grue,

Depends on your location. Where I live, chicken is cheaper.

grue,

Why do you hate consumer protection law?

grue,

If by “nonsense” you mean “exactly correct,” sure!

grue,

Adriano Celentano - Prisencolinensinainciusol

From en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisencolinensinainciusol:

Both the name of the song and its lyrics are gibberish but are intended to sound like English in an American accent.

Celentano’s intention with the song was not to create a humorous novelty song but to explore communication barriers. The intent was to demonstrate how English sounds to people who do not understand the language proficiently.

grue,

J’apprends la français depuis trois ans. (Mais pas a cause de la chanson.)

Stromae - Papaoutai (I found out it existed because Pentatonix did a cover of it)

That guy’s also got some other interesting songs, with quite a bit of social commentary: carmen, Fils de joie, tous les mêmes, Santé

grue,

But I don’t wanna secede, though! : (

(I’m in GA, US.)

grue,

Congratulations, you just reinvented basically the same thing (minus the “AI” buzzword) that Transmeta was doing a quarter-century ago.

grue,

I’ve wondered the same thing about the Octonauts.

grue,

Mac OS is actually at version 23 (they restarted the count at 10).

I'm so frustrated rn.

I have been distro hopping for about 2 weeks now, there’s always something that doesn’t work. I thought I would stick with Debian and now I haven’t been able to make my printer work in it, I think I tried in another distro and it just worked out of the box, but there’s always something that’s broken in every distro....

grue,

do you people think Ubuntu will work for me?

Yes.

Should i host LinguaCafe or are there better alternatives?

Hi, I just noticed the existence of LinguaCafe and i really like the idea. So I searched up their website and saw that they are still in early developement. I’d like to learn italian and that is currently an experimental language. So im wondering if there is a better service avaiable right now....

alternativeto.net/software/duolingo/?license=open…

Of the programs in that list, the only one I’ve heard of before is LibreLingo, and I’m not sure how good or bad it is. (It seems different enough from LinguaCafe that they might be complement each other more than compete.)

grue,

One of the reasons I love WarGames is that it shows the hacker character actually doing his homework to figure out the correct credentials to get into the system.

grue, (edited )

If I can’t expect to own it, then you’d better not expect me to buy it.

I think $700-800 for a server with SFP ports sounds like good value in terms of price relative to capability, but the absolute price and capability are probably overkill for a residential use-case (even a homelab one). It’s a no-brainer if you’re the Other Linus (the Tech Tips one) and have unlimited budget for all the latest electro-bling in your house, but if you’re any sort of normal person you don’t need 10 gig networking yet.

Does Minisforum make anything with 4 ethernet ports and a <100W TDP in the <$300 range? If so, get that instead.

Where can a Boomer catch up on current computer/software technology?

I have an eight-year-old laptop that needs replacing and I’m paralyzed. What are the most reliable ones now? Do I need a desktop for CAD? Pros and cons of operating systems (and where do I find them?) Browsers ditto? Where do I find answers that aren’t just product marketing?

grue,

Do I need a desktop for CAD?

Probably not, unless your models are really complicated or you do heavy duty finite-element analysis or something and thus need a high-end GPU. (If that were you, you’d know it and wouldn’t have needed to ask.)

Pros and cons of operating systems (and where do I find them?)

Linux is the best, but if your use-case is CAD you’re likely stuck on Windows because Autodesk etc. are run by assholes (in other words, because most CAD software only runs in Windows).

Browsers ditto?

Firefox, because it’s the only reasonably-mainstream browser that doesn’t use the same rendering engine as Chrome. You shouldn’t use any Chromium-based browser because allowing Google to have hegemony over web standards is bad for the Internet and society as a whole.

grue,

Of the ~100 billion humans who have ever lived, ~8 billion of them are still alive. Therefore, your chance of dying is only 92%, not 100%.

Might as well ask Lemmy how to pass the Kobayashi Maru test, while you’re at it.

grue,

You joke, but meteorite impacts causing large igneous provinces on the opposite side of the planet might actually be a thing.

(Uluru and Meteor Crater are provably not an example of this, though, for several reasons: they aren’t antipodes of each other, Uluru is five orders of magnitude older, and the phenomenon I mentioned would’ve been caused by way, way bigger impacts.)

Hardware question

Hello! This might not be the right community but I’m looking at building a new server and you operate in similar areas and might have experience with this. I’ve got a GPU without video outputs, can I combine that with a CPU without integrated graphics and still get video output from the HDMI located on the motherboard?

grue,

This might be an X/Y problem. Why do you think you need HDMI output on a server?

grue, (edited )

I’ve looked all over the Internet for <16" short-depth cases multiple times over the years, and I’ve learned the most important question is this: what do you want to put in it?

I’ll tell you right now that some of the things I’ve wanted, like…

  • A 2U with hot-swap caddies all the way across the front (like this or this, but <16" deep at the cost of fitting only an ITX motherboard), or
  • A 4- or 5U chassis that can fit an EATX / SSI EEB (12"x13") motherboard and an ATX PSU at the same time, or
  • A chassis of any size that has both the motherboard/PCI I/O and the drive bays on the front (front drive bays are normal and you can get front access I/O, but not both at the same time)

…simply do not exist, as far as I can tell. I’m pretty sure all of these things are geometrically possible (I did the math), but apparently I’m the only one who wants such weird stuff.

You can get a basic-bitch whatever-U case that supports a mATX motherboard and hard-mounting a couple of internal drives, with sharp metal edges, a shitty plastic door, and a price double (or more) what similarly low quality would cost in a desktop form-factor all day long, though.
