otter,

it’s just about reading their implementation and providing an alternative implementation that doesn’t copy code…

That sounds difficult though. Didn’t companies have to set up ethics walls to protect against lawsuits for things like that?

otter, (edited )

Yep, also the ads don’t get initialized at all if the user buys the ad-free version (going to top all in the Lemmy Boost community should bring up the post about it). It’s relatively cheap and the dev is very active with bugs and requests. The dev is developing for the Fediverse and I’m happy to support that (as well as devs for Sync, Connect, Lemmy, etc.)

I like Boost and paid for ad-Free, but a lot of other clients should work for your needs. While they might not be privacy focussed, many are open source so you can check what is going on.

My preference goes

  • Boost (not FOSS, one time payment to remove ads)
  • Connect (not FOSS, ad free)
  • Eternity (FOSS & ad free)

I uninstalled the other ones and haven’t kept up with them. There may be better ones out there, these are the ones I’m keeping up with

otter,

I’ve used HTTrack in the past

It worked well for the websites that I tried it on and it’s pretty easy to run. You could give it a go?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTrack

otter, (edited )

I’m not familiar with the companies mentioned, but have you tried talking to the doctor or the clinic? They may be able to provide you with better guidance, or tell you about other machines that are compatible with your treatment plan. Even if they don’t know about the privacy aspect, that might give you a shorter list to follow up on.

My guess (or hope) is that this is the option that the average person finds convenient, which is why the doctor recommended it. There should be other options that the doctor / clinic knows about, especially because an IOT CPAP machine is a fairly new thing.

Doctors modify treatment plans fairly often, even for things like patient comfort, and bringing this concern to their attention could also change what they recommend to future patients.

Personal thoughts unrelated to your case: This is a growing concern with healthcare technology and I think we need more attention on the harms. “Your insurance company will use it against you” is something that most people will understand.

Using Disinformation Like A Pro (yewtu.be)

Disinformation is a criminally underrated technique for protecting yourself against doxing, data breaches, and tracking. But it’s important to use it right to be both effective and a law-abiding citizen. In this video, I share my tips and techniques gathered over the year to protect your privacy where tools fall just a little...

otter,

Is this just about lying on data forms?

John Smith 1900-01-01

I’d rather we use some other term for it instead of disinformation. Even if the official definition works, it’s unnecessary confusion

OP understands the risks, and they’re asking for tips on how to mitigate them if they have to make an account.

A lot of the comments here either missed or intentionally ignored the post body… Or the downvotes on the comment with a personal account saying how single women can feel safer if they can learn about a new person before meeting them.

People have different circumstances and perspectives :)

My advice for the original post:

  • Joining: You don’t have to join everything at once, figure out what you might need. This also depends on where you are because different platforms are popular in different places. LinkedIn is one of the few that are helpful in my area.
    • You can also start with Fediverse platforms if you prefer, but if you’re trying to connect with specific people that might not help
    • An alternative getting your name published on articles or blogs to fill up the search results
  • Usage: Do spring cleaning constantly. It’s a big task if you try to clean your feed all at once, and it’ll be easier for you to do it from the start. When you don’t like something/someone, unfollow or mute. You can do it in a way that the other person won’t know, if that’s important. A lot of the problems of social media can be avoided if you maintain your feed.
  • I’ll add more if I can think of them, good luck!

I think it can help to have some presence, even if it is to control what information comes up when someone looks you up.

You want this instead, you need the @ tag at the end else it won’t work for people in other instances

PhotoRestoration

Which you do like this:

[PhotoRestoration](/c/photorestoration@lemmy.world)

This is the universal link: !photorestoration

but it doesn’t work on some clients, so I like to include the above as well

otter,

A lot of the animal ones are pretty good, ex. !animalswithjobs

There’s also !goodnewseveryone , but that’s similar to upliftingnews

otter,

It also works with opening up the info to anyone, not just you. That’s one of the key issues, even if a trusted party is accessing the info there’s a chance that a malicious party can get access too. Or the trusted party becomes malicious later (government changes, company changes hands, etc.)

