small44, in Where do you go on Lemmy for reliable news and politics?

I don’t

ejsexton82,

I learned on Reddit not to trust any world news or political news posts. I was tricked a couple of times by fake posts. I still browse the posts, but I take everything I read with a grain of salt.

I use news apps for my news.

reddig33, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

Could be paid promotion. I get a lot of suggestions in my feed for some really awful music in genres that I never listen to. I wouldn’t be surprised if the record label is paying to put it there.

I am guessing you probably viewed enough of these videos that YouTube’s dumb algorithm is like, “Oh hey @V01t45 wants to see right wing stuff so let’s show him that.” I agree that it is very annoying. This is why we need to rally behind starting to use PeerTube and cancelling YouTube.

const_void, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

Because ‘conservative’ content gets a lot of engagement (ie ad money). The more they recommend it the bigger the audience, the bigger ad payout. They’re literally monetizing hate.

Marry rice. Cause I be Asian.

Fuck bread. Cause mmhmm bread.

Kill pasta.

Bishma, in multiple identities, but it's me!
@Bishma@social.fossware.space avatar

Identity seems to be an issue with the fediverse. I keep 2 active accounts, one on a Lemmy server and one on a Mastodon one. It gets extra confusing when I use Mastodon to post to a Lemmy community. Then, back in Lemmy, I see me but it’s not me but it is me.

kafa, (edited )

so you can!?!

I can see my lemmy.ml uer from mastodon and even communities (called groups on there).

From the smell of it it seems something that mastodon allows, for specific federated services, but it’s not out of the box for all activitypub fediversed services/instances

Edit: what i find strange is that there is a clear way to verify websites to me, with a rel=me relationship. But there is no clear way to say “those other federated identities are the same of me”.

I get that the rel=me way is well known and well used, but allowing for this concept in the protocol of a federated service seems to be important.

At least, I care about the concept of digital identity and I would think for a distributed and federated and ever evolving network like the fediverse, this would be quite a common place to be

CAPSLOCKFTW, in Does the reddit style format breed toxicity?

Mastodon was very depressing for me, this follower centric self presentation stuff is super not my style, it don’t want it to be about me, I most likely suck but I say smart things some times, so I want it to be about the stuff I say.

Plus I don’t mind being downvoted into oblivion. I actually think that this can be a good thing. It means that there was something at least controversial about what I posted so I might be wrong or have to argue better.

Lastly, mastodon is too much safe space and filter bubble. I want to read things from people that I disagree with and I want to argue with them in good faith. When I tried this on mastodon, I got misquoted, blocked, harassed… You name it.

Joe_0237,

Thank you for your insight!

While this post is actually fine and within the community guidelines, we don’t have the bandwidth to moderate it properly - and it really needs moderation. For that reason, I’m going to lock rather than remove the thread. Thank you for the high quality post.

FartsWithAnAccent, in Does the reddit style format breed toxicity?
@FartsWithAnAccent@lemmy.world avatar

IDK, I think most of the toxicity comes from when something gets popular. I never read much into the votes on reddit because it’s usually more influenced by when you post than what you post. If you combined all the karma of my accounts it’d probably be in the millions but mostly I was just trying to either help people or make them laugh, never cared much about the points.

NAS89, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

Follow up question: why won’t YouTube Shorts trust me when I say I don’t want to be recommended channels.

So…many…dancing…trends. And they keep sending more.

NightOwl,

YouTube algorithm only cares about engagement not likes or dislikes. It has a neutral impression of likes and dislikes and only cares if people are actively leaving impressions. Whether it’s from liking with joy or disliking with anger engagement is a sign to show more. I’ve heard contrary to logic it’s better to just skip immediately and not press anything signifying reception to the content shown, since it’ll perceive it as recommendation to show more.

NAS89,

Yeah I can understand that for likes/dislikes or comments of “this is dumb”, but after hundreds of “do not recommend this channel”, the algorithm should be able to tell a lack of interest in a particular content.

Anticorp, in Where do you go on Lemmy for reliable news and politics?

I do my best to avoid both.

eric5949, in My AR 15 wont cycle. Any ideas how to fix the issue?

Idk what you expected here dude, especially on lemmy.ml. I don’t know but I hope you find your answer.

Dinodicchellathicc,

I was just hoping things would be different here than reddit. Turns out we’re all just ex redditors.

haych, in What's your opinion on all the Reddit alternatives?

There was one a few years ago that has since shut down. I think it was called Ruqqus or something? Using the website I think it was the best out of all the alternatives I’ve tried, the site was well made and enjoyable, good features and tools (open source, but not federated)

Only problem was the userbase was nothing but far-right users, so racist and bigots.

I think Lemmy is good, once the apps become more polished and refined then it might become my favourite.
