Adonnen, to linuxmemes in Yeah, very sorry that this app is Windows only, would love to switch to Mac

I much prefer Windows to MacOS. The fact it is missing decent tiling is a nonstarter. It’s too inflexible for my workflow.

And sure, Windows can be maddeningly inconsistent, but what really destroys the experience is the constant ensh*ttification. I know a lot of people here hate everything about Windows, but for me, it only sucks because Microsoft designs it to suck.

Not only are there ads and (some) first party lockin, I cannot trust they will continue offering updates, paywall feaures, restrict more functionality, or insert stuff like AI to mess up my workflow.

I used to think reliability was just about stability and bugginess, but now I think it is about trust as well.

lobut,

I use Amethyst on Mac for tiling: ianyh.com/amethyst/.

Not sure if that’s what you meant though.

Adonnen,

Looks nice, I’ll check it out if I have to use Mac OS again.

pineapplelover,

Let’s hope you don’t

fosforus, (edited )

Another good one is Magnet. Its weakness is that the tiling is manual, but once you internalize the keybindings, it’s good enough. And because it’s manual, it doesn’t screw up your windows like all the others seem to (for me at least).

Sway on Linux beats all of them hands down, though.

lobut,

Is that so? I’ve been wanting to try a tilling manager for Linux, thanks for the recommend!

fosforus, (edited )

If you must use X11 for some reason, i3 is the OG. Sway is Wayland. But yeah, I think those two are pretty much perfection.

Was I the only one that didn’t like having personal chats in the same place as servers?

This seems like a huge UI improvement tbh, and I’ve been using Discord for years on mobile and desktop.

Anticorp,

The discord UI has always been confusing hot garbage. If they’ve done anything to address that then weeee!

c0mbatbag3l,
@c0mbatbag3l@lemmy.world avatar

They essentially took notifications/settings from the bottom corner and the personal chat section and just made a four panel bottom menu with individual icons for each. They’re simple in aesthetic but fairly clear, in my opinion.

So it goes as follows.

Servers -> Private Chat -> Notifications -> Settings/Account

Otherwise it’s the same as far as I can tell, really. I can still swipe to go back in servers, etc.

Anticorp,

Yeah I just checked. It’s still hot garbage, but slightly less so. I think this is actually an improvement.

pixeltree,

WarlordSdocy, (edited )

I just hate that I can’t swipe to easily to get to servers from messages anymore. You still can but it takes a second to load now after swiping and it’s not as consistent to get it to do it.

Edit: Also removing the member list for a server being on the right when you swipe is annoying too.

I used the beta UI for a while and imo the new one is worse since it brings backs some of the old UI (i.e. the 1:1 port of the desktop UI for the server sidebar). What they had in the beta UI for server selection was so much better

vox,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

yeah much easier to reach.
the new ui is buggy but that’s obviously not intentional

GTG3000,

It’s a departure from the desktop UI and it made the whole thing much clunkier.

I will be fair, moving the button to the bottom row is more convenient if you have a lot of servers to scroll up through and use the DMs a lot, I don’t care about that as much.
What I do care about is how the rest of it changed. Can’t just quickly swipe into the DM list and back any more, if you exit the DM that’s it, you gotta click on it again. Switching between DMs and servers is more clunky, a bunch of UI I was actively using is broken up. They broke the search function, and the new way to check channel participants (click on the title) is uncomfortable as hell compared to old “just swipe to the right”.

Personally I hate the new UX even if some bits are an improvement. It’s just too much stuff to change all at once and not for the better.

Khrux, (edited )

I’ve often had this silly scenario in my head.

You walk into a celebrated high class restaurant, and at the bottom of the menu, it reads “Human meat steak. $10,000”. You ask the waiter who fetches the chef. The chef comes out and explains that after decades honing his craft, he feels like he’s a master of his craft, and now he’d love the honour of cooking a steak taken from his own body. If anyone purchases the steak, a skilled surgeon will remove half a pound of meat safely from the chef, who will then prepare it for you, and the chef is visibly keen to serve this.

As a vegetarian, I honestly don’t feel that this would bother me, if I had money to spend, the only reason I wouldn’t go for it is that I’d worry the chef would come to regret giving up chunk of his ass or leg or whatever, and I’d be partially to blame, or that the chef was not thinking straight otherwise.

Most entertainingly, I think it would be vegan.

