My most recent job wants me to buy a new laptop “so my Webcam will work”

It works fine. I taped over it when I got it because I never had planned need of it. Anything requiring video can be handled on my phone.

Why do they NEED me to get a new laptop?

So the managers who don’t use their cameras can see my face during their boring ass bullshit “I’m so important look at me and crave my input” team meetings every week.

No. If you want to see me, you can come talk face to face, or stare at a picture you would have had to cyberstalk to find.

Funny thing is, in my training I’ve had to do other team meetings with other people in the company, and nobody mentioned my lack of camera.

If it’s “job critical” like you claim, then you need to put that requirement in the job listings and On-boarding. Since I’m 48 hours away from my final training with a physical person, and I have yet to see anything that makes me think it isn’t just a manager trying to flex their tiny iota of tenuous power.

I know a guy who went through 5 cats in a few months because he was getting them, letting them out, and they were getting hit by cars since he lives on a super busy road that has heavy semi traffic.

It really reminds me of that one joke “I keep having to buy a new car because my neighbors dog keeps eating it” " it sounds like you’re just feeding cats to the neighbors dog"

Dude just didn’t seem to grasp simple addition that his new cat + outside in a bad area = squish

In totally, completely, and in all ways unrelatedly: smartphones on the rise, gigantic pickups and suvs are on the rise, and tactile buttons you can hit without looking at a screen are on the decline.

and anecdotally it seems like since covid and not driving as much, everyone seems to have gotten worse at driving and still hasn’t quite picked it back up yet.

Ultimately I was just done and had already been looking for another job, so I just went ahead and dropped the shit on the floor and spent the rest of the day chilling at the park. I even had witnesses to the insane bullshit.

My city painted lines in the road, and people still bitch about it 3 years later, the lines are almost gone from fading and chipping, and cycling is still dangerous due to some traffic specifically targeting them for harrasment.

I’m using my phone data because my internet got turned off today, I haven’t eaten since lunch yesterday (mostly depression, not lack of food in the place), my wife is angry about money because I still haven’t found a job, my plans for the holidays are all but gone, and I have no medications or therapists available in the next 6months to help.

I usually enjoy TPM memes but this just isn’t it.

I do now realize what community I’m in, though. I wish you well.

Actually, I’ve had more than one interviewer comment on it saying it “shows (I’m) prepared” since many people don’t bring anything to write on and sometimes have to ask for a paper.

As for whether that could be a bonus in getting hired? Meh. 110% depends on the field.

If the question is “will asking unnecessary questions and writing down answers help get this job” then I’d ask if the interviewer isn’t prepared for a couple innocuous questions, then it shows a severe lack of preparedness on their part and I’d question whether I want to work for a place where someone gets shook by their underlings daring to question them.

I fully admit I am already biased against nearly any company that I would be interviewing at, so I’m already more willing to get confrontational in interviews if I feel I am not getting the respect I deserve (you know, the basic human decency of treating every random person you meet as an equal until they prove otherwise worthy), and drop them to keep looking than the average person. I’ll eat ramen and peanut butter sandwiches for a few more weeks if I need to. I’ve walked out of interviews before.

I’ve walked out after the opening “greeting”. “alright let’s make this quick, I’ve got a dozen other interviews today” okay well if that’s how you treat someone here for a simple interview I can’t imagine how you treat your employees on a bad day, get fucked. I literally said “excuse me? You don’t talk that way in a professional setting.” and left.

Random shuffle really wants me to listen to a specific group of songs on revanced music.

Doesnt matter if I’m listening to rock, musicals, soundtracks, or medieval versions of “pumped up kicks”, it always brings me back to a handful of pop songs after one or two songs.

Which items/products were you once able to get from local shops on a whim that you now more or less have to order online?

Sometimes I find myself shopping for things that I’d prefer to go out and get within the same day, but now I’d have to order and wait a few days to get…So I’m wondering what some of those things may be for you?

Hobby shit.

There used to be a hobby shop in town that catered to all kinds of things, from metalworking, to mini figures, to sewing and leathercraft. Model kits, trains, science kits, and if I remember correctly they even had a small section dedicated to chemistry supplies.

That was when I was a child.

Now that I’m actually in to several of those things, it’s closed. My parents used to go for TTRPG stuff.

I’d love to not have to drive an hour and a half to pick up a leather stamp, or pop in to see if they got a new shipment of metals I need. And don’t get me started on outdoor hobbies. The best we’ve got is a few shitty national chain sporting good stores.

You’re already late for work.

Rushing won’t help that. Speeding won’t help that. Aggressively accelerating and slamming on brakes won’t help that.

By the time I’m late for work, it’s no more annoying than seeing it on any other morning where I’m still going to work, and still have to scrape at ice/frost.

Maybe it’s just not my personal compounding annoyance, because I certainly understand multiple minor annoyances piling on making you pissed.

Lpt: boil water at night before bed, so you can use it to melt the ice off the windshield. Just pop it in the freezer to keep it until morning.

My wife was having issues directly related to (caused by) things at work, and she called their mental health line.

The number led to an automated system that forwarded you to somewhere else, and even though it was solidly in operating times and away from meal times, it went to a messaging system

She never got a call back. Nothing was ever mentioned again.

Laugh tracks and audiences are the worst.

If your show requires prompting on when to laugh, it’s probably not as funny as you think.

Many shows just aren’t that funny when you take out the laughing, and if you were to cut all the awkward pauses the show would be 7 minutes shorter.
