Hereâs what this bill does for children: reduces pedos from sharing images of them yay! Hereâs also what it does for Children: un-encrypts their chats so pedos know what they are doing, where they are, who they are with, what they like, their vulnerabilities and much much more. Trading safety for a viewing crackdown. Congratulations
Iâd like it if there was a 3rd web. Not normie web, not dark web, but 90âs-2000 web where it felt like anything could happen and you needed some skill and willpower to get online. That way you had to earn it and so did the others, so there was a lot less marketing, propaganda and conspiracy theory on it.
I donât know what the rules or parameters would have to be to re-initiate that now.
PS just like the joining process on Lemmy filters out the lazy people without much initiative to tinker and find new places to hang out before they are cool and streamlined.
People have to feel funded, safe, and comfortable to make stuff for free to share with others, right now everyone feels like they need to make the absolute most money possible.
What will make a more neutral internet is a better world. Our virtual one and our real one are pretty interlinked and one can not be poisoned without it spreading to the other.
Early 2000 web was the best web. Our student flat had just moved from dial up to ASDL so download speed felt incredible. I would StumbleUpon new an fantastic websites all night long. Play Flash games for hours. Or with friends, gross ourselves out on rotten dot com. TPB and Limewire to build my music library, but always seeding above 1 of course because sharing is caring. And not forgetting the chatroomsâŠ
When Jack from Lost said âWe have to go back!!â, this is what he was talking about.
You had to work for your series, movies and music. You had to know what you want to obtain it. You werenât force-fed content you never asked for. You really think thereâs no more good music? There is but being bombarded with the commercial sh*t makes you wary of searching more of it.
You had to work for it to get online and have stuff work, so youâd have to show determination. Which would mean youâd understand the value of access to information and communication. Now youâre bombarded with contradictory information pretty much constantly without even asking, accessing info isnât the problem anymore, it becomes an effort to keep any focus or quality of information whatsoever. And thatâs a soft skill.
And lastly, politics and big corporations now live on the internet with us. Their target audiences are those most intellectually defenseless people. But basically the whole internet has become centered around those. Because they canât discern and are basically technologically illiterate and donât understand how easy it is to feed them terrible commercials, propaganda and misinformation.
The internet becomes overregulated because of those users, and we get bombarded with marketing and politics because of them too. Itâs become a shit show and all you can do is navigate and use it extremely selectively. Remember, these ânormiesâ are the parents of the 20-30 year Olds who once judged them for spending too much time on their PCs and phones.
So, we need a new internet community, with barriers against ânormiesâ, so that only people with tech knowledge or friends of such can get in? Pretty much sounds like weâre already here. A few years ago I wouldâve said âtry the dark webâ but TOR browserâs pretty much made that easy. Plus bitcoinâs way too volatile to spend now, and the eth rates are ridiculous. But, if you ask for shady, you get shady.
Nowadays, I recommend decentralized networks and self-hosting wherever possible. I personally canât do it due to my living conditions, but as soon as I can break free of this place I will absolutely have the best home setup I can get at a reasonable price, and Iâll donate my excess compute time to BOINC.
Clone Wars did a great job portraying Anakin's gradual slide. There was nuance and plenty of exposure of the good parts of his character. His friendship with Obi-Wan was in evidence. His relationship with Padme was believable.
The fact that post-pubescent prequel-Anakin was ever trusted by anyone is at best evidence of how the dark side clouds perception.
In the prequels, from EPII he continuously felt like someone who should clearly be a Sith being shoehorned into being a Jedi. His friendship with Obi-Wan existed in name only, and his "romance" with Padme was in fact not a better romance than Twilight. (And that's saying something.)
OG fans waited decades to see Vader's backstory, and what we got was about the least rewarding most hamfisted and uninteresting portrayal of that backstory that could have been achieved. Decades of fan appetite regarding that backstory, possibly the only time such a thing has been maintained in the history of cinema, or likely will be again, and Lucas gave us Jar-Jar, cringe dialog, limp acting, and endless CGI.
D&D royally fucked up with GoT, but using the prequels to shine a light on that reads like something from The Onion.
The whole point of it is that whatever you described...
It's only a matter of degree though, at best. The three movies OP refers to were absolute shit in their own way. OP could have done a like to like comparison with Clone Wars and GoT and had a meme that made much more sense.
