IzyaKatzmann, to science_memes in He did though.

For folks that don’t know, Venter had a company, Celera, they competed with the Human Genome Project (HGP) run by the US Gov’t. They developed interesting techniques to sequence, I believe they are credited with shotgun sequencing.

How were they able to compete?? The HGP published all their work openly, Venter and co used the freely accessible data alongside their own proprietary methods to try and sequence the human genome first themselves.

If I recall correctly it was considered a tie and they both jointly published the first sequenced human genome in Science.

windowlicker,
@windowlicker@hexbear.net avatar

shotgun sequencing predates celera and the HGP, but yeah

IzyaKatzmann,

Aw crap, my bad, appreciate the correction. I thought they applied it in a novel way or something? Anyways Venter’s business practice sucks.

windowlicker,
@windowlicker@hexbear.net avatar

yeah, from what i remember, they pioneered a form of it called double-barrel shotgun sequencing, where both ends of the sequenced DNA fragment are analyzed for overlap instead of just one.

IzyaKatzmann,

Eyyy, coming in with a save! Thanks! I appreciate the info.

At work we have a scale sensitive to the 1/10,000 of a gram. 4 decimal digits. It’s so sensitive it needs to be encased in a box so tiny connection currents don’t make it go frantic! Even in the box the number changes a lot. 15 0s is nutty.

Convection currents?

Mango,

Yes. Heckin Gboard.

Donjuanme,

Mine can tell if I’m sitting next to it’s desk or not. I’ve come to the conclusion it’s the deformation of the ground the desk is sitting on.

It’s really a silly amount of precision for what I use it for. But It’s so fun to lock g on .0000, even if only for a few seconds. Anyone who has a target of a specific amount of 0s can do it themselves. After the first 2 shits pretty random.

And a hit of acid would show something between 0.0000 and 0.0002 on the scale.

It’s fair to imagine the challenges a building team would face 2k plus years ago.

Like in this example, building levers that are strong enough to lift the load. I bet they broke a bunch of stuff.

But eventually they figured it out, via trial and error. Levers, ramps, etc. They probably couldn’t describe why those things were inherently the best way, but more approached from the “we tried 9 other ways and they suck. This is the best way.”

Next, the phrase “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic” is relevant here, but in a backwards way.

Since we struggle to imagine what it would take for an ancient society to master the techniques to build these things, we therefore begin to grasp for unrealistic conclusions (magic…read…aliens).

Same goes for Europeans building cathedrals and stuff, the trick is the history, the methods and the results were more documented and understood.

There are some racism concerns that I think go beyond and around what I’ve discussed, which is more abstract. I’m not discounting the other topics, just not covering them here.

IHadTwoCows,

One thing is for sure: you can’t leverage those stones with a primed FJ 1x6 from Lowe’s. I’ll bet they went through quite a few of those!

… am I the only one who learned 1+100, 2+99… to make 101 times 50 pairs? Lmao feels like it’s much easier. 101 × 50 = 5050

nova_ad_vitum,

Sorry if this is stupid but how to deal with sums to odd numbers ? Won’t you have a number left over after pairing all the others?

0x0,

Nope, because what you’re doing is copying the entire sequence, reversing it, and pairing up each element left to right. There’s no way to have any leftovers because the original sequence and the new reversed sequence have the same number of elements.

A perhaps less intuitive way of thinking of it is you start with a sequence of 1 up to N, which contains exactly N elements. The sequence from 1 to N and its reverse together contain 2N elements, which is by definition an even number, regardless of whether N is even or odd. Because it’s even we can break it into pairs without leftovers.

LordGimp,

Add the last number onto the end. So the sum of all numbers between 1 and 101 is 50 pairs of 101 plus one extra 101 and the end. It’d end up being 5050 + 101 or 51x101 or 5151

stolid_agnostic,

This is my first time seeing this problem. Interesting that they taught it in school.

LordGimp,

Had a statistics and probability class in hs instead of the standard precalc. I feel it’s more applicable for students now than precalc anyways. It felt pretty cool to sit down in class and figure out the odds of winning on a lotto ticket and when the odds indicate you should buy a ticket.

stolid_agnostic, (edited )

Yeah pre-calc is pretty much remedial math nowadays. You don’t even get 100 level math until you’re at intermediate algebra!

Thinking of it in terms of statistics makes a lot of sense, I can see how this problem would help develop intuitions.

0ops,

The math is the same, you just wrote it more “casually”. For me it was 0+100, 1+99, 2+98 … 49+51 -> 100 x 50 = 5000, then add the 50 that was missed from the middle for 5050. But yeah I remember coming up with that when I was really young.

fossilesque,
@fossilesque@mander.xyz avatar

Good thing I’m not a chemist. 😅

Telodzrum,

It’s both, you’re mixing different phylogenies. Any alcohol prepared for consumption is a solution of water, ethanol, and various other substances (almost all water or alcohol soluble). Ethanol in aqueous solution is also a strong solvent (pure ethanol is a less effective solvent, but a solvent nonetheless).

Bebo,

So it’s a solution that can be a solvent.

Maoo,
@Maoo@hexbear.net avatar

Alcohol refers to an alcoholic drink (like the martini held by this sophisticated cat). Water and ethanol (99% of these drinks) are miscible, so are always at least a solution with one another. The additional flavor compounds that make drinks different from one another tend to be in solution as well.

Also I never blocked moderators of communities that I enjoy because the system with moderators and user blocks is kind of fucky on here. I don’t think is right to block a moderator.

Nah, replication is enough, shows interest. This meme was stolen, thus it lives on as a vehicle. The intention here is to simply get people interested in the world around them. Not sure what the original goal was. This one just has a little more .jpg than the last. I’ve seen variants of this one, regardless. This is an old one.
