letsgo,

That’s not what half-life means. Half-life comes from radioactive decay and is the time for half the atoms in a sample to decay. After half the atoms have decayed it takes another half-life for half the remaining atoms (a quarter of the original sample) to decay. There’s some fancy maths you can do to convert a sample size of 85 million with a half-life of 75 years into the time it takes for the last atom to decay but at an estimation of about 27 half-lives that’s 2025 years.

Maybe that’s the real problem with boomers: their multi-thousand year lifespan!!

letsgo,

No but if you’re a vegan you can’t have the stuff out of animals; you have to make your own.

letsgo,

Oh I dunno. You should take a look at Sir Humphrey’s monologues some time.

letsgo,

I keep thinking it’d be a good idea to patent a hand dryer that points the detector in one direction and the blower in another, such that to switch it on you have to move your hands out of the air stream, and to switch it off you have to move your hands into it. Your hands get dry not by the blower, but by the action of moving your hands to and fro between the detector and the blower.

Nobody would object or claim prior art because that would put them on record as directly admitting their products are shit.

Then sue everyone whose hand dryers do exactly that. I’d make a killing.

letsgo,

Oops I thought you were going to be ragging on an early jazz genre.

letsgo,

You think rubbing sticks starts a fire, but in reality it’s the worms that start the fire with their Annelid Magick.

letsgo,

Yeah but when you’re young and stupid you have this idea that some slightly less young people are “old”. I remember when I was young and stupid thinking someone who was 18 was “old”.

The thing to look forward to is when these kids’ music starts getting played on “golden oldies” radio channels.

letsgo,

It’s likely seen the image before. Try randomising the image, reversing some of them, altering the gamma, and adding some noise. See how it does then.

letsgo,

Not sure if you read your history book (the Bible), but he brought seven pairs of clean animals and birds (Gen 7:2-3).

letsgo,

They’ve been doing this for literally centuries.

I think it started out with a rare case of honest advertising. So for example 720K floppies were advertised as 720K. But then some lying bastard clever marketer decided to start advertising their 720K floppies as 1MB floppies, sometimes but not always marked “unformatted capacity”.

And of course this had the desired effect of making people buy their disks instead of the honestly marketed ones, because people didn’t read the small print and thought they were getting more storage, which was important before CDs were a thing and software distributions were starting to need multiple disks. So everyone had to start doing it.

This is as far back as my memory of the practice goes, so it may have started before 720K floppies were mainstream, but that’s why disk manufacturers now advertise the unformatted capacity of their drives instead of the formatted, aka usable, capacity.

Ideally it should be one of those irregular language thingies: someone who suffers from aibohphobia must be cibohphobic.

letsgo,

Only if they don’t claim they’re an expert.

letsgo,

Don’t Fuck With Paste - for all those stupid websites that think pasting my email address from my clipboard extender (Ditto-cp) is somehow unreliable.

letsgo,

It’s jumps, not jumped, otherwise there’s no S.

And I also prefer the sphinx one.

letsgo,

Your best focus at the moment is your degree, including during the holidays. You can Linux fanboi all you like after you’ve graduated, unless you’ve got some really strong personal convictions that push you in that direction, and it seems you haven’t otherwise you’d already be there.

My PC is hacked

I just received a call from an indian microsoft technician. He informed me that my PC is sending a ton of error messages to microsoft. Most likely it has been hacked, and he would help me by remoting in and fixing the problem for me. I just wonder… Is it my PopOs or my Manjaro PC that sends all this info to microsoft?

letsgo,

I once looked in Event Viewer and was gobsmacked by the number of wiruses and hackers in my compyooder.

Microsoft are NEVER, repeat NEVER, going to call you about your computer.

letsgo,

That’s why I draw them the other way round (-:

letsgo,

Found that function in about 0.75s. Click the username. Now click “Block User” which is on the top line.

letsgo,

No. What he was saying is that everything you do starts off as a thought. So instead of policing your own actions, police your own thoughts and don’t entertain the bad ones when they enter your mind. Then when the opportunity presents itself - let’s say she indicates she’s up for a quickie behind the bike sheds, if you’ve already been fantasising about all the different scenarios you’re much more likely to take her up on it than if you haven’t. Therefore you should consider thinking about adultery as being just as bad as the act itself, even though it really isn’t.

letsgo,

Hard to say, I’ve been on an OpenTTD (since Transport Tycoon), Dwarf Fortress (since .31), Minecraft (since Tekkit) and Factorio (since .11) loop for several decades now, with 1000s of hours in each. I tend to play one at a time, currently doing Enigmatica 6 Expert.

Be honest, do you still use reddit?

I used to check the front page at least once every day, and occassionally check specific subreddits. Now I don’t look at reddit unless theres some drama, like mods getting purged, then I’d go there and enjoy the drama. Occasionally there will be questions that only reddit has the answer to so I have to reluctantly use it. I...

letsgo,

Only for the naughty stuff. I’ve unsubbed from everything on my main account and haven’t logged in for ages, but not gone as far as deleting my messages (can’t be arsed, tbh). Lemmy’s Naughty Stuff For Wankers isn’t quite where Reddit’s is yet but it’s getting up there.