Meanwhile, I think there's a credible argument that the prequels (you do know what I'm describing, right?) are not in the slightest better than the last season of GoT (if we ignore their contribution to the meme-o-sphere), making OP fairly weak, and in an almost Onion-like way.
I used to moderate several subs with over 2M subscribers and while being a Digital Janitor can take a lot of time and effort at the end of the day its just volunteer labor and with Reddit in particular itâs volunteer labor to help a commercial entity.
Society would be better off if these kinds of mods would use the time to volunteer at a soup kitchen or something.
Working for free for a large corporation is just sad. Whatâs even weirder is that this person acknowledges that it is basically a job, but doesnât mind not getting paid for it. I think most people that spend ridiculous amounts of time working for a big corporation for free donât have the understanding that it is basically a job.
Agreed, that type of person seems to me like someone who associates their job with their identity. Doesnât help that our identities are almost exclusively linked with our occupation but anyway or that Reddit takes advantage of people who do.
Odd that the people who question vaccines are the same people who donât question the medicines they put into their mouths when they get sick. Do they know that vaccines and medicines are researched and manufactured in a similar way?
They probably should question them. Even something as seemingly benign as Paracetamol is not without its issues if used too often, or after alcohol. It can do serious harm. Most medicine can.
Another fun medicine fact. Australia banned the sale of pseudoephedrine from store shelves quite some years ago to try and reduce domestic amphetamine production. Ever since, all of the major pharma brands have sold phenylephrine based cold and flu medicine as a replacement. Our Therapeutic Goods Administration recently found that this preparation is no better than placebo. Weâre talking about a billion dollar industry that has been knowingly selling snake oil for ten years.
I guess what Iâm saying is a healthy dose of skepticism and knowledge seeking should be applied to anything you are putting in your body or exchanging money for. The pharmaceutical industry are not saints. Theyâre just as driven by profit incentives as every other business.
I donât think itâs some conspiracy that they have known and hid it. And at least in the states you can still get the real stuff behind the counter too with ID.
Iâm not discrediting anything you said though just adding on.
This ^. There are so many medications out there that either do nothing, or the side effects are worse than what theyâre treating. Pay attention to what youâre taking, and look into everything. The Pharma industry is about money. Thatâs it. Money. They donât care about making you better, they care about what kind of profit they can make off of a new drug. Thereâs not a single pharma company that can be trusted. And this isnât only drugs that they are more worried about making money on, vaccines too. You donât really think the pharma companies came out with a COVID vaccine because it was best for humanity do you? They knew the government would pay whatever they asked for the vaccines, so they pushed them out as fast as they could. Work/doesnât work? Doesnât matter, as long as they made a profit.
Add statins to your list. After taking statins for 10 years, statistically, you can expect to live 1 day longer. But until death, youâre likely to experience crippling side effects.
strange that people forgot about H1N1 vaccine that they should rush on the first experimental shit - created 3 month after first chinese cases).
strange that people doesnât get that the vaccine campaign started when the virus were not anymore as strong and the deaths were already reducing.
strange that people canât read stats and demographics, why injecting our kids?!
strange that people doesnât think that the lack of early support could lead to stronger illness development if not, death.
my friend got Covid (alpha), it was pretty bad but he also got nothing as treatment, just basic painkiller and O2, nothing else. Fortunately for him, he was in his mid 40 and strong, âjustâ ended up with a hole in his lungs due to excessive O2.
AND Finally, the binary vision that people against Vaxzevria and co are against vaccines is highly infuriating to me. Get you shot and leave me alone.
Strange how you apparently never thought to ask yourself âwhat if Iâm wrong and the entire medical field is right?â
The lies youâre spreading kill people. This essentially makes you a murderer. Great job spreading vaccine misinformation. Thereâs a special place in hell for people like you.
Strange that people think that the COVID-19 vaccine is ârushedâ (it is not, the technology is 30 years old), when many other drugs were also rushed. Strange that most drugs have side effects but people only question when it is the vaccines that show it. Strange that the same people never question chemotherapy. Strange that they also donât question the potential of addiction from painkillers and opioid-based medicines despite overprescription leading to opioid epidemic in the United States. The same people would also probably demand for antibiotics on common flu, even though antibiotics only work on bacterial infections, and not on viral ones such as the common cold, which is now resulting to concern of evolution of antibiotic-resistant diseases.
It is though people prefer the comfort of therapeutic medicines, even if the efficacy is little or perceived, and regardless of side effects, instead of the feverish side effects that vaccines could give despite the overall benefits outweighing the risk of getting full blown sickness without taking it. It is though people are myopic, hedonistic creatures of comfort who would forgo long term safety for short term convenience.
