I was totally thinking about how these shows must be faked in some way. I just figured they payed people to go looking, despite the fact they actually have a nice enough home(s) and don’t actually need to move.
I always figured they paid people to act excited on The Price is Right.
Imagine if someone didn’t even want to be there and just went to the studio because their family surprised them with tickets while they were on vacation. Then they get picked and super grudgingly go through the whole game.
Nah, they just wouldn’t choose someone who wasn’t excited to be there. Pretty sure they interview everyone before hand and watch them before filming before deciding who to pick. It’s definitely not just random.
My coworkers write me “hi, do you have 5 min?” without telling me what it is because they know I would drop what I’m doing and directly focus on the new task. (It’s how I am, and they know how to deal with it). With a little hi… they give me the option to say “sure, lets talk in 10 min” and finish what I’m doing.
But even “hi do you have 5 minutes” is more than I get from one team. I get “hi” and then they wait for my reply before anything else. If I don’t reply right away, nothing, silence.
Idk those nights when you’re partying for hours and the drugs are wearing off and noone seems to have anymore, and the drinks are empty, and the dealers have turned their phones off, then you hear the birds start chirping and the sky starts getting brighter and you look at yourself in the mirror and see a gaunt pale face and wish someone would just shoot you because you just spent all your money plus some you didn’t have, and did a bunch of regretful shit. Yeah I don’t reminisce about those mornings.
I hate that people treat the US as if it doesn’t have a wide variety of accents. I can drive an hour in any direction and the people sound different than where I live. A lot of states have their own accents, and there are regional accents within them. I live in Illinois and people from No. IL and Central IL sound completely different from people in So. IL.
Accents get even more differentiated the further North or South you go. PNW sounds different than NE. Etc. The real difference is that a lot of the accents in the US aren’t based on indigenous languages spoken in that region (even though some are), they’re largely based on the group of Europeans that settled in the region.
Americans are very very good at code switching, which is why I think a lot of people think there are only one or two accents.
One thing that came as a culture shock for me is that I'm used to driving like 4 hours to see relatives. And this is usually several times a year. Then I heard from some Britons that they have rarely visit their relatives who are only like a hour drive away. Really messed me up the first time.
A misconception about microwaves is that they need around 1000W to actually do something, anything lower than 800 makes the waves completely ineffective. When you turn your microwave to 500W, what it actually does is lie to you while microwaving only half of the time instead by cycling on and off. You can usually hear this change in the sound it makes cause it will switch between the 1kW and the ventilator. 🙂
Pretty sure everyone knows that the power setting on the microwave just changes the duty cycle of the magnetron. I’ve never seen a microwave specify wattage when selecting power, usually 1-10 or 1-100, no lies involved. What it does is allows the heat more time to evenly distribute through your food while cooking with the same amount of energy. That super hot bowl and tepid soup won’t have as much of a difference when it takes twice as long to cook. Hot spots don’t get a chance to get as hot. Psychologically it’s easier too because let’s be honest, no one’s waiting 5 minutes after that timer goes off for the heat to settle
Yeah… That’s because lemmy.ml IS lemmygrad.ml. There’s a heavy theory that they slid in and took over the domain.
I posted a meme making fun of Disney having multiple “First” gay characters. The title made a joke about how it’s the first character in China everytime as the character is deleted.
Every time I hear some flowery Health Insurance commercial end with something like “we’re different and we care about your health”. I want to scream “So you’ll stop lobbying against single-payer health*care, the system proven to be cheaper and more effective by 95% of modern nations!?”
I’m fifty. My wife is 49, her friends and my life long friends are around the same age and they definitely include a few grandmas. In 2023 fifty does not look like fifty did when I was a teen. The amount of smoking hot women in their fifties that pass for later thirties and early forties is incredibly high.
EDIT: Case in point, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May. Why Aunt May ever looked like an octogenarian is beyond me.
