LesserAbe,

Does anyone know someone with a pen pal? It’s a nice idea and I remember doing it in elementary school, but who has the time?

LesserAbe,

I know very little about contributing to open source but appreciated reading this. Seems like often the interpersonal element is the biggest challenge and the author handled it well.

LesserAbe,

I haven’t followed mods of c/politics at all, but I’m skeptical that it’s a right wing echo chamber because we’re talking about Lemmy

What do you guys do when you want to run unmaintained programs? (lemmy.world)

I recently wanted to run tegaki, and my experience is pretty much summed up by the meme. I consider myself fairly tech-savvy, but I just couldn’t figure out how to compile it. So I just gave up, downloaded the .exe and put it into a fresh wine prefix. After installing CJK fonts, everything ran fine. Now I’m trying to get...

LesserAbe,

Also guess I should say my solution is to run a virtual Windows machine on my Ubuntu laptop

LesserAbe,

Maybe I’m missing something or don’t know how to use wine, but more than 50% of the time if I try to run an old windows program it doesn’t work.

LesserAbe,

I like the sentiment. The challenge is that those who violate privacy benefit financially, while those who defend against it are just trying to protect themselves. To go on the offensive requires effort and know-how without any corresponding financial or personal benefit. A spite based effort sounds appealing but wouldn’t be sustainable.

LesserAbe,

That’s why all the funny movies are no more than five minutes long

LesserAbe,

Thanks for sharing! Besides thematic similarity also visually pleasing.

LesserAbe,

Would probably be more impactful if I had seen that show

LesserAbe,

As OP I can share that’s just the color of the tiles

LesserAbe,

I skimmed that website but my mind refuses to engage with the text.

LesserAbe,

Pardon what might be an obvious question, but can you watch paid services using this set up? (Netflix/HBO/prime etc)

LesserAbe,

You’re right. Also from what little I understand about radiation seems like you might want to take some more definitive action too rather than give the polonium time to finish the job. It would probably be more unpleasant than however else you were going to die

LesserAbe,

Yeah I’m ban shy but just now was asking myself if this is the same person again

LesserAbe,

This one could baffle future generations. Phone booths were mostly done when I was growing up, but I think kids would play a game where they would see how many people could fit in a booth, right?

LesserAbe,

Why are we seeing this image when clearly it should be on a novelty t-shirt sold only to sassy snow plow drivers

LesserAbe,

You’re right and I think it helps to remember certain traits which make religion “fit” from an evolutionary perspective can be beneficial to its followers: believing that the most powerful being in the universe is on your side instills confidence and a sense of well-being. Having community members who believe that God has mandated they should help each other means people may receive assistance when they experience difficulty.

I would argue in the long term having beliefs which are more and more consistent with observed reality is more sustainable. The further your beliefs are from reality and the longer they’re held the more likely something will go wrong. Still, if we (whoever that is) want to encourage people to move away from religion we should think about how we can replace the positive aspects of the religious experience.

LesserAbe,

Reminds me of this tweet from Merman_Melville: “Being a billionaire must be insane. You can buy new teeth, new skin. All your chairs cost 20,000 dollars and weigh 2,000 pounds. Your life is just a series of your own preferences. In terms of cognitive impairment it’s probably like being kicked in the head by a horse every day” The experience itself is probably harmful and changes the person. https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/18e0c77d-e341-4343-bbeb-80a0c47c8be9.png
