That’s not what half-life means. Half-life comes from radioactive decay and is the time for half the atoms in a sample to decay. After half the atoms have decayed it takes another half-life for half the remaining atoms (a quarter of the original sample) to decay. There’s some fancy maths you can do to convert a sample size of 85 million with a half-life of 75 years into the time it takes for the last atom to decay but at an estimation of about 27 half-lives that’s 2025 years.
Maybe that’s the real problem with boomers: their multi-thousand year lifespan!!
I keep thinking it’d be a good idea to patent a hand dryer that points the detector in one direction and the blower in another, such that to switch it on you have to move your hands out of the air stream, and to switch it off you have to move your hands into it. Your hands get dry not by the blower, but by the action of moving your hands to and fro between the detector and the blower.
Nobody would object or claim prior art because that would put them on record as directly admitting their products are shit.
Then sue everyone whose hand dryers do exactly that. I’d make a killing.
Hi guys! I think I’m over Joplin. Don’t get me wrong, it’s simple, it works, but… why is it Postgres db…. I have the server on a small box with like 250 GB of space and backing it up with kopia to Backblaze with free 10 GB, so I’m a bit storage cautious....
Yeah but when you’re young and stupid you have this idea that some slightly less young people are “old”. I remember when I was young and stupid thinking someone who was 18 was “old”.
The thing to look forward to is when these kids’ music starts getting played on “golden oldies” radio channels.
I think it started out with a rare case of honest advertising. So for example 720K floppies were advertised as 720K. But then some lying bastard clever marketer decided to start advertising their 720K floppies as 1MB floppies, sometimes but not always marked “unformatted capacity”.
And of course this had the desired effect of making people buy their disks instead of the honestly marketed ones, because people didn’t read the small print and thought they were getting more storage, which was important before CDs were a thing and software distributions were starting to need multiple disks. So everyone had to start doing it.
This is as far back as my memory of the practice goes, so it may have started before 720K floppies were mainstream, but that’s why disk manufacturers now advertise the unformatted capacity of their drives instead of the formatted, aka usable, capacity.
Your best focus at the moment is your degree, including during the holidays. You can Linux fanboi all you like after you’ve graduated, unless you’ve got some really strong personal convictions that push you in that direction, and it seems you haven’t otherwise you’d already be there.
I just received a call from an indian microsoft technician. He informed me that my PC is sending a ton of error messages to microsoft. Most likely it has been hacked, and he would help me by remoting in and fixing the problem for me. I just wonder… Is it my PopOs or my Manjaro PC that sends all this info to microsoft?
No. What he was saying is that everything you do starts off as a thought. So instead of policing your own actions, police your own thoughts and don’t entertain the bad ones when they enter your mind. Then when the opportunity presents itself - let’s say she indicates she’s up for a quickie behind the bike sheds, if you’ve already been fantasising about all the different scenarios you’re much more likely to take her up on it than if you haven’t. Therefore you should consider thinking about adultery as being just as bad as the act itself, even though it really isn’t.
I discovered today that my most played game on Steam is Astronner with about 500 hours, and my second most played is Surviving Mars with about 500 hours.
Hard to say, I’ve been on an OpenTTD (since Transport Tycoon), Dwarf Fortress (since .31), Minecraft (since Tekkit) and Factorio (since .11) loop for several decades now, with 1000s of hours in each. I tend to play one at a time, currently doing Enigmatica 6 Expert.
I used to check the front page at least once every day, and occassionally check specific subreddits. Now I don’t look at reddit unless theres some drama, like mods getting purged, then I’d go there and enjoy the drama. Occasionally there will be questions that only reddit has the answer to so I have to reluctantly use it. I...
Only for the naughty stuff. I’ve unsubbed from everything on my main account and haven’t logged in for ages, but not gone as far as deleting my messages (can’t be arsed, tbh). Lemmy’s Naughty Stuff For Wankers isn’t quite where Reddit’s is yet but it’s getting up there.

Be honest, do you still use reddit?
