That’s different than what my French friend brought over. Aren’t they usually quite bulkier? The ends on her chargers were large round bulky things, with the 3 narrow prongs sticking off. What she had also matched the European adapters I see sold at the electronics store here.
The majority of Europe uses two types of outlets and plugs. One bigger that’s usually grounded and bulkier and one smaller. The smaller one is always ungrounded and is compatible with either outlet.
The french bulkier outlets are also slightly different that what is common elsewhere. Their ground connection is a prong in the outlet while the rest of Europe has two clip things in the outlets. Most modern plugs accept both outlets though.
The bulkier European plugs and outlets are very safe. It’s impossible to short the pins during insertion and they never go out from the outlet without you intending for it to do so.
Ah yup! The French one is exactly what I was thinking of. I didn’t realize that there are different outlets in different EU countries. That’s gotta be annoying when traveling.
It’s impossible to short the US ones too. Plugs only go in one way if they’re polarized, or if they’re grounded. Some devices aren’t polarized and they can be plugged in right side up, or upside down.

I honestly don’t travel too much but I don’t imagine it would be a big deal.
Pretty much all phone chargers use the smaller version plug that fits in almost all outlets in Europe.
And the modern bulkier plugs usually have both a hole in the buttom to fit french outlets and the clip things to fit other European outlets.
Different materials used as basis for different battery techs will produce different voltages when the ions go to the anode (something to do with the energy that can gained when the ions combine with the material of the anode being only one of a fixed set of possibilities due to the available free bands in the atomic structure - please check Wikipedia for a proper and correct explanation rather than my vaguelly remembered one) which is why Lithium batteries are always around 4V without extra electronics to drop the voltage (which make them less efficient) and voltages above that require putting multiple cells in series to add their voltages.
As it so happens, the techs for the Carbon-based, Alkaline and Cadmium all have this voltage be around 1.5V (though you might have noticed that the Cadmium ones are a little lower than 1.5V and Alkaline a little higher) so you need 6x cells in series of batteries of that tech to get 9V.
That I know of, there is no consumer battery tech which has a single cell voltage of 9V and I don’t even know if there is any substance or combinations of substances that makes that possible at all.
Fantastic video, but it winds me up when they add padding to a phone video to make it landscape, as if no one in existence might possibly be viewing their phone-generated content on a phone.
Yeah adding padding is always harmful. If the aspect ratio doesn’t match it’s not like the video breaks so just let the player deal with it. Anyone who has a problem with vertical videos isn’t going to be any happier that you added bars to it. Who is this solution for?
It’s because the content was likely preprocessed for broadcast news. Which means normal 16:9 landscape format.
Vertical video has done nothing but introduce constant issues. I used to be a guide for Jeep runs, and I was also the video editor for the run videos (just clips from the run with music). And naturally you can’t be everywhere, so 95% of the clips have to be recorded by everyone else. Even though they were told “don’t record vertical video because we can’t use it” they did so anyways, and were upset when we couldn’t use their videos.
And to be clear, this isn’t just a random video. We’re talking about a large organized and legally registered club, so we kept everything to a certain standard of quality. Vertical videos are not suitable for anything except a phone.
Why can’t you use it? Because your web designer isn’t designing for the possibility that people use a phone to access the Web, but it’s not 2004 any more and they’re living in the past.
You showed your colours when you assumed that portrait video is of lower quality. It’s only of lower quality if you’ve padded it out and are watching it on a landscape screen!
Technology to detect whether your webpage is being viewed landscape has existed for a long time, and takes very simple calculations indeed or just a splash or two of css to maximise the video size for whatever screen it’s being viewed on. It’s design laziness and wasted bandwidth to put the silly blurry bars or even black bars down the side of the video. But don’t force landscape on everyone. Smart phones aren’t new and they aren’t going away.
I suspect that the majority of people who spend even a tiny bit more than half of their recreational screen time looking at a fixed landscape screen are well over thirty.
Because TVs are landscape. These videos are shown at club events.
You showed your colours when you assumed that portrait video is of lower quality.
I never said it’s lower quality. Not once.

Totally not lower quality. Definitely not. There’s a full stop and everything. No link whatsoever. My bad.
No one said anything about websites.
Well I think the rest of us are discussing a video on bbc.co.uk, which is a website, and we’re doing it on lemmy.world, which is also a website, and when I complained about people making portrait videos landscape, I suspect most people correctly figured out that I meant on websites, so I really think it’s just you that assumes we’re talking about jeep club.
Watching portrait footage that’s been padded out to landscape on a portrait device is even worse!
I’m proposing that the web designer writes a responsive webpage when they are sent a portrait video to include, so that if it’s viewed on a portrait device it fills the width, and when it’s viewed on a landscape device it fills the height. If it’s actually for telly, there’s usually no harm in cropping a bit at the top and bottom and at that point, feel free to put whatever you like down the sides, but there’s no need to throw away the portrait original for the portrait view of the website.
