Wife has been canning for a few years now and we have a pantry of fruits, veggies, and dehydrated food. She goes to the farmers markets during harvest time and goes to town on entire cases of tomatoes, corn, beans, etc. That will last all year for our family of 5. We also pay a friend to raise a pig on her ranch and butcher that once a year. Just got ours (over 400 lbs!). Pork is A LOT cheaper that way. Haven’t found anyone to go half or a quarter in on a cow. We also would need another deep freezer and don’t really have room for it.
We also meal plan weekly so we only buy groceries for what we need to make meals. That saves a ton of money as you aren’t wasteful as much. Oh and we either do pick up or delivery as you spend more when you’re in the store and see things you want but don’t need.
We make almost everything we can from scratch. Wife recently found a recipe for baked oyster crackers with butter and seasoning on them that make dirt cheap snacks and they’re fantastic. The store brand oyster crackers are $1 for 16oz. That’s almost cheap enough to not make those from scratch too. We haven’t bothered yet.
We probably aren’t saving much on the veggies overall for sure. Some are cheaper than canned but others aren’t. However, we know exactly what’s in it and we buy it once a year so we’ve budgeted for it.
Definitely not about cost on the veggies. At best it’s break even compared to the store. It’s more about knowing it’s the veggie and water only. Or seasoning too if you like them a certain way. We’ve found corn to be higher quality too. Plus, where we live peaches are fabulous and better than anywhere else in the country so we get to can the best and control the amount of syrup used so they’re healthier. Sorry Georgia, you don’t actually have the best peaches.
China invades Taiwan and the US helps defend them.
China’s president Xi Jingping’s remarks about taking Taiwan back over during his address to the nation this year.
I work with someone who is currently high ranking in a corporation and is a retired submariner who was also in intelligence and is currently in the reserves. He has mandatory federally protected training upcoming this year over this exact scenario (basically, not all of their training is federally protected, meaning an employer can’t retaliate over taking time off to do mandatory training). The military is obviously convinced it’s a real possibility.
If you figure it out let me know. It’s been 2 years for me.
I have heard of Stellate Ganglion Block which blocks the nerve and kind of reboots it. People talk about it literally working instantly. About $500/side (they can do one or both) and you have to find someone that can do it near you.
My kiddo and I are having a fruit and vegetable challenge. Each month we’ll seek out a fruit or vegetable we’ve never tried and taste it. My BFF is trying to walk all the greenways in our county (that is county not country, low stakes! Attainabl!). How about you?
I recommend finding a movie you love that was a book first and reading it. I’m an extremely picky reader and I did this with Dune and LOVED it. Hasn’t gotten me much further but this may help kickstart your love of reading again.
My son and I got an Ender 3 Pro 3D printer for Christmas from a family friend who scored one from a print farm for cheap. She also gave us upgrades and we’ve been learning how to print. Already successfully printed a calibration cube and master sword. We have a bunch of functional prints we want to tackle so it’s been a fun learning experience for both of us.
Pumpkin pie filling. The real stuff takes forever and it’s stringy. It also doesn’t taste quite the same. Libby does it so well it’s not worth making your own.
My wife says pie dough. Pillsbury’s is almost as good and a lot less effort. I prefer pie dough with a ton more butter but she doesn’t.
Why are apps like Fairemail, Voyager, etc. updated so often? Why don’t they collect the changes and release them once a month or something like that?...
That’s a really good example. Also makes me think of apps that have stable and beta/nightly builds available. Stable gets updated at a much slower pace than beta/nightly.
Would love to know what you guys think and your reasoning for it. I’m starting to see a lot of Apple Watches/Fitbits/Galaxy Watches in my area compared to more traditional timepieces.
Smartwatch. It’s very useful for triaging notifications (messages, email, phone calls, etc) and turning HomeKit devices on/off quickly or when my hands are full (Siri, open the garage door). Also extremely useful for fitness.
Thank you for being transparent. This helps those of us who don’t know how to spool up our own instance figure out how much to donate. Much appreciated.
There are a few sites that do the same thing but I find All Sides to be a very quick way to know how biased a news topic is and what neutral really is.
I never bought that argument. They squeeze their bodies through holes that only their face just fits into regularly. That would also hurt but they do it.
Last time, I used: “Anybody need anything while I’m out?” and that went over well. May not make it through this surgery on Friday, so I turn to Lemmy for top-notch suggestions for my potential last words!
Propofol is a hell of a drug. It’s impossible to not say something since your prefrontal cortex is basically still off.
My wife is an RN for the place I had a procedure done and I came out of it asking the anesthesiologist how much she made and telling her my wife was thinking of becoming a nurse anesthetist. The staff thought it was hilarious of course.
Indeed, one of our regional airports has housing with taxi ways to the runway as well. Instead of garages for cars they have hangers for the planes and cars.
How are you all making it right now with grocery store prices?
I don’t know how they think we’re all going to survive with these prices.

Lemmings without bidet: how do you deal with your period?
Do you regularly take half showers between tampons or you’re fine with just drying for the most intense days?
What's a food you love, that isn't worth making from scratch?
For me, crepes ain’t worth the stress to make fresh. Just buy a little pack from store and focus on filling is my go to.

Is Lemmy as a platform sustainable?
I’m wondering how are all those different Lemmy instances financed? I know some rely on donations, but is that all and is that sustainable?
