Holy shit. I had no idea that existed. I also kinda forgot Herman Cain died.

The fucking what subreddit?

In your opinion.

You are not the arbiter of all that is funny.

Depends on which part of Canada you’re in but where I am? It’s been above freezing for the past couple days and will likely stay that way. In Summer it’ll get 33c or higher (91.4f for the Americans). Where I’m from originally it would work even better because the summers get that hot but also absurdly humid. Like 95% humidity.

I have a box of a few hundred disposable glasses cleaning wipes I just stuff everywhere. Was like $20 on Amazon and my best purchase ever. Been using it for months. Life changing.

I mean sure if you’re covered in mud or something. For general wear and use? Most people aren’t getting grit or sand or heavy dirt particles on their glasses. They’re just getting smudges and water spots and tiny hairs or eye dust.

I keep seeing comments littered across lemmy but do you know what I don’t see? Reports. So many people complaining about lack of moderation and absolutely no one is helping with that. You are included in that. How do I know that? Because Lemmy mods are able to see who makes the reports. There are none from this thread in general (outside of a couple of people using the report as a complaint button) but also zero reports from you specifically.

If you want active moderation then I might suggest actually bothering to call us. We’re not omniscient and omnipresent. We need to be notified. Stop trying to blame moderators here when you are just as fault. We have other shit to do. If you see something, say something. You don’t get to complain about mods not removing the comments when you’ve been supposedly seeing them and not lifting a single finger to point it out.

Edit: This is priceless. I’m looking through the comments and yeah, there are a couple to be removed for sure. But the funny thing is that most of the comments I’m seeing that need to be removed are yours. You have been acting wildly uncivil throughout this thread. There are a couple other comments that need to be removed but no single user in this thread has more problematic comments than you. Now I see why you didn’t report anything.

I am not the person who made the comment. If you have an issue with wording of it, take it up with the commenter. As it stands, it does not violate any community rules.

He actually lives in Canada. Your comment still applies overall as it is not feasible to live adequately on disability here but he’s not in the US.

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

Why do you think that? What part of what I said made you come to that conclusion?

I worded that badly. It should more accurately say “it’s heavily predicated on the assumption that AI will act in a very particular way thanks to the narrow scope of human logic and comprehension.” It still does sort of apply though due to the below quote:

we can conclude that a mind capable of logic, possessing preferences over worldstates, and capable of thinking on superhuman timescales will pursue its goals without concern for things it does not find valuable, such as human life.

Oh, I see. You just want to be mean to me for having an opinion.

I disagree heavily with your opinion but no, I’m not looking to be mean for you having one. I am, however, genuinely sorry that it came off that way. I was dealing with something else at the time that was causing me some frustration and I can see how that clearly influenced the way I worded things and behaved. Truly I am sorry. I edited the comment to be far less hostile and to be more forgiving and fair.

Again, I apologize.

What is your unpopular flim opinion

I’ll go first. Mine is that I can’t stand the Deadpool movies. They are self aware and self referential to an obnoxious degree. It’s like being continually reminded that I am in a movie. I swear the success of that movie has directly lead to every blockbuster having to have a joke every 30 seconds

Stamets, (edited )
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

No, I stand by the fact that it is a good movie. Just because it has some flaws doesn’t make it universally bad. It’s not even close to the worst movie in the franchise either. Rise of the Skywalker grabs that without hesitation (That outright is a TERRIBLE movie) but the Prequels are all significantly worse in both writing and direction than The Last Jedi. Revenge comes a lot closer and I’d say personally is tied with TLJ on coherence. George Lucas was a moron. He never had a plan but people constantly think he did. Within all three of the OT movies alone he keeps changing everything from characters to lore. The Prequels got worse because he had no one to temper him. That being said, this is about TLJ.

