Is there any way I can make an old XMMS plugin work in any modern player?

Long story short, I learned there is an XMMS release of a plugin I use in Winamp for music playback (mp3PRO). Sadly, I recoded most of my music to mp3PRO back in the day, and now I’m stuck using Winamp, even on Linux. I like the player, wouldn’t change it, but I wanted to switch to something native, like Audacious or Qmms....

0x4E4F,

Maybe… I could try FLAC, that might be a more viable option.

0x4E4F,

I would rather tinker to be honest, I am that kind of a person, but currently, my family (kid) needs me. He’s young and needs guidance, playing, attention, etc. That is more important than tinkering with tech IMO.

Yeah, but the kid has to be older, 12 is too young for that IMO.

Still, a Linux install with a DE will do nicely. He wants to do this and this, but there is no GUI for it, tell him to open up the terminal and type in the following commands, see what happens after you hit Enter… it always brings a smile, even with adults ☺️, they feel like they’re hackers or something 😂.

Then they usually wanna know what each of the commands and options do, and this is where I know I have a great student ☺️.

0x4E4F,

I also think the main takeaway they should have out of it is that there’s many ways of doing the same thing and none is “the correct and only way”. They should learn to think critically, navigate unfamiliar user interfaces, learn some more general concepts and connect the dots on how things work, and that computers are logical machines, they don’t just do random things because they’re weird. Teach them the value of being able to dig into how it works even if it doesn’t necessarily benefit them immediately.

This will come gradually. First, show him one way of doing things, let it sink in, let him get comfortable with it, then say “you know, you could do that in another way as well 😉”. I bet he’ll start asking you if there are other ways as well in no time 😂.

0x4E4F,

Yes, he’ll just drop into Steam when something gets too hard to acomplish. I wouldn’t use the deck as a learning tool as well.

0x4E4F,

It was oiled up, so not much sound comming from there, except the occasional “shlup, shlup”… my mom was kinda weird though, she kept moaning our dog’s name for some reason 🤔.

I seriosly think that a psychologist or a therapist would be one of the few jobs that will never get replaced by AI… or at least not in the near future (10 years or so).

Though the question is valid, I would agree.

0x4E4F,

Yep, have done the same. Latest was the covid shot cert 😁. Couldn’t pass borders, but will get you into malls and shops 😁.

Help, boot doesn't work anymore

I have a laptop eith sata and a nvme drive. I installed a few operating systems and I decided on Mint for Sata. Installed it copied data from Nvme drive since I was using it as primary. I installed Nobara on nvme and it worked flawless until a few moments ago. Reboted and Mint is gone from boot options. Tried to add it but...

0x4E4F,

You’ve messed up partitioning and EFI partitions. There are leftovers from Debian and Windows. Wipe both drives, star fresh. Make one EFI partition on the NVME drive, 512MB, and use the rest for the main OS. Use the entire SATA drive for the other boot option (no need for EFI partition on that one). When installing the second OS, skip the bootloader install. Boot into the main OS, set grub to search for other OSes installed on the laptop and update grub afterwards. The second OS should appear in grub’s menu.

OK, then here’s what you do. Wipe the NVME, install your main OS on it. Boot to it, it should read the SATA drive. Mount it, copy whatever you need from it to the NVME drive. Then wipe the SATA drive (dd or any other program of your choice). Install your second OS on the SATA drive, but skip installing the bootloader. Reboot, boot to your man OS, set grub to search for other installed OSes on the laptop, update grub. The second OS should appear in grub’s menu.

If the data on the SATA drive is bigger than what the NVME can take, use BTRFS with compression (zstd=10 should do it, after the copy, you can drop the compression to 5 for better performance) on the main OS. It will compress binaries or plain text/document files quite nicely. Media, not so much, but it will cut down a few % off it.

Also, when you update the kernel on the second OS, grub won’t detect that. You have to manually switch to the new kernel, but from the main OS. Also, removing old kernels on the second OS will become more complicated, since there is no bootloader installed for it.

0x4E4F,

Influencers/charmers were always a thing, was it not?

Maybe, but not to the extent they are today.

0x4E4F,

Yeah, but that just makes me feel like I’ve thrown away my money for nothing, like the platform didn’t get any better, it got worse… one of the many reasons why I pirate as well.

0x4E4F,

That’s probably from ReVanced, it reads Premium by default.

Use Void as the basis. Most of the tools you’ll need are in the repo (add the non-free repo as well), the ones that aren’t, are in xbps-src and you compile from source (it’s only a few commands after you clone the repo).

Regarding samba, holler, I’ll share what I use. Also, don’t forget to install nss-mdns for discoverability. Also holler if you need help getting the services to autostart on boot up.

Air cooling has less points of failure.

One of the main reasons why brand name workstations and servers are still air cooled… and will probably be for a very long time.

What are your experiences with polyamory, first or second hand?

I personally am in a phenomenally stable polyamorous relationship. I’ve been married to my wife for 12 years, and she has had the same boyfriend for about half of that time. It’s a really fulfilling arrangement for all of us in various ways. We’re all genuinely happy and satisfied. I’m kind of casually looking for a...

Please keep it civil, no under the table touching.

    0x4E4F,

Maybe and updated turned it back on 🤷.

Look into this, I use it on all Windows installs.

Yes I can. One of the prime ministers we had was convicted but abolished by the president. He was in a left oriented party, the president was in the same one. He didn’t retire from politics, he went on to become our prime minister.

    0x4E4F,

    🤦
