I have a pattern which really works for me where I wake up, brush my night guard and brush my teeth with no toothpaste and then eat breakfast. That way I don’t have the horrible mint toothpaste / orange juice clash I’m sure many of you are familiar with.
Then at night I floss and brush with toothpaste, and put in the night guard.
I used to make myself floss only every other day (like if I didn’t floss last night I MUST floss tonight), which I highly recommend rather than sporadic or no flossing. But I recently upped my game to “every night except special occasions”.
That could be it. I don’t know YouTube’s algorithm, but typically they work by finding what other users watch the videos you watch and recommending you other videos those people also watched. I wouldn’t be surprised if the guys watching blacksmithing videos also tend to watch Joe Rogan and the like.
You can change what instance you use to one that defederates with the places you don’t want to participate with. Also, some apps allow you to hide specific instances through a UI option.
I’m not a fan of idea of completely getting cut out from parts of the fediverse because of ideological differences. Imo that just promotes further polarization. Though I might look into blocking couple instances if and when I get annoyed enough lol
Finding stuff on Mastodon is more about hashtags. Eventually, by subscribing to #stuff you’re interested in, you will discover accounts worth following. The Tusky app allows you to subscribe to hashtags like to an account. I don’t follow people anymore, I follow topics!
If youre really into that, you should have signed up at Beehaw. They have downvotes disabled.
Personally, Imma keep doing it. Not because Im petty. But if I really disagree with something, I feel like it helps me avoid replying with something stupid or hurtful.
Downvotes really shouldn’t be for comments or submissions that you disagree with, but for anything that does not add to the conversation. Reddit started off with this guideline too, but at some point votes turned into agree/disagree.
People always said the same thing on Reddit too, but there’s a lot of stuff that “adds to a conversation” that needs to be downvoted. Just because something “adds to a conversation” doesn’t mean that the people shouldn’t express that it’s an awful comment or viewpoint by downvoting.
For instance, on a history article about Nazis someone could say “well some were bad, but not all were. Plus the good they did around the world was actually a lot better than people give them credit for like introducing a universal basic income or providing their citizens with jobs and healthcare for all.”
Like… it’s a viewpoint… but by not downvoting that viewpoint you’re basically allowing someone to say Nazis aren’t bad. Which to me is why the downvote button is there in the first place. Good, well thought out comments that add to a conversation should be upvoted, but awful comments should be downvoted too. People just need to be more well intentioned about when they’re downvoting a viewpoint they disagree with.
I agree. I’d say that expressing a viewpoint that derails the conversation and people already know is wrong definitely does not add to the conversation, and should be downvoted.
There’s a really big difference though between communities splitting off Reddit and split from an instance here. I still have my Lemmy.world account but I’m defaulting now to this one. Lemmy.world is a great starting point for people to branch from and pick from there.
You can still access your communities without visiting the instance.
I totally get that but I want to grow Lemmy and want users to join Lemmy. They won’t if they could just subscribe to our communities. Plus I don’t want threads to benefit from my content if I post to instances federating with Threads
Is mastodon worth signing up for, as a content creator?
I used to be a pretty avid tweeter - I’d post random things related to my job (software engineer), like gotchas I encountered, new articles I’d written etc etc, but I left Twitter when a certain somebody took over.
I’m not bothered about a large following, but I did enjoy randomly helping people that would see my tweets and fix their issue / help with the thing they were working on.
I did end up creating an account, but I’m not sure about posting my handle here as I want to keep the things separate (especially as I’m using my name on mastodon).
This is more of a support question than an Ask Lemmy kind of question. I’m going to remove this post per rule #3 - check out the sidebar for suggestions on where you can get further support.