I think this is a fantastic thought experiment. Thanks for sharing.

rwhitisissle,

This situation kinda reminds me of John Locke talking about slavery. He says that for some rights to be truly inalienable, that people themselves should not have the ability to willingly surrender them, such as by willingly selling themselves into slavery. Now, yes, John Locke owned stock in a slave trading company, so he’s a hypocrite in that regard, but I digress. I feel like this is one of those things where people shouldn’t be allowed to physically sell parts of their body for consumption, as “not being eaten by other people” is one of those inalienable rights we should have as a society.

oshitwaddup,
@oshitwaddup@lemmy.antemeridiem.xyz avatar

Jokes on john locke, i’m an organ donor anyways 😎

but to a degree I agree. in that chef example, at any point the chef could revoke consent and stop at any time. Likewise, somebody shouldn’t be able to sell themselves into slavery but it would be fine to agree to do work for free or under slavery conditions as long as you can revoke consent at any time. But the right should be inalienable such that nobody should be in a position where they could be coerced into doing that, it would have to be 100% voluntary and enthusiastic. Like if somebody was in a position where it was either agree to being a slave or be homeless or starve or otherwise suffer, then I would argue society has failed them, we didn’t protect their rights adequately

rwhitisissle,

Jokes on john locke, i’m an organ donor anyways

Right, but there’s no more harm that could come to you after you’re dead, so being an organ donor wouldn’t really qualify in this context. Your organs being donated after death diminishes you in no way and also potentially enriches the lives of others.

Jorgelino,

You don’t have to be dead to donate organs. And donating something like a kidney does impact your health.

rwhitisissle,

Sure, but also on a very basic level organ donating is not the same thing as selling yourself into a lifetime of inescapable slavery.

Jorgelino,

For sure, but i’d argue it’s maybe comparable to the chef example.

TipRing, to memes in alternative to trees

While it’s good to be skeptical, algae tanks like this are actually a good idea for the use-cases for which they are designed. Places where trees would be difficult and expensive to grow. The tanks more efficiently capture carbon, require less maintenance, produce fertilizer as a byproduct and the solar panels on the tank produce enough extra power for there to be a USB charger on the bench. The goal isn’t to replace trees with tanks but to use them where it makes sense to do so.

ridethisbike,

This was my thought as well. They should be used in addition to, not as a replacement for, trees, bushes, and grass.

It does make me wonder, though, whether or not we could use these to help capture more carbon than we’re creating.

Sanyanov,

That would require a gigantic scale of operations, and trees are just waaaay more economical.

Think of entire oceans full of algae not being enough to stop what’s currently going on with ecological situation.

anarchy79,
@anarchy79@lemmy.world avatar

Too expensive to grow trees? Thank god capitalism is saving us so much money, we are all so rich now that we can simply buy oxygen tanks instead of having to deal with those money sucking trees and plants.

I think this is funny, but it's hard for me to hate too much on flatpaks. Disk space is practically free now, and having spent a good chunk of my career fighting DLL hell, I have a lot of sympathy for the problem it's trying to solve.

AlexJD,

Honestly this. It’s so nice to not have to hunt for a specific library that depends on 20 other libraries. I’d rather pay in disk space than deal with that.

taladar,

You also pay in security holes.

Pantherina,

Its good and bad. Bad because the base system cant use it and its not the main packaging choice.

Lots of good apps like OBS use outdated runtimes, which simply should not be used anymore. I am not sure if this is a security issue but probably it is, and it creates this unnecessary Runtime bloat.

    But this is different error from what you mentioned before. So I’m asking what dependencies conflict in your case? Libboost?

    You either don’t understand what’s being discussed here, or you’re trolling. Google it yourself if you want to know more.

    FooBarrington,

    How do Flatpaks follow “black box philosophy”?

    catastrophicblues,

    Honestly I get both sides of it. Your view makes sense as an end-user and from a philosophical perspective. But some people have legacy software that needs conflicting dependency versions, for instance. It’s just a trade-off.

    Synthead, (edited )

    Yeah, package maintainers should have their dependencies figured out. “Managing dependencies is too hard” is a distro packager’s problem to figure out, and isn’t a user problem. When they solve it and give you a package, you don’t need to figure it out anymore.

    Plus, frequent breaking changes in library APIs is a big no-no, so this is avoided whenever possible by responsible authors. Additionally, authors relying on libs with shitty practices is also a no-no. But again, you don’t need to worry about dependences because your packager figured this out, included the correct files with working links, and gave them to you as a solved problem.
