Milk but no “non-dairy milk” option?

001100010010,
@001100010010@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Non dairy milk is still milk for the purposes of this poll.

(I didn’t even know there was such a thing, sorry for my ignorance.)

Zoldyck,

Out of curiousity, where do you live? Alternative milks (like oat-milk, soy-milk, almond-milk, etc) have become very popular the past few years.

001100010010,
@001100010010@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Oh shit I knew I was missing something. How could I forget soy milk lol. It’s hard to think with depression…

Edit: USA, East Coast

ekky43,

Pretty sure it’s not actually milk when plant based. Like, there’s wheat extract, which tastes pretty much identical to skimmed milk and can be used as a substitute, but (as far as I’m aware) you can’t advertise it as milk in the EU.

Which, and I’m sorry, brings me to one of my pet peeves. Don’t label plant alternatives as “vegan meat”. It’s either vegan or meat/diary, not both! What’s even the point in making fake meat? To have some chum accidentally buy fake meat, only to find out and become annoyed and resistant towards plant based alternatives?

Make frigging original ideas. Like “wheat chocolate” where people have no preconceptions, instead of “non-milk milk chocolate that totally tastes the same as real milk chocolate, we swear you won’t be disappointed!”. And then you taste it, and it’s just barely off. It doesn’t taste bad, but it’s not what you expected when you though about milk, so you become disappointed and avoid other really good tasting alternatives which might have stood a chance if not being directly compared to an already established market standard and favorite.

And yes, that chum might just be me, and although I’ve been presented with some really good tasting alternatives that I’ve come to love, I still absolutely refuse to buy/try any “Vegan meats/diaries”.

Would much rather just have some ratatouille, grilled mushroom, or wheat chocolate instead.

Rant over.

BadAtNames,

Counter Rant

I don’t understand the insistence in the western Anglophone world that milk automatically means cow’s milk.

Coconut milk is a very normal word to say in my mother tongue (Bengali). What else are you even supposed to call it? Coconut “beverage” or “liquid” would be hella confusing because we wouldn’t know if one means the milk (the creamy liquid that comes from pressing the coconut pulp) or the water (the transparent liquid that resides in the pulp, and tastes and behaves completely differently). Are we supposed to go invent a new word every time we encounter a milky liquid?

Also, what about other mammalian milks? Do we need to invent a new name for goat milk? (Which is a fairly common drink in India, possibly thanks to Gandhi’s obsession with the stuff) What about sheep milk (not very common in India, but widely used in some parts of Europe). Or Yak’s Milk? (Pretty popular in specific pockets of India).

Milk is any white creamy liquid. That’s how it has always been used, in English and in other languages, going back centuries. The cow agriculture industry must have mounted one hell of a PR campaign to convince western consumes that milk automatically implies it must come from a cow. In India, you just look at the packaging. Does it have a picture of a cow on it? Well then it comes from a cow. Does it have a coconut on it? You guessed it, it comes from a coconut. Simple. I don’t see how that can ever be confusing to customers.

Rant over

BitSound,

Almond milk has quite a long history of being called as such: historydollop.com/…/almond-milk-the-medieval-way/

ekky43,

Thank you for pointing that out. Yet, in a world where refrigerators are commonplace, and where the grip of the church has lessened, the term “milk” has come to be almost exclusively used for diary. So much in fact, that many find it misleading to use it to describe non-diary products.

Milk is one of the many words which have changed their definition over the past millenia, albeit, not as drastically as many other words. And we might come to a point where no one uses diary milk, or where milk once again also covers almonds, but this is not yet it, at least not in the EU. And to use it to cover both anyway, will likely push a lot of people away from more plant based alternatives.

jmp242, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

Hmm, not really. As I’ve said before - a lot of the news stuff is also on Ground News, WaPo, Mastodon or Lemmy. There’s no great replacement for /r/sysadmin, but that needed replacing as it got to be useless over the last few years. I don’t know if there’s a /c/changemyview or not, but that isn’t necessary.

Actually, I just spend more time doing other stuff for entertainment - read more books, catch up on more podcasts, yes watch more youtube, TV, Movies whatever. Go outside, walk the dog. I’m kind of surprised how much time I can spend on lemmy lol.

Seriously, it’s like the Crypto Corral over there. At least last I checked.

JoeClu,
@JoeClu@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t know what a Crypto Corral is. Do you mean it’s mostly crypto interested people? A few others have said it’s where right wingers hang out. Are right wingers crypto people? I’ve no idea.

whynotzoidberg,

I think you can find extremists on all platforms. But the thing that really turned me off is that 9/10 posts had to do with crypto. It’s just not my bag, and the folks on Nostr embrace it (even the platform itself, allowing bitcoin payments over the lightning network).

JoeClu,
@JoeClu@lemmy.world avatar

I guess that’s one of the selling points on how Jack will make money. Get a small percentage as a fee for each micro payment. I guess that’s their revenue model instead of advertisers. It makes sense to not be beholden to the whims of advertisers perception potential market loss (i.e., censor things or lose revenue). But like you, I’m totally not into the crypto thing.

Obsession, in Have you had any bad experiences with people on Lemmy?

A comment on my other account got brigaded by tankies a while ago. Was told to “fuck off, liberal”

But then that guy got banned from the instance, and everything was good.

JoeClu,
@JoeClu@lemmy.world avatar

Hi, I’m not in in the know. What’s a tankie? Pardon my ignorance.

