Dirk, in Dilemma with contributing to niche Communities on Instances federating with Threads
@Dirk@lemmy.ml avatar

That’s the good thing with federation. You can participate in communities without visiting the instance even once.

tenth,

What if I don’t want to post on lemmy.world anymore, because I don’t want Threads to benefit from my posts/comments.

I want people to come to Lemmy for its contents. Why would Threads users join Lemmy if they can subscribe to our communities instead?

As this post was deliberately made to fuck with me, I’m going to move to Utah and marry all of them.

yarn, in What is the best peice of media you ever interacted with?

Bach’s Chaconne from his violin partita in D minor.

It’s a song that was written around the time when Bach’s wife died, and if you listen hard enough, you can almost hear that it’s about her. It sounds like there are two voices, a low voice and high voice, who meet and fall in love with each other, and experience all the highs and lows of life and then are torn away from each other by death in the end. And it’s all done with just notes on a violin. And what’s more, it was written 300 years ago! It trips me out thinking about how somebody can write something so epic for a single instrument so long ago.

Jacsha Heifetz’s version of it is my favorite. Some people don’t like how fast he plays it, but he does the ending the best, in my opinion. You can hear the pain and denial and chaos of the two voices trying to enjoy their last moments together and leave nothing unsaid between each other most clearly the way Heifetz plays it.

Itzhak Perlman’s version is very good too. He plays at a slower pace than Heifetz, and has a more epic sounding tone. The highs and lows are generally more epic sounding the Heifetz, but I don’t quite understand how Perlman plays the ending. I have no doubt that he’s trying to tell the same story as Heifetz, but there isn’t any of that pain and chaos like Heifetz has. I’ve seen interviews with Perlman, and he seems like a very happy and well adjusted guy, so maybe that explains why his ending is so different. Maybe that’s just how the ending is for happy people like that, and I can’t comprehend it.

There are other good renditions to check out too, but Heifetz and Perlman are my favorites. Hillary Hahn and Nathan Milstein are other popular ones. Plus a bunch of others. That’s another cool thing about Chaconne. Everybody has their own rendition.

Lakes,

I listened to both. I see what you’re saying about Jacsha Heifetz’s version, it almost cuts through you. Emotions like pain and grief don’t hit slowly in the times of death. Great links, thank you.

Glad you liked it! Yeah, I love Perlman’s rendtion, but Heifetz’s just takes the cake for me. The ending is too real.

NightOwl, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

Algorithms. It’s why I use newpipe on mobile and freetube on desktop. Both allow me to import and export my subscription list, and block ads and have sponsorblock support.

But, most importantly it doesn’t make use of the Google algorithm to try and recommend me videos that might be of the radical nature on misinterpretation of past viewing history.

Sorry but: TLDR

tenth, (edited )

I thought I made my question clear

Should I continue contributing to my niche communities on Instances I do not share my view with, or build similar communities on other Instances?

For example runeterra community only exists on lemmy.world, but I don’t want to post on lemmy.world anymore, because I don’t want Threads to benefit from my posts/comments. I want people to come to Lemmy.

Should I create a new runeterra community lemmy.ml instead (lemmy.ml blocks Threads)? What would you do?

You can see what Google (thinks it) knows about you.

  • Go to your Google Account (myaccount.google.com)
  • Manage your Google Account
  • Select Privacy and personalisation.
  • Under this Data & privacy page you’ll find History Settings, Ad Settings, and more.
  • For example, go to Ad Settings and click on Ad Personalization.
  • Now you’ll see How your ads are personalized.

I think you can even remove stuff if you want.

ktpossible, in What's your favorite rabbit hole to go down?

I like to google the cast of whatever tv show/movie I’m watching and look at their Wikipedia page.

Lemmylefty, in What are the most appropriate responses to some very uncomfortable and awkward questions?
@Lemmylefty@lemmy.world avatar

“How’s the job search coming?” is usually meant to be encouraging, but it can feel like a stab in the back if you read it as “still unemployed, huh?”

What can help is to approach this from a “seen any job opening that piques your interest?” view. Think of 2-3 positions, locations, etc., that you can talk about with some interest. Maybe you’ve never worked in that field, so you tell the person that you hadn’t considered it before and what might draw your interest, or there’s an opening in a city/place you’ve never been and you can talk about that. Most people aren’t looking for the spiel, so this satisfies them without embarrassing either of you.

This doubles as practicing interview questions (“why do you want this job?”) that you’ll need in the future, anyways.

You need a rice cooker. My instant pot suffices as a rice cooker, and it’s perfect every time.

Pixelfed is going to introduce such a feature soon: mastodon.social/@pixelfed/110683611384204420

What are you even talking about, here?

Lemmylaugh, in For everyone new to Lemmy, how are you finding the experience?

Worried about the future of fediverse, all it takes is a few external bad apples and servers will start defederating. Also even less internal bad apples who decides to make specific desirable features proprietary with the goal to amass the majority to users. Both of these are bad for the fediverse.

some_guy, in Breakfast suggestions?

Toasted bagel with peanut butter.

But when you have time for it, try adding scrambled eggs. It sounds insane, but the eggs and peanut butter compliment one another in the same way that fried chicken and waffles make a surprisingly good combo.

SojournerWeaver, in I need to survive for 3 days without pooping, and eating as little as possible. I can pee, but not very often. It can't take up too much space. What food do I pack?

You’re doing a medical study for money and you don’t like to poop in public places. That’s my guess.

FeatherConstrictor, in Liftoff. Lemmy app. Do you like the way it works now?

So far liftoff has been my favorite and I love the ability to have multiple accounts logged in at once and the ease of browsing from different instances. The UI is nice and clear and it’s my favorite from the ones I’ve tried. I still wanna try boost out!
