I believe PostmarketOS with the PinePhone Pro is a decent experience. Nope, it’s not. Don’t get it if you don’t want to contributr your time to the project. With that said, I’m not too confident on its usability, 2 years after its release. What do you run and what has your experience been like?

MigratingtoLemmy,

I hate that Framework doesn’t support Coreboot yet. That’s perhaps the only laptop brand I’d be willing to spend $1000 on to purchase a laptop from, but unless they act on it I’m not buying anything from them. Unfortunately, System76 isn’t really present outside the US, which makes it a real pickle I’m in

MigratingtoLemmy,

Lol, that’s a laptop that looks like a thinkpad but with ARM instead. No thanks, even Purism laptops is better than that (except shipping to outside the US)

MigratingtoLemmy,

Thank you, I’ll take a look! That’s a great idea!

What hobbies help you minimize or avoid navigating commercialism?

By commercialism, I’m aiming at a mix of spending a lot and sifting through bloated business models (e.g. this or that accessory/equipment, microtransactions, etc.). Feel like many can relate to this sort of commercial fatigue, and yet it creeps even into hobbies where one tries to unwind....

MigratingtoLemmy,

Some of them in the US do. Or you could send the blueprints to China and they can ship it to you

MigratingtoLemmy,

Public library

MigratingtoLemmy,

That’s a NAT issue. Are you able to reach anything else besides Jellyfin behind the router?

MigratingtoLemmy,

Define “bizzare”. You don’t need to understand too much of federation to be able to use Lemmy.

Depending on what works and what doesn’t, that mindset may or may not be required to use Lemmy.

I like Lemmy enough that I will likely spin up my own instance at some point

MigratingtoLemmy,

We need to use some tool. If the government doesn’t have your private key, they can’t decrypt your messages. I don’t care how that is implemented, but companies like Signal will either fight to the death or bow out

MigratingtoLemmy,

Thanks for the list. I live in the US but I’ll keep this in mind

MigratingtoLemmy,

From what I understand of PKI and the way the Internet is right now, trust in identity would be very hard to build if clients engage in PKI.

But taking encryption into one’s hands basically brings back control into one’s hands. You do not specifically need an encrypted connection in such a case, just a tamper-proof connection.

MigratingtoLemmy,

Could you link to this? I didn’t know such a patch-set existed

MigratingtoLemmy,

I block all 3rd scripts and some first party scripts along with restricting capabilities of the domains I do allow with a combination of uBlock Origin and NoScript. I’m definitely not paying for a subpar experience compared to this

Is it better to use a non-FOSS email and phone number forwarder or to use one of each for everything? (www.cloaked.app)

I like to try websites out before tying my identity to them. How do you do it? Simplelogin? I honestly won’t manually make a new gmail for every new website I try and I to want the option to see what emails I get.

MigratingtoLemmy,

My apologies, I thought privacy.com supported credit cards, but apparently they don’t, even in the premium tier. Indeed, I would like virtual cards for my credit card, since I’m never going to buy anything with my debit card anyway. I wish the other banks had something like Capital One

MigratingtoLemmy,

They link to one’s credit card in the premium plan. That’s what I would have wanted to see becoming universal in their services, but unfortunately that’s behind a paywall

MigratingtoLemmy,

I would be OK doing that if they didn’t link to my debit card in the free plan (last time I checked)

MigratingtoLemmy, (edited )

Do you pay for the premium tier? I would like a decent credit score, and using my card for normal, everyday purchases doesn’t bother me as much.

Edit: Well, technically, they have your data anyway. It’s like using Paypal for everything. TBH I’m OK with the system as it is right now, but I’d like greater adoption for Monero so I can make purchases directly using that instead of converting it to fiat once again.

MigratingtoLemmy,

If they are going to push the transaction to my bank anyway, I’m definitely not trying it. As I said, even PayPal will obscure the buyer’s details from the seller. What’s the point?

MigratingtoLemmy,

Ah, you’d use Privacy.com? Decent idea I suppose.

MigratingtoLemmy,

TBH I don’t really care that much as long as the source is available. Some talented dev can fork it if the project goes sideways. I’d like a webapp/desktop app too