That being said, there’s no issue with the writing there in my opinion. Leia and Rey do have a touching moment, sure, but that was in the Force Awakens not The Last Jedi. Leia also straight up never gives her that bracelet on screen because JJ Abraams is a complete and utter fuckwit. The scene in TLJ is between Finn and Leia where Leia reveals the beacon to Finn. He asks how Rey would find us and Leia and shows him. He says “A cloaked binary beacon.” She says “To light her way home.” You are right in that the scene does continue immediately into the First Order tracking them but how they tracked them was completely different. The beacon tells Rey (and only Rey) where Leia is when tracked. But Snokes vessel outright tracked them through lightspeed itself. They didn’t check the location of her and then jump to her. They actively followed the fleet through hyperspace itself without needing end coordinates. This was shown later in the movie and Leia directly says it by saying "They tracked us through lightspeed.* Something that hasn’t been shown to be possible on screen.

Yeah. They’re in the same scene but that wasn’t an accident. There wasn’t people behind the scenes who were that monumentally braindead. That scene was written that way with the purpose of making people think that the two would be related. Now I will give you that it’s not well written how they use that throughout the rest of the movie but it was put there on purpose. It was to make people doubt Leia (supporting him through the Poe arc, which worked way too well despite the fact that he did not have a singular leg to stand on with his entire argument despite everyone and their mother thinking he was right) and seem like the clear and obvious fix. They completely dropped the ball there, I admit. But overall I didn’t have a problem with that scene specifically. Just how they used that scene. Especially considering that tracking device was never actually used. Seriously. They added in and then never really used it. I don’t know if it ended up on the cutting room floor or what. The intention was clearly to fuck with the audience because Rey doesn’t ever find the Resistance using that bracelet. She meets up with Kylo on Snokes ship and Kylo is the one who gives her the coordinates.

The logical writing progress would have been to have Finn doing his thing (that arc, I grant you, is fundamentally worthless. The whole casino segment is a waste of screentime and only manages to produce a couple of light gags which all focus on BB-8) and Poe advancing on Leias position during his mutiny. He gets to Leia and gets the bracelet, destroys it and they jump to lightspeed. Everyone breathes a sigh of relief and then the First Order shows back up anyway, having tracked them. Holdo has a scene of “I told you so”, probably just by staring at him without saying anything, and then everyone freaks out on what to do. Leia is still out and Holdo is in command so she decides to try and ram them with the last lightspeed jump of the cruiser that they somehow manage to movie magic in the last second from all the X-wings, life support, yadda yadda. Forcing the rest to evacuate to Crait. Movie continues on as normal.

The issue to me isn’t that the writing didn’t make sense. It did. My issue was that they expected the audience to connect too many dots on their own. Ended up with people making different connections than were intended. Too many things were left on the cutting room floor while stuff like that Casino segment was allowed to go on for way too long. Or the kiss between Finn and Rose which was just fucking bizarre. So much so that even Finn in that scene has a look on his face like “What the fuck are you doing?” But with all the issues that TLJ has? I still find it to be a way more coherent story and more interesting one than either of the first two Prequels. And Rise of Skywalker because that movie is idiotic. Like a good script doctor could have fixed it and made it a decent movie but they made so many weird fucking decisions and bizarre writing choices that literally nothing about it makes sense. What pisses me off is people then blame Rian Johnson for the problems of Rise too when half of that was on the studio for not being able to make up their mind on directors/writers (that movie has way too many writers) and the other half falls squarely on the fanbase for reacting as strongly and negatively as they did to the first two sequels.

I did laundry last night. Put two Gain pod things in the bag. Only ended up needing one so I’m heading back up with the bag and this thing and I keep smelling it and it smells so good. It’s some summer berry thing and it not only smells good but edible. Then the big squishiness and the fact that it can pop open and spill goodness? Thing feels like a big berry or a small fruit or something. I had to fight the urge to bite

I still want bite

I get it now

This is… troublesome and really demonstrates a massive lack of understanding of what happened behind the scenes. I think you need to watch this. It’ll lay out a lot of things that you don’t seem to be aware of. You’re giving Rick Berman a lot of credit for things he just simply never did.

He had some interesting ideas, a somewhat positive outlook on the future,

This outright false. Rick Berman said on numerous occasions that he didn’t believe that the future could be a utopia or anything like it but that when you’re making Star Trek you have to believe it. He did not have a positive outlook on the future.

