guessing you haven’t seen the massive defederation wave against anything racist or bigoted. this complaint is a about a non-issue.

Is there a list of known racist instances that I can use to defederate my instance from?

god,
@god@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yes sir, there’s lots of lists. Go to any instance that is a safe space and check out their defederation lists.

Look at beehaw defederated list. That should give you an idea.

Fun fact, lemmynsfw is not defederated by beehaw.

AceFuzzLord, in Do you think there will be a future where your phone can automatically detect if you are trying to record police activity and disables your camera? What do you think the odds of this happening is?

I believe that eventually in the future it might become a “war” between the police having some form of device on them that prevents a phone from even being able to be turned on within a large radius, let alone being able to record audio/video, and those trying to record such acts. If anything, it might also turn into a thing of people turning to creative and innovative ways to get around that technology in that potential future and the police responding with updates that make whatever we use to counter absolutely meaningless.

It might turn into a thing - if it happens/becomes reality - that the vast majority people get used to it, similar to how in Japan, phones made specially for their market are required to have a sound go off when the camera is used. That’s a future we don’t want or need.

OwenEverbinde,
@OwenEverbinde@reddthat.com avatar

My one hope is that police departments (being bureaucratic organizations) might be so slow to update to the latest camera-disabling hardware / software they they may turn out consistently one step behind.

momentary,

They will absolutely use this as a way to grub for money. It’s early, so I can’t think of how exactly they would spin this as a public safety need, but I’m sure there is a way they will twist it.

OwenEverbinde,
@OwenEverbinde@reddthat.com avatar

I can imagine those “support our police officers!” charities mailing out some nonsense like,

Officers are being surveiled and monitored by foreign secret agents, MS-13, and Soros-backed Antifa groups!

This puts our officers in danger and disrupts their attempts to serve our community. To root out crime and ensure officers’ safety, we need people like you to donate so selfless officers can afford countermeasures that protect them from this dangerous surveillance.

dr_catman, in Who is the third faction in the leaked Google memo about AI?

huggingface is full of models not created by a large corporation. Maybe they mean those?

Obi,
@Obi@sopuli.xyz avatar

Can I, as a dumb end-user, use models from there?

dr_catman,

Yes! …well, with a caveat.

Huggingface models (even the ones published to the platform by Google or fb) are available for anyone to use, but they’re not quite intended to be chatbots; they’re more like pretrained machine learning models for data science pipelines.

Still, if you know python or are willing to learn, you can use huggingface however you want. You’re totally allowed to download a model, open it in python, and ask questions to it. Or feed it a long text and ask for summaries etc.

Obi,
@Obi@sopuli.xyz avatar

Yeah no I guess I’m more looking for the open-source end-products I could use similarly to chatGPT or midjourney etc. I did learn a bit of python a while back but I’m no coder.

philoko,

Yeah, Oobabooga let’s you easily download models from HuggingFace and has a chat interface.

EtnaAtsume, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

I certainly do. Sometimes I have to get over the hump to actually GO to the gym on workout days but I’ve never once (well, okay, one workout I had one time after going regularly for years did leave me unsatisfied - I will admit that) finished up a workout and been like “what a goddamn waste of time and energy”.

Bitwarden is the exact app you just described. I use it. It’s great.

I’ve been using KeePass since the dawn of time. There are now other good options too, but I haven’t seen any compelling reason to switch. It does everything I need both securely and well.

gamer, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

Yes! I love it. It’s almost a meditative experience for me, kind of like when you’re in the shower alone with your thoughts. Also, since I’ve been regularly working out for a couple of years now, I’m at a point where if I don’t work out, then I start feeling like shit.

Is there anything the rest of us can do to cultivate such a mindset?

Idk, but I definitely did not like it at the start. I just sucked it up and pushed through, making sure I did it on a regular basis. Eventually, it stopped feeling like a chore and started feeling like a part of my routine, like brushing my teeth in the morning or showering in the evening.

shapesandstuff, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

Lifting is ok, going TO the gym sucks.

I’ve always had sporty hobbies so at least I’m somewhat in shape. Over the years I did karate, parkour, bouldering, football, volleyball, and ive been deeeep onto hema for a long time now.

I just love having an activity that is basically “playing” but very physical. Even when i feel like I’m not progressing, I’m still having a good time and get to completely exhaust myself once a week.

Dippy,

Rock climbing and bouldering combine the fun of a puzzle with a workout and very real goals/improvements you get to work towards. It’s also not just “I did 5 more pounds!”

For me I hate a squat rack or bench but climbing never really feels like working out.

Globulart,

Couldn’t agree with this more. I started climbing a month ago and I’m fully obsessed, it’s like a sport designed for people who like video games. Each route is a level that needs completing and the initial progress is so fast and rewarding that you just want to come back and beat that grade that you couldn’t get a week ago.

I have a 6c which I fall asleep thinking about right now, the crux seems so doable from the ground and then feels impossible when I’m there. I bought a hangboard to train finger strength so I can beat it faster, and that is definitely more akin to working out, but I see it more as grinding or overlevelling to beat that piece of shit boss you’ve died to 10times in a row.

Bouldering is like a phone game, each level is less than a minute long and requires a specific skill to be unlocked to beat it, over time these skills combine to allow you to beat a harder problem without you even realising you’ve levelled up. Top rope is like a console/pc game where levels take longer to complete and rely on managing resources and your strats.

It also helps a ton that I feel 5x healthier already and am stronger than I’ve been in my life. Climbing is seriously awesome.

RotaryKeyboard, in What can a senior desktop support tech do who is burned out?

This happened to me in my mid-thirties. I tried a couple pivots. One was to web development, which I found didn’t really help the burnout. So I pivoted again to project management. Project management doesn’t pay as well, but the hours and workload are far easier to deal with. It’s also a lot more accepting of older workers than IT is. Find yourself a project management position in IT somewhere. If you can get one in information security you could build up some time in that sector and get the CISSP, which would open a lot of doors to great paying jobs.

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

I tried Project Management and did not succeed at it. I am thinking of the DevOps course of action. I am still relatively young at 46. I’ll try and make the pivot.

perishthethought, in What can a senior desktop support tech do who is burned out?

Hey person, I was in tech support for about 6 different companies, over 8 years. I left that to become a consultant. Best move, for me. It’s a lot like TS but you earn more and make money for the company, instead of being a cost center.

I taught myself some coding before I got my first job. JS and web technologies in my case. If you’ve been successful in TS for years, you could do this next.

SolarNialamide, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

I definitely do. My dumb-dumb brain doesn’t really get the whole neurotransmitter thing, but as stingy as it is with dopamine and nor-adrenaline, as generous it is with endorphins. Oh, you’re 5 minutes into your cardio warm-up of your hour long work-out? Enjoy this heap of endorphins for the next 2 hours. I feel good, it’s extremely meditative because thoughts are just on pause, I love getting stronger and more in shape, and I always go in the sauna at the end of my work-out which is a huge motivator before going and makes it all even better at the end. I always walk out of the gym completely zen and satisfied.

If you don’t get such an easy endorphin rush, I don’t know what to do. I can imagine it would suck in that case.

aCosmicWave,

My brain tends to be stingy across the board 😊
