A lot of things may have changed in ten years though. It’s good that nothing broke, but it’s not very reassuring.

Shouldn’t you also, I don’t know, go to school, graduate and become an accountant or something?

A herd of snipers does sound kind of worrying to be honest.

Actual Unix users care. Maybe people that just jumped ship from Microsoft don’t, but I think that’s just because they don’t know what’s possible and how convenient it is.

How to cope with existing right now?

It feels like no matter where I turn some septuagenarian, or older, is making life miserable for myself and others. Usually these are older white Christian conservatives, obsessed with a delusional sense of reality that no longer has a basis in fact, or perhaps never did....

One of the reasons that older people have money is because society was sane when they were young.

Also because they’ve had more time to make money.

As for the original question, “How to cope with existing right now?”, I find that apathy helps.

I read while brushing my teeth. It’s not like there’s something interesting to look at.

At least you don’t have to recalibrate it every time you want to use it.

That’s because we brought too many scientists to Egypt instead of soldiers like the Brits did.

I used to keep a windows drive to run steam. But it honestly sees very little use nowadays.

Mostly I boot it every few months to see what shenanigans Microsoft has pulled with windows. Other than that, it’s just sitting there. Everything I play runs in Linux.

I run Tumbleweed btw.

Back when the world was young, I had to produce a fairly large chunk of documentation which I started to write in MS Word 2.0 (which ran in Windows 3.11 or Windows for Workgroups).

However, at around 100 pages, I started to have trouble with file corruption. So since the company I worked with had contacts with Microsoft, I got in touch with them. “yes that’s a known bug, there’s a new version on this FTP site” (we were in the nascent ISP business).

So I got Word 2.0c. Which promptly crapped all over my document. “Oh, yeah, I guess the bug isn’t fixed then”.

Around the same time, a coworker had been telling me about those guys who were busy writing a Unix from scratch (hah, so silly) and who had, already gotten a usable and stable system (wait, really? cool!). So I grabbed a copy and tested that. It ran fine (it did help that I already knew a bit of Unix). And I did my document there, I don’t remember in what, if it was LaTeX or Applixware (maybe that came later).

Since then, Linux has always been on my desktop, with Windows coming and going on a secondary disk or partition, mostly relegated to the running of games.

But when you’ll be looking for XP compatibility in 2050, they’re going to be the only game in town.

Unix was meant to be much friendlier than the mainframe systems that wer prevalent at the time and which wer horrible to use without a lot of training (or even with it). By contrast, Unix commands were simple, self documenting. Anyone could use it.

I think that the point is to get a much bigger radiator by moving it to a less cramped location. The point is to make the process more efficient, not to change its nature.

How do y'all deal with programs not supported on Linux?

I’ve been seeing all these posts about Linux lately, and looking at them, I can honestly see the appeal. I’d love having so much autonomy over the OS I use, and customize it however I like, even having so many options to choose from when it comes to distros. The only thing holding me back, however, is incompatibility issues....

At the time, I installed slackware with a lot of floppies.

Now, after trying quite a few, I settled on OpenSuSE Tumbleweed. It has one of the best KDE desktops, and basically just works, whatever you do with it. It’s comfortable and boring which I see as great qualities.

Woah. That was a fine idea, but a free DLC? Management isn’t going to like that concept.
