Legal Eagle just released a video on exactly this topic.

Love his videos! I’ll be sure to check it out.

enslaved person being emancipated in 1942 Beeville, Texas

From the Wiki article…

In September 1942, Alfred Irving, who is believed to be one of the final chattel slaves in the United States, was freed at a farm near Beeville. Alex L. Skrobarcek and his daughter, Susie, were indicted by a federal grand jury in Laredo, Texas on November 9, 1942.[11][12][13][14] The pair were found guilty in Federal court in Corpus Christi, Texas on Thursday, March 18th, 1943. Alex L. Skrobarcek was sentenced to only four years in prison, while his daughter, Susie Skrobarcek, received two years. [15]

We need to put some strong protections against the propaganda and opinion pieces flowing out of all the news outlets.

Something tells me this one is a non-starter, as any new laws will slam up against the Constitution, over and over again.

Having said that, I would love to at least seen a real-time label, in a large font size, on any monitor/tv that specifies that what’s being shown is an opinion piece, and not a factual article/show.

So it takes 20 years for a sexed up WW2 vet to hop in the sack after returning from the war?

Fuck if I know, that’s not what I’m speaking about.

You don’t pop out of your mother’s womb already programmed to have an understanding of the socieity that you live in. You learn as you go from external sources (parents, family, society) and you act a certain way at each milestone of your life (child, young teenager, older teenager, young adult, adult, middle aged, senior).

When we all judge someone by applying a generation label its done based on how they act/opine, and not the chronological date that they entered the World. There’s a lag/delay from when a person starts to exist on this Earth to the time they form a personality and express said personality.

No other arbitrary age cohort has been so unjustly hated in American history

You talking about Boomers, or Gen-Xers?

A hell of a lot more than 300,000 people experimented with drugs and protested Vietnam.

True, but not all of them were hippies.

A lot of regular people, especially the younger generation, were doing drugs and protesting Vietnam.

Those two things are not what makes a hippie a hippie. It’s their life view that does.

I am really proud of my parents for always being progressive.

I hate the burst your bubble, but they weren’t being progressive, they were being 80’s liberals. Today’s progressives are a different thing.

(BTW, your comment was a good read.)

Here’s to hoping. It’s exhausting. I can’t have a single conversation without them slyly trying to slip in some earworm or go off on a tirade unexpectedly because I inadvertently trigger them.

It’s worth the effort though. Thank you, citizen, for taking the time to do so.

Honestly why your comment is so highly upvoted is blowing my mind, although I mean you no ill-will by that.

Ironically, both can be right, upvote wise.

As someone from the west coast of The States, I can’t say I’ve ever seen a hot drink vending machine in real life. At least not here where I live.

We used to have them, but I haven’t seen them for over a decade now.

If you remember the Terminator 2 movie, the scene where a security guard gets a cup of coffee, those are the kind of dispensers that used to exist.

(The link above shows the scene I’m speaking of. I tried to embed the URL into this comment so the picture itself would display, but I couldn’t figure it out.)

If you were playing Choplifter in elementary school, you’re really not THAT old.

If you had to load Choplifter into your Apple II to play it with a cassette tape recorder, then yes, you are old, you are a first gen computer game player.

It will definitely be interesting to see how all of the shakes out, legally wise.

Wouldn’t be surprised if they’re over here already.

There’s definitely bots here already.

Didn’t work for me when I tried the same. Using the Lemmy.World web site, not an app.

Edit: Just tried in a desktop browser, didn’t work either.

What do you bet, every comment on Lemmy is just a fucking bot which has cloned the comment section from Reddit?

Even if you’re right, the knowledge is still the same, and it moves people away from Reddit and to Lemmy, so it’s a win-win.

if rent prices are out of control why is it still reasonable for a landlord to verify affordability?

Because you have to verify that someone is not overextending themselves, to try to land in your place, and then being unable to pay the rent because they did overextend.
