up in the West bank. They're just doing it more slowly because they'll have useful agents like you to defend them after Palestinians inevitably resort to violence.
The US wouldn't even condemn the building of these settlements, even though their condemnation would do absolutely nothing.
Yea lets commit war crimes, who doesn’t want to live in such a world.
Defending what? Is it their land they're defending? Last time I checked Russia was claiming that the land belonged either to them or to an independent state. That would be attacking.
Yeah, the fact that your president sided with the colonizer was the most ironic shit ever . You’re fight for freedom is a terrorist act to Russia but i don’t side with a colonizer ever.
i’m not defending anything, i have no knowledge of the situation in israel and am not qualified to talk about the good and bad, but i’ve seen what hamas did, and i see that as a terrorism. and i will not let the comparison of us and hamas slide.
Being awake at night is a very nice time of peace. No responsibilities, noone wants something from you, you can just be in the crushing silence of your own thoughts
Honestly I recently switched to vyvanse and I don’t actually smoke to get high (at least not until the kids are in bed). I just microdose a bit throughout the day and it balances out the vyvanse. Like, the stimulants alone are just a little bit too much for me. The combo, though, I can dial in just right.
But weed alone always made me fixate on arithmetics. And then stims turn that up to 11.
Matrix would be fantastic. Phone number accounts hosted on the carrier’s instance, and can federate with other instances.
Something like (for an American phone number): @0014204206969:matrix.att.com and have each carrier share which phone numbers are assigned to which carrier in some common protocol so all you would need is a phone number.
my whole experience with matrix is deeply disappointing. devices getting out of sync, not being able to decrypt messages, missing notifications and that fucking mark as read not working are daily problems
dig deeper and you’ll find the causes of the problems, which are disturbing. e.g. a json string is hashed (however 2 equal json objects can be the same while their strings are very different)
the only reason I still use it is a room I want to be part of
I laughed way too hard at this. But seriously most antiquities need to be returned to their places of origin. It’s 2023 how is this still a conversation to be had?
The problem is that you have governments like the Taliban in Afghanistan, pre-9/11, destroying ancient statues, trying to erase the history they don’t agree with.
Instead of returning stolen antiquities, countries that are currently in possession of them should be required to send an equivalent value of their own country’s treasure to be displayed in the victim country’s museums.
Imagine having to go to Egypt to see the crown jewels of England.
I absolutely agree that there are some locations that are too volatile/corrupt to have items returned. I never would have thought to have equivalent items sent out of county for display, that would really drive the emotional point home.
Some artifacts were acquired legitimately either as gifts or through purchase. So have no reason to be returned.
Some states are too unstable or corrupt to be able to return them, such as Syria or Egypt. And there was a case recently where France returned some artifical to an afircsn state just for the president (? King?) To keep them for himself.
Some artifacts don’t have an easy place to return them too. Like take the kohinoor diamond, do you give it back to the Indian government? The Pakistani government? The Afgan government? The decendents of of the Maharaja that signed over possession to the Queen, or the descendents of the people he stole it from? Or the people that person stole it from? And so on and so on. And at this point it’s more historically important to the UK than it is to any other country.
Which brings me to the next point, some artifacts are important because of their history after being taken. The Rosetta stone is a perfect example of this. When it was discovered by the French it was rubble being used to construct a crude wall. If the French didn’t recognise it might br important it would have been lost to history. And if it wasn’t translated by a French archaeologist after the British took it, then it would still be insignificant, as the are other identical stele in Egypt and its actual cobtents are pretty mundane and unimportant. Literally the only thing that makes the rosetta stone significant is its history AFTER it was taken from Egypt.
And finally some cases the artifacts are only their because that country got invaded. Like a lot of roman artifacts in the British museum were brought by invading Romans. I don’t think anyone sensible thinks they should be returned to Italy right?
Absolutely, and all the people that now have the artifacts benefit in keeping the status quo, so there is effectively little push to solve a very complex problem.
You make a very well reasoned point, and I don’t disagree with you. I can see why museum curators won’t release antiquities because in your examples establishing provenance and actual logistics would be a nightmare. Not to mention the precedent of giving away some country’s items but not others. But, at this point in time it’s also a point of contention, rightfully so, that items obtained are still viewed as the property of the British museum in what amounts to a trophy case of imperialism. Ultimately we are in a period of growing pains as society and this is just another awkward period we have to get through to move forward.