People generally don’t want everything in their home live streamed 24/7. If anything it has the potential for abuse, like if someone knows when you’ll be out of home for a few hours

otter,

Was there a particular post you wanted to see answered? I see a decent variety usually

otter,

Closest I got was Florisboard because of the customization options

The main things I’m looking for (in order) are

  • predictions
  • better support for emojis and gifs
  • built in translations

Google Keyboard works really nicely and it’s hard to give up on some of that

otter, (edited )

I think intent plays a role here. If the goal is to incite a reaction or to hurt a population by publicly burning something that they care about, it’s probably not a great to do

One of those things where you know when you see it, but it’s hard to define explicitly.

If anything, it might help as a temporary measure to reduce tensions and inflammatory incidents

otter,

Alternate link for clients that don’t support that one:

otter,

Long winded talk for shit?

what

otter,

Wider context matters

Two companies can advertise lockers with the same high quality lock, but one might still be better to use

  • if one company can’t prove they are actually using the high quality lock
  • if one company acts as a middleman, doing the locking/unlocking for you
  • if one company watches everything you do before and after using the locker, allowing them to infer what you are using it for

Even if we specifically talk about security, one is better than the other.

otter,

Also you CAN get your workplace to shift over to something else.

Not every workplace will change procedures, but some will. Especially if it’s software that handles local data or if there are high costs or privacy risks, they can be convinced.

Anyone else feels like they want to destroy their old sim and never give their contact to anyone ever again?

If signal gets the new username feature, this just might be what i do, so fricking tired of people just blindly giving random apps and websites their contact permissions and they get my contact as well, and there’s nothing i can do about it

otter,

It’s funny I just came from this post, which I suspect is this exact problem. Spammy apps collecting contact details and then tricking more people into signing up:

otter,

Well, there aren’t any working toilets anymore

Maybe this will help with the smell

It could help in a lot of other crises too

During a natural disaster, you could jump back and forth carrying aid in, and the wounded people out. In any time sensitive crisis, you could get people out of harms way. This bit is more complicated, but you could potentially help out during floods and fires, depending on how far the ‘teleport other stuff with you’ extends to.

A reasonable limit might be ‘Only what you could physically carry yourself’, in which case you’d need to be a lot more strategic. In that case, you could work on personal strength and be a one-human-rescue-team. When there isn’t a disaster, you could probably shuttle light weight (but important) stuff for a fee, then use that money to fund your own charity to do good

As for this prompt, you could probably just teleport away when someone might see you, or teleport to spots that people can’t see. So you could do most things that invisibility would allow

How safe are grammar editing tools?

Without naming names, there’s a well advertised grammar editing tool that’s available either as an app download or browser extension. This is something I’d value for a number of reasons (good grammar is important!) but I’m super cautious about anything I’m giving permission to watch what I’m typing....

otter,

This one is recommended by Mozilla

addons.mozilla.org/en-CA/firefox/…/languagetool/

It DOES still need to send data somewhere to check

Your privacy is important to us: By default, this extension will check your text by sending it to languagetool.org over a securely encrypted connection. No account is needed to use this extension. We don’t store your IP address. See languagetool.org/privacy/ for our privacy policy.

I don’t want to confirm details I don’t know, so someone else should probably explain more on if this is good/bad

You could post it to !medicine, but please tag it as NSFW and keep the discussion focussed on the medical aspect of the procedure (it sounds like that was the intent).

This is a community for medical professionals. Please see the Medical Community Hub for other communities.

Official Lemmy community for /r/Medicine.

Also note that it’s only recently become the parallel community for r/Medicine, and there may be people subscribed who aren’t medical professionals and may not appreciate it (they may downvote it).

If you do find more medical communities then please share. I’d like to add them to the post on the Medical Community Hub

otter,

Does he do other actions when he wants food/water/outside?

I’m picturing a dog annoyed that it has to use the buttons instead of being able to point at the water bowl 😄