I don’t think Berman had quite the “this backstory sounds absurd even for fiction” life before Trek that Roddenberry had, but they both sucked in similar ways when it came to Trek.

Berman had literally no life before Trek. The only thing he had done in TV was a childrens show. Also gonna need you to elaborate on how you think Gene sucked here because I see no similarities between that abhorrent pile of filth and Gene.

I find it somewhat interesting that many women in Trek have terrible stories about him, but Kate Mulgrew doesn’t seem to dislike him all that much.

Well, she did, but not as publicly. Why? That’s because Kate Mulgrew and Rick Berman are cut from the same cloth. Kate Mulgrew was bossing people around on the set of Voyager like she was the Queen of it. She was actively referred to as “The Queen of Voyager”. She tried to prevent Jeri Ryan from being able to use the bathroom while on set because “it takes too much time to get in and out of that catsuit.” Jeri Ryan herself commented numerous times on the active torture that she recieved on set from Mulgrew. That whole “Mulgrew liked him!” isn’t the strong take that you think it is when that woman was a fucking nightmare to her co-stars and just a fucking nightmare to people in general. Both Jeri Ryan and Garrett Wang have talked about how toxic she was to work with. Moreover, Kate Mulgrew had difficult times during negotiations herself. Rick Berman would also call to randomly say “You should eat something” because Kate was stressed on set and losing weight. So, once again, negotiations with a woman were an utter nightmare and Rick would call before scenes to taunt the actress.

Who knows what would’ve happened if someone else had taken over the show?

And that matters how? Why should we be happy with the mysognistic homophobic piece of human garbage that we got just because things might have been different?

Berman did manage to turn a heavily criticised sequel (remember, everyone hated TNG when it first came out) into what I consider to be the golden age for Trek.

No he didn’t and to say that is to absolutely ignore the work of everyone else on set and give far too much credit to a misogynistic piece of human filth.

Writers and actors have said on numerous occasions that the success of Star Trek had nothing to do with Rick Berman and was in spite of him. This was demonstrated in Enterprise as he proceeded to have way more of control over it. He was the reason for the decontamination gel, for instance, as well as outright ignoring characters of color and highly sexualizing female stars.

I have to question if any nice, likeable person would’ve been able to please the networks and their execs to make all of that possible.

You wondering about what could potentially be is not a valid reason to accept all the abhorrent things that Rick Berman did while in control of Star Trek.

Discovery and Picard were free to develop independent of him, and they felt so very different.

Yeah. That’s the point. They’re not supposed to feel the same because Star Trek is not a homogenized set of shows like everyone wants to keep pretending they are. You wanna talk about dark? Then we’re going to need to go back to Deep Space 9. A show that was notorious in having to hide stuff like the Dominion war from Rick Berman so it could be shown on screen. That’s right. One of the most beloved arcs, and critically acclaimed arcs, was actively hidden from Rick Berman so he had no involvement. Why? Because the show runner of DS9 knew that Rick Berman would meddle far too much.

They’re so depressing and dark, down to the ship designs.

That is your opinion and I really do not appreciate you trying to inject that in like it’s fact. Discovery and Picard are both dark, sure, but calling the ship design depressing is just flagrant bias which is extremely repugnant when you’re trying to use your own personal opinion to, once again, justify the actions and behavior of an aggressive homophobe and sexist.

but I would’ve taken more Berman-like work over either.

And I prefer the ideals that Gene himself instilled which were darker tones that focused on more harrowing examples of humanity. Rick Berman sanitized the show and turned it into an episodic piece of television that had to struggle behind the scenes and find its own voice despite the immense pressure from an executive who not only hated the concept of Star Trek but also had zero experience in working in this form of television and did not understand what he was doing.

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

Oh no I get what you mean, it’s clarification. I wasn’t super clear there. I didn’t mean the actor was gay but that the actor had definitely played the character as gay.

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

Depends on the mood i’m in or the type of person they are. If they’re trolls, then yes. Ignore and carry on. But if they’re just a Karen type who is genuinely full of themselves? Fuck it. You wanna call me a dick? I shall fulfill the criteria.
