How to get a private car

Hello internet users. Someone in my family is looking to buy a car and wanted some recommendations for a private one. They are looking to buy new, and need Android Auto and CarPlay. I know all new cars suck for privacy by default, but I was hoping someone here could offer some insight as to which cars can be made better and what...

ExLisper,

There are degrees of privacy.

And what did I say? “Just get extra phone and use some fake google account for android auto and you should be fine”. Kind of like I’m saying that while total privacy is not possible you can find a good compromise, wouldn’t you say?

ExLisper, (edited )

Privacy and cars are mutually exclusive. If you want privacy use public transport and pay in cash. With cars you have licence plate scanner, cameras and tollbooths everywhere (no to mention that most people drive with their phones on them). “They” will know where were you driving no matter what car you use. The question really is what data are you trying to hide and from who? The obvious thing to do is not to give your data to advertisers. Selling you shit is the whole point of most of the data collection. Just get extra phone and use some fake google account for android auto and you should be fine here. As for car companies all they will gather is some generic data about your driving habits but guess what? Everyone knows this already because driving is not private (again, if you want to hide this use public transport). So yeah, it would be nice for car companies to be more transparent about the data they gather and how they use it but it’s really not a big issue. If you’re paranoid about it then don’t drive. If you’re driving the data your car is leaking though analytics is not your biggest problem.

ExLisper,

I’m pretty sure what he sold was not the code but access to this play store account so that the new owner can push updated version to his current users.

ExLisper,

I remember when I used to keep my fully configured distros below 700MB so I could just dump it all to a CD as a backup. Good days.

ExLisper,

What are you going to do about it, asshole?

ExLisper,

Such a tragic story made beautiful by good writing and a bit of compassion. 10/10

ExLisper,

OMG! Same. Well, almost. I’m running AwesomeWM, my gf has t480 and I have heard of Arch.

ExLisper,

Oh my, yes. The benefit is that one you figure it out it’s super easy to create widgets. I wrote from 0 or adapted my own widgets for apt, Spotify, notes, timer, weather alerts… Basic plugins (like system monitor, battery, volume) you can just find online but when you need something custom is real easy. For example I wanted something to alert me when my pihole is down. 30 minutes of scripting and it’s in my tray.

ExLisper,

Debian with awesome at home. Fedora with cinnamon at work.

ExLisper,

If you need a truck sometimes just get a MPV. Citroen Berlingo in XL version has 850 liters of cargos pace. The biggest Ford Raner has 1050 liters. If someone thinks they will actually carry things in their pick up I can’t fit in my Berlingo they live in a fantasy land.

The dumbest thing I see is people using SUVs as family cars. MPV will be cheaper and 100x more practical for this. But people don’t buy tracks and SUVs for practicality. They buy them for looks and to brag.

ExLisper,

I’ve been using Debian sid for over 40 years now and never had an issue with a broken package. What is this about?

ExLisper,

No one stops you from moving to Wayland. It has it’s uses. But the FUD you’re spreading is stupid and boring. X is fine, it’s exactly what a lot of people need and it doesn’t make sense to move their DEs to Wayland only because it’s ‘new’. The fact that it took Wayland 10 years to reach any sort of usability shows just how little does it offer to an average user.

ExLisper,

This is FUD. Here’s a security fix from a month ago: …freedesktop.org/…/541ab2ecd41d4d8689e71855d93e49…

Abandonware my ass…

ExLisper,

Yes, I mentioned it in my post. The idea that you can only travel back in time to the moment the machine was turned on is great and helps you avoid many paradoxes. It’s a very close second to Timecrimes but the ending was very confusing with too many timelines created at the same time.

ExLisper,

Wasn’t that the one with one guy sitting in the bar telling a story?

ExLisper,

So what’s the actual problem is? It’s just a front end to other platforms, they will not lock you in and than break the app. You can use it and if it goes bad you switch to other front end. I would understand the ‘not free’ objections if it was a tool you introduce into our workflow that would later be hard to replace. Here there’s no lock in. What do you care if it can be forked?

Disney is gouging customers with a near doubling of subscription costs. (sh.itjust.works)

Disney is raking its customers over the coals with a 75% price hike for their annual subscription (originally $80.) People wonder why piracy is on the rise.Multiple commenters are saying I’m off base about the 75% price increase. My payment less than a year ago was $79.99. Here’s the proof.

ExLisper,

Of course I am. I’m arrogant, not ignorant.

ExLisper,

First couple seasons were great. The movies were shit. Later seasons were shit.

ExLisper,

I guess you’re right. Not all content on the platform is shit, only all content made by Disney is. But I highly doubt a lot of people pay for Disney+ to watch non-Disney content.

Beans Are a Vegetable: an Overanalysis (lemmy.ca)

“Of course beans count as a vegetable!” I said to my wife. We have this house rule that it’s okay to eat mac and cheese for dinner so long as you add a vegetable. If I may ‘spill the beans’, I’m obsessed with them. Each one is tastier than the last: garbanzo bean, black bean, kidney. The butter bean, which is just...

ExLisper,

I looks like when people hear that legumes are not vegetables they assume they are somehow worse. The truth is, legumes are not vegetables, they are better. Legumes are important part of Mediterranean diet which “includes proportionally high consumption of unprocessed cereals, legumes, olive oil, fruits, and vegetables”. Vegetables are good for you but without legumes there’s no Mediterranean diet and it’s proven that this diet has many health benefits. So eat your vegetables but even more importantly, eat your legumes.

Linux clipboard app which has functionality to paste multiple things after copying them in one go.

Edit: Everything seems too complicated, so I just went with this odysee.com/simplescreenrecorder-2023-09-03_11.02.…When you try to copy something, you copy something and then you paste it. This is fine, but I wish there was an app which would help me copy multiple items at different times and seamlessly help me paste it....

ExLisper,

There are tons of clipboard managers for Linux. I used clipit and copyq but there are more.

Funny story: some desktop support guy came to do something on my laptop. He opened some remote file, copied admins password, pasted it into login prompt, did his things, selected some random texts and pressed ctrl+c couple of times. I asked him if that was to clear the password and he says that yes. I’m like… look here, and I clicked in my clipboard manager icon and the password is there in the history. LoL.