OwenEverbinde,
@OwenEverbinde@reddthat.com avatar

Short version? Mix and match the following:

  • Pro Xi Jinping
  • Pro Joseph Stalin
  • Pro Mao
  • Pro use of tanks against civilians as in Tiananmen Square in 1989 or Hungary in 1956.
  • Pro Vladimir Putin

Basically a tankie is any apologists for government violence against civilians – usually by claiming something like, “those weren’t real civilians. That was a color revolution. The government of [authoritarian regime] responded with no more than the necessary amount of force. Western propaganda is making it look more violent than it was in reality.”

From Wikipedia

The term “tankie” was originally used by dissident Marxist–Leninists to describe members of the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) who followed the party line of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU). Specifically, it was used to distinguish party members who spoke out in defense of the Soviet use of tanks to crush the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and the 1968 Prague Spring uprising, or who more broadly adhered to pro-Soviet positions.

JoeClu,
@JoeClu@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks. Did not know that. So tankie is short for military tank. I get it.

twei,

luthis,

Yeah theres a few too many genocide apologists hanging around, but (just to spite them) i dont want them to be banned. Its better they stay here and see the light

phorq,

Yeah if they’re banned then they’ll go back to their bubble saying they’re being silenced, but how can you silence someone who’s not contributing to the conversation?.. I’m fine with different opinions, but I don’t understand people who think the way to convince someone of your viewpoint is hostility. Telling someone to “fuck off” with no reason is just toxic. Once might be a bad mood/state of mind (happens to the best of us), but repeat offenders shouldn’t be allowed to keep harassing others.

luthis,

Perspective. That comment says more about a person who cant concieve of a logical rebuttal than it says about me. I dont want to live on sesame street. That said, those comments get old reeeeal fast

ArcheTelos, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?
@ArcheTelos@lemmy.world avatar

I still hang out mostly on Reddit. As much as the site’s gone downhill, I’m mostly active on the fandom-specific subs, which don’t have nearly as much of a presence on Lemmy. The general meme communities have been flourishing, but the fandom communities are basically ghost towns, and even those that see a bare minimum of activity are far from enough to pop up in my feed. Right now, /r/yugioh has ten times as many online users as /c/yugioh has subscribers period - and that’s one of the more active niche communities I follow! I’ll still be keeping an eye on Lemmy and post to both sites when I can, but we’ve got a lot more growing to do before I’m ready to finally ditch Reddit.

Also, Reddit has the hentai. The specific fandom subs at least have small barely-active communities here but their NSFW counterparts are totally nonexistent.

jmp242,

Given it feels like Reddit is getting rid of NSFW content (API changes on that too) - maybe try finding other locations for that content? I’m honestly surprised how many people used reddit for that kind of content. Never would have occurred to me lol.

outbound, in What are some ways Lemmy could be destabilized?

Ummm… Reddit is not a “cash cow” - quite the opposite, Reddit bleeds money. But, overall that’s not impacting your question one way or the other.

Both of your points are way over-the-top and unnecessary to discredit Lemmy. They certainly don’t have to even touch Lemmy itself, they simply have to leverage their own platform and their own userbase to circulate negative views of Lemmy and keep people coming to Reddit. They also don’t have to pay news agencies - users seeking trusted media is no longer a thing in a world of social media; some clickbait articles on crap websites are all that’s needed and those will be distributed (and redistributed) for free if they’re jucy enough to attract readers.

Some attack avenues which come to mind:

  • Maxist-Lenonist roots of Lemmy itself, along with digging up the backgrounds of various admins around the world and posting wild accusations of their moral character
  • Lack of moderation and circulation of far right-wing and left-wing theories
  • The structure/reliability of federation. Volunteers running servers which talk to each other, you sign up with one server and who knows if it’ll stick around; and if it does disappear suddenly, then you have to join a different instance and start all over again.
  • Conspiracy theories on how/why Lemmy instances are funded. Secret funding from Chinese/Russian governments looking to subvert “the west” through social media? Collecting “dontations” to run Lemmy and diverting the money in support of terrorism?
  • Small userbase and relatively small amount of content compared to the vastness of Reddit
  • Lack of centralized contact for legal issues - from takedown notices for copyrighted content to privacy to right-to-be-forgotten legislation. And, sooner or later, there will be revenge porn and sigh child porn popping up. Federation is going to multiply the issue as posts are propogated and many dozens/hundreds of admins will have to be contacted to take action.
  • Your entire post history is open to all - whether it be for training AI, to someone looking to scam you, to governments of the world keeping a close eye on you.

But, to be honest, Reddit doesn’t have to do any of that to maintain their position at the top of the heap. All they really have to do is look internally and stabilize Reddit. Remove Spez and replace him with someone who can build a vision and knows how to communicate. Spend money on their own app to make it usable and accessibilty-friendly. Spend money on a marketing head (and team) who can create a workable/profitable advertising program. Probably, they’ll have to shrink down Reddit’s scope and remove the NSFW subreddits, figure out a way to deliver ads to all users, and adjust costs for “premium”/ad-free experience and API access to roughly equate with with revenue they would have received serving ads. If Reddit puts a new CEO in place and announces the vision for the future withing six months and implement the changes within another six months, they’ll likely keep 85% of their existing userbase.

Lose some weight if you're obese, make sure to eat healthy and check if you have any sort of conditions, specifically the heart, that could affect your cardio. With the weight, I lost a ton of weight just before I came to Korea, but since then got more than half of it back. I need to figure out how to lose it again.