Like I already said, the technology for writing a webpage that looks different depending on the orientation of the device being used to view it is neither complicated nor new. There’s no need to treat every medium the same in 2023.
Yes, and that’s great, it really is, but when the footage you have is portrait, don’t pad it out to force landscape orientation on it irrespective of the orientation of the viewer’s screen, just let portrait content be full size portrait when viewed on a portrait screen. That is the beginning, the middle and the end of my point. It’s all I’m asking for.
And when anyone films in portrait, make sure to punish anyone trying to watch the footage with a similarly criminal portrait orientation, by putting borders round the side of the portrait content to force it to be landscape, thus shrinking the content to roughly a ninth of their screen, unless they switch to the blessed landscape orientation when it will fill a glorious third of the screen. Let no one watch it full size for the creator thereof has sinned against the gods of landscape.
This is the right and proper punishment for content creators who break the landscape law: let no one see this video fullscreen, for they have sinned against landscape. ibb.co/x2MQQG2 let the borders of landscape wrath descend and pad, and let fullscreen be disabled for all, for if landscape viewers are denied fullscreen EVERYONE MUST SUFFER.
Oh, or you could just skip the fuzzy bars in portrait mode if you’re feeling more accommodating to phone users.
Alright, you win, I’ll never use my phone in portrait ever again, especially not to film my dog in a storm. I’ll make sure I turn that baby right to your preferred orientation and I’ll stop complaining about pointless bars at the side of other people’s portrait content.
If you want, I can go back through my canara roll and delete everything that’s in portrait just in case I’m ever tempted to sell it to a news organisation. I’ll make sure to only ever post landscape content to whatsapp, signal and especially tiktok and instagram, because otherwise some relative, friend or random Internet user might share it in portrait.
You’re right. That’s definitely a better solution than not putting annoying fuzzy bars on portrait content.
Depends, looks like small planes, and even if 10 come and go everyday you would quickly stop hearing them at all (the brain is very good at ignoring useless stimuli)
I work at an airport. Cessnas and other small prop planes are perfectly fine and I think they are quieter than a harley for example. I bet those planes are the vast majority of planes flown in that pic of the neighborhood.
Once you put jets on things it can get annoying. Even small business jets are pretty loud for their size, not to mention commercial airliners coming and going.
Not sure if there is a misunderstanding but I’m agreeing with you
When I say the brain processes it, it means it does take some work and energy, although it might not bring it up to your conscious perception for you to react
Get some good speakers. Install an ad blocker (for now) and play “Air conditioner sound, 10 hours” on YouTube. It won’t annoy your neighbors, you can just say, “it’s muh humidifier” if anyone asks, but they probably won’t. Barking dog? Not in your bedroom. Vacuum cleaner? Nope, won’t hear it.
And you’ll get to where you can’t sleep without it.
There are also open source white noise generators that have no ads to begin with, don’t need internet, and are more energy efficient due to not having to process a video stream. They also let you customize the frequencies in the noise!
Have you seen the unbelievably entitled, self-centered assholes who play music on trails because they’re too cool for headphones and fuck what anyone else wants?
Eh, if you’re living in a air park like that one, chances are you’re a planespotter or an aircraft owner/pilot yourself, I’ll wager the sound is music to those guys ears. I certainly doubt anyone will complane, I mean they should know exactly what they signed up for.
See, there are some weird types like me who actually like the smell of 100LL, and don’t mind plane noise. I’d live there. But yeah, it’s definitely not for everyone.
Small airports like these really don’t smell like much. Sure: the fueling area, hangers, and maintenance shops have a smell, but it’s non existent as soon as you’re 50 feet away from them.
What is fucked up is how much leaded fuel gets dumped on the ground. Part of the pre-flight check for planes is taking a sample of gas from the lowest point in the tanks (the “sump”) to make sure there’s no water in it. It’s usually done with a tool like this one. A lot of pilots just toss the fuel sample on the ground rather than “dispose” of it properly.
Even with a washer, the head of a straight bolt won’t hold very well in concrete when you go trying to tighten it, it’ll most likely start spinning and possibly even damage the concrete.
J Bolts for concrete don’t have a head on them. The bent part is embedded into the concrete and would never be turned. Forming a hex head would be a wasted extra production cost.
I’m so tied of the bot spam in all these communities with 0 interactions showing up in the feed. For every one I block I swear 2 more show up. I don’t even get the point. Dead community maybe a few votes and just endless spam. Is there a block bots checkbox like there is a block nsfw
The problem isnt going to end with them. My right wing friends are completely indoctrinated by their boomer parents. And getting louder and louder about it.
Here’s to hoping. It’s exhausting. I can’t have a single conversation without them slyly trying to slip in some earworm or go off on a tirade unexpectedly because I inadvertently trigger them.