I really doubt weâd survive in the next 100 years.
People (idiots) prefer therapeutic to preventative because of shitty/misattributed confirmation bias. If they get the shots and donât get sick, itâs not because of the shots, itâs because they werenât ever going to get sick anyway. If they get sick, take something, and get better, itâs because of whatever they took. They canât see the vaccine helping them, so it isnât happening, and if it isnât happening, then itâs worthless, and if itâs worthless but someoneâs trying to âmakeâ you take it anyway, itâs cause they have an ulterior motive.
Additionally, antivaxxers group all vaccines as if theyâre all the same. âThe vaccine on malaria didnât work? The vaccine on polio must be the sameâ. But they would not apply the same incorrect conclusion to medicine. âOh the immunotherapy on cancer didnât work. I will take painkillers to ease the pain at leastâ. Medicines and vaccines are not all the same and this doesnât register to many.
Anti-vaxxers arenât anti-science because that would imply they understand science. Theyâre anti-knowledge and anti-reason which is far more dangerous.
I explained to my cat before his surgery that if he didn't stay a little boy forever, his instincts would drive him to leave home and the life of constant play and treats and being allowed to sleep under the covers with me at night, and he would murder and pillage every creature in the neighborhood and would be an ecological disaster instead of my cute fuzzy boy.
I took his purrs and headbonks as consent. Years later he still seems happy with his lot.
Dude have you seen what Hamas did yesterday? Kidnapping children, women, elders. Even burnt houses to get families out of their homes to kidnap them. No matter how sympathetic you are towards palestinians, no one with a right conscious can support them.
Israel has been doing this shit for decades. Itâs just blowback of unending oppression by Israel. People in Palestine can either wait and get genocided or fight back.
Uh, almost certainly they have done that or something akin to it, I wouldnât defend either side, theyâve both done countless atrocities to one another and people from outside.
No, they just do this to Palestinian civilians, but since they donât have blue eyes and blond hair racists such as yourself donât consider them to be people.
Lol yup Israel has been taking down buildings for years taking peopleâs life, history and financial gain and turn it to rubble because someone in the building may have helped hamas. No trial, no questioning, just a small bomb going off on your roof too warn you to run the fuck away before you die in a collapsed building.
I absolutely HATE Walmart. I should hate them for their exploitation of workers, their shit products or any number of their shit corporationâs dealings. But the thing that drew the final blow for me was an incident dealing with their self checkout and their system of ascribing guilt for theft without any due process.
I went to a store about half an hour away from where I lived as they arenât common near where Iâm from. Bought several items including a marker board. Checked out using self checkout. Marker board was too big to fit into a bag, so I set it aside to bring with me after scanning everything. Well, as luck would have it, when I got home I realized I never brought my marker board home but I had paid for it and had the receipt to prove it. I called the store and explained the situation to the manager at customer service who assured me I could come to the store and pickup the item, no troubles.
So I drove back up to the store hour round trip. I get there and the customer service line is about 15 people deep at this point. Only one person behind the counter. After about 30 min waiting in line, I finally get up to the counter and explain my issue, showing the receipt and that I had spoken to a manager earlier and that they said to come in and it would be fine to pickup the marker board. Well, not only was it not fine, but then the woman behind the counter, after having a discussion with her security dept over the phone who âreviewed the footageâ from my checkout, decided that I had actually attempted to put something into my pocket to steal something!? Incredulously, I asked her why on earth I would go through the trouble to come all this way back to the store for an item that I clearly paid for along with about $60 worth of other stuff which again, also clearly paid for, if I had stolen something!? She refused to budge and I was honestly shocked she had the audacity to accuse me of theft 100% seriously. I left that store and havenât set foot in a Walmart since. Itâs been 4 years and itâs the best consumer decision Iâve ever made.
I lived with my partner and her parents for a couple of years. At some point her mom started getting more groceries from Walmart; around that time I started having badddd reactions to the food. She doesnât get groceries from Walmart anymore.
Oh, absolutely. No hate to the customer service woman. I realize she was probably under pressure from the powers that be, but nevertheless, she enforced the absurd policy (understandably, girlâs gotta eat), didnât make the experience any more palatable for me, however.
Go ask the Palestinians if US intervention has been a big misunderstanding and theyâre actually looking out for them and bringing them democracy like they say
