I just did some searching for the best grind size settings for my Aeropress. Some of the search results led to Reddit, I clicked on them and felt a bit dirty lol. Funnily enough a few of results still led to private groups. Reddit will still be a source of information about niche topics. Let’s hope Lemmy becomes that source instead…
As a kid, age 8-10 or so, I used have a recurring dream about a girl who lived next door. I would go play outside with her. We’d play something different every night. The funny thing was that I had no girl living nextdoor. I lived in a rural area outside a small town with no families with kids around.
Years later I see this girl in a bar, we’re both 17 at this point. She looks exactly like the girl from my dreams, only a bit older. We’re now married and we have 2 kids.
I have what I call movie dreams, sometimes they are fantasy, sometimes they are more non-fiction. Sometimes I am myself, other times I am a character and there’s even been a few where I am merely the camera -as I’m im not in the dream just observing. One of the fantasy ones that stands out was pirates fairies and elves, but in space. I was a shapeshifing fairy that was tasked with protecting a group of elves from pirates. I was setting decoys and running from and fighting pirates.
I’d just use www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_value_available.html for an estimate of value / price, and then build a spreadsheet with the same results for good candidate components but the prices in your market.
For memory, hard drive and power supply just check you meet your requirements and check reviews (and buy an established brand).
I think the hardest decision right now is deciding between DDR4 and DDR5, as that’ll affect your motherboard options too.
But there is no universally best option as the prices and availability vary massively by market (and even moreso if you include second-hand too!). Even asking others isn’t that helpful if they aren’t in the same market as you.
Remember to always buy electrical tape, extra thermal paste and cleaning alcohol too. The anti-static band is worth it if you are somewhere dry / with a lot of static shocks, but most components have better protection these days. And always read the motherboard and case manuals first, so you don’t make it way harder for yourself to connect the front USB ports, etc. later on.
Us early adopters have some advantage in that we have grown with the communities. You’re now looking at a much larger list than we did.
I would search for stuff you’re interested in and subscribe to them. Then maybe look at the mods and see what else they have posted and commented on. These will likely be people that are engaged well on lemmy and may have similar interests as you. Maybe subscribe to places they are engaging with.
After you have a solid base of 20-40 communities, use the All feed and sort by newest posts to try and find stuff you may be interested in and are active. That will show stuff from lots of other instances.
“Try again.” Particularly involving schoolwork. Derelict teachers then complained when the result of trying again would be identical, to the letter, for the same reasons as the first time. But teach? They did not.
Same. Relay was the one for me. So far Connect for Lemmy has been the closest I’ve found. No button nto clear read yet, but the mark read on scroll and collapsing comments function is here. So it’s in good shape to start.
I’ve been on liftoff for a bit now, and I seem to gravitate towards it more than any of my other attempts to connect to the fediverse, I have to admit!
I would have done a monthly sub thing if I knew the money would’ve gone to u/dbrady, but I refuse to have one cent of my money go to Reddit.inc.
I live in Bangkok. Buying a decent capacity dehumidifier (LG MD19GQGA1) was one of my best decisions ever. I don’t understand why they aren’t more popular here. Cuts down on the bill for A/C too.
Every place I have lived here the A/C has had trouble bringing the relative humidity below 60%.
Everywhere else I go (friends, shops) where there is A/C has it blowing hard at 24 degrees celsius, but it is still humid and thus uncomfortable. Xiaomi sells those portable temp/humidity meters for really cheap.
30 degrees celsius at 50% (or lower) relative humidity is so much more comfortable then 25 degrees and 70% relative humidity.
I don’t understand why they aren’t more popular here.
As somebody from a humid climate, who moved to a much drier region - it’s probably because we kinda like the humidity
Does it suck to be all sweaty during summer? Yes, absolutely. But my skin requires much less moisturizing and my hair changes to a nicer texture every time I am back in my childhood home. I just avoid going there in summer months!
There is a difference between healthy and unhealthy relative humidity. The annual average here is 80% which promotes mold growth. Healthy is between 40-60% which even with A/C is hard to achieve in the wet season. A dehumidifier creates a winter-like environment for significantly less costs than running the A/C (and its compressor).
When I researched this subject I found humidifiers to be very popular. Hard to believe when the average relative humidity is 80%. They are used to grow marihuana indoors (in growing tents).
All my friends here are on it (dehumidifiers, weed they already had) now too. Not easy to find because the little stock you’ll find is sold out quickly. Low budget 1L-a-day dehumidifiers are plenty available though, but they won’t do much unless you’re living in a closet.
What’s considered “healthy” and “optimal” by research conducted by and on folks living in the higher and drier northern latitudes doesn’t always match what people in the tropics “feel”.
The annual average for humidity is 77% where I grew up, and highest humidity is around 88% during the monsoons. Well outside your healthy range. My childhood home doesn’t have air conditioning to this day, so I do feel these humidities whenever I’m there. And I like it, unless it’s peak summer (I adore the monsoons - it’s my favourite season, and I miss that I don’t really have “proper” monsoon rains where I live now). Most friends who still live there also adore the monsoon weather - though they hate that their clothes takes days to dry after a wash, and other inconveniences. None of them use dehumidifiers, or complain of humidity outside the summer sweating season.
The annual average where I currently live is 55%. Which is pretty high on your healthy range. But my skin feels dry AF, even with daily moisturization, my lips crack if I drink < 5L water per day, and my hair has this brittle texture I don’t like. All of which disappears after a week in my childhood home.
So high humidity might promote mould growth (though I have never encountered it myself, it’s entirely possible we will find some if we break the walls down), but to people who grew up with it, it can also feel comfortable. Hence the market for humidifiers, with air conditioning on the rise - rather than dehumidifiers.
Once I dreamt I was stabbed, and I can still feel the sensation of a blade tearing my flesh, despite having never had more than a nick.
Plus a super real, super long dream that spanned decades. I lived an entire other life. I grew up with a best friend either named Emma, or Emily. I saw her every day. We grew up together, had families alongside each other, lived our entire lives. I still miss her, despite the fact that she never existed.
It’s a great point. This kind of legislative activism is frequently done in public on Twitter, Facebook, etc. as well so the risks are low in general but it’s still something to make people aware of. It’s a real contrast with anything that’s direct action, where the fediverse is a non-starter.
Have I visted reddit, yes. Do I use it? No. I have grown to love lemmy. Disconnecting from a hyper charged, conterversy seeking website has done me good!
Well when positive thinking and taking stock of my achievements and thinking about how far ive come doesnt work.
I order way too much pizza, buy just enough alcohol to get somewhat drunk but not so much ill get wasted and maudlin and I watch the shitty 90s comedies I loved as a teenager.
I used to have a repetitive dream when I was much younger that felt incredibly real. The crux of the dream was always the same, I would fall through a hole in the pavement and I would usually wake up when I hit the bottom. Sometimes it would feel like I was falling for ages. I would always wake with a jolt too.
Dreams about falling are very common. I have read that it usually happens when our body falls asleep after then our mind can comprehend so we get a jerk reaction that wakes us up.
I have also read that sometimes these dreams are due to anxiety.