It’s worth the effort though. Thank you, citizen, for taking the time to do so.
If it’s for manufacturing why are some made without them?
Theres patents out there, I don’t know why technology connection did his own experiments on modern plugs instead of a modicum of research about receptacles.
Not exactly sure, I think it’s just one of those things were we “people” have gotten so used to the design and how it’s supposed to look, that even if it’s not needed we keep doing it.
Since multiple companies manufacturer plugs and connections, some manufacturers may not need the holes as a part of the assembly process. Other may opt not to add them as they do not have a purpose (other then how we perceive a north america plug is supposed to look like).
Funny story, almost all standard north america three prong plug are installed upside down. The third “center prong” or “ground” is actually on the top per the original design.
Most new builds and electricians are opting to install this way now. The orientation has no impact on performance.
the ground should absolutely be on the bottom because gravity.
Not necessarily. You typically want the ground longer so it’s the first in and last out. Type G has the ground on top. I vaguely remember hearing that’s because if it comes slightly out and something sharp or metal falls on the plug, you want it to hit the ground and not the live part…but I don’t know how reliable that story is.
This is the reason, yeah, at least according to what I’d read on Wikipedia (I’d just learned this “funny story” myself a few minutes before reading the comment above). I wanted to see if there was anything that could confirm it, but I’m not paying $70 to purchase the standard (NECA 130-2010) where it may be written.
Some electricians started doing it since it became a viral Internet trend to intentionally drop quarters onto the prongs of a slightly pulled out plug.
In history there’s only been a few cases of a fires being started because of an accidental thing falling on the plugs. The breaker trips before a fire would start in almost all cases. Provided the breaker isn’t faulty or something. Which you should be testing regularly as a home owner.
I’ve watched that video, what research and sources? He doesn’t talk about any specs or provide them, doesn’t talk about patents or provide them. Can you link to his sources if you know where they are?
It’s strange how he’s being treated as the end source, while not having any sources at all.
Look up NEMA specs and patents, it’s not my job to educate people who are taking someone’s word without sources or anything. His experiments are flawed his receptacles are all from the last 2 decades.
“Go try it yourself and you’ll see”… sure I’ll use a plug from the era that these are from, that’s who these are for, not for people with modern plugs who would be ones watching a video and trying this.
Here a plug that utilizes the holes to make a secure connection that can only be removed by pulling on the collar to remove the pins that go through the holes.
Yeah it’s a thing and if you have the holes in the plug, they must meet NEMA spec since it actually is used for locking in lots of cases. Despite technology connections missing the patent and specs from their videos.
What sources did tech connections have other than their wrong and biased experiment on modern receptacles that wouldn’t have this feature?
Older receptacles and even modern receptacles and cords do still make use of their holes.
It’s why if the holes are included there is specs they must follow.
This plug makes use of the holes for a solid mechanical connection that will only be removed when you pull on the collar to remove the pin that goes through the holes.
I hate the conflation of hours in a seat being a measure of productivity. How about actually measuring work product and quality versus amount of hours spent producing that work product. It’s just like when coders were judged based on lines of code versus whether the code is high quality.
I can’t find it, but a dozen plus years ago I was reading an interview with Phillip K Dick, who was married 5 times, and during the interview one of his- wives was packing things - and he commented to the interviewer to just let them take what they wanted as he has already experienced this multiple times.
Ticks are terrible; creepy just as little things that get on you, but then they also carry all sorts of diseases which really drives up the paranoia after every hike
I installed G-HUB the other week, and my only annoyance with it so far was the amount of times it informed me of the mouse DPI settings. Thankfully that was easy enough to turn off, but what other things about it are troublesome?
I don’t really care for profiles, or RGB settings… is it bad in other ways? (Genuinely curious, not meaning to sound snarky)
GHUB likes to wipe my keybinds and onboard settings every few weeks for no reason, and then sometimes it just completely refuses to open, so I have to reinstall the program just so I can reconfigure everything again.
Imagine having set up keybind for our mouse, ND then the game updates and creates a new executable or two somewhere else, and no matter what you do, it never recognizes the game ever again. So no more keybind, and the only way to fix would be to set up a profile and disabled the auto switch running all other games and profiles you have…
That’s my experience with ghub, otherwise apart from clunky unintuitive ui, it at least worked.
(the game is rainbow six siege by the way, haven’t been able to use a profile in that game all year. Part of the blame is naturally that siege does things very shitty when you can include like 5 different executables that are run)
I had trouble with my Logi G935 Headset. Whenever I muted myself by flipping the mic up, I couldn’t unmute ever again. Had to replug the receiver. Once I uninstalled G-Hub I noticed the mic immediately unmuting. Now it works without any problems.
I could even reactivate the Virtual Surround Sound by installing the respective audio software (DTS:X Headphones iirc).
Since then I have migrated to a dedicated Wired Headphone/Microphone Setup, which works flawlessly (and sounds way better).
