Tischkante, in What do you think of people making memes/jokes about the recent Titan tragedy?
@Tischkante@kbin.social avatar

I don't want to limit my empathy to people who only meet specific qualifications.

Biscuit, (edited )
@Biscuit@kbin.social avatar

I think jokes and empathy can be somewhat orthogonal. In fact, I think any stable society/org requires a court jester. But dang, the amount of dehumanization, lack of empathy, and sometimes joy, I see is really scary. There are some angry, empty, people on the internet, that I hope to never meet in real life.

Piramic,

I noticed this in the combatfootage subreddit. The things that were said in there were disgusting sometimes.

I'm on the fence about it. On the one hand, the memes (at least the ones I've seen) were heavily influenced by the article in The Atlantic a week ago about orcas attacking yachts, tapping into the justified vein of resentment against out-of-touch billionaires - a label which can apply to three of those on board the Titan. The fact that these people paid $250,000 each to go down and sit near a shipwreck that they couldn't see (portholes would be a dangerous pressure-point) instead of using that money to actually benefit humanity in a time of widespread hardship is questionable at best - and what does the company they gave this money to spend those millions of dollars on? Obviously not quality-controlled safety tests.

On the other hand, there is the human dimension of the teenage son who was terrified about the trip and only went as a Father's Day bonding experience with his rich dad, or the French naval expert who was genuinely knowledgeable about the Titanic and had recovered many artifacts from the wreck over his life, which represents a genuine loss of expertise.

So I smile when I see the pic of orcas banging pans and saying "billionaires, it's safe to dive now!" But I don't go out of my way to find those memes or exult over the deaths.

The important first step is preparation. You need to clean the pipes. There should be nothing left inside you before you commence on the trip. So take some laxatives and do some cleaning. After you’re thoroughly pristine you must only consume a clear liquid diet, so clear juices and soft drinks (make sure you consume the full sugar version because that’s how you’ll get your energy). Take a multivitamin each day. On the second or third day take an Imodium, this is likely overkill but you won’t poop. Return to a normal diet on the third day but do so gradually over the course of a day or two. I cannot guarantee that this method will not damage your health and the risk will likely be greater if you have other health conditions, but you wont poop sooo.

Agree with 1 and 3. I haven't seen the other ones, they seem interesting.
The only one I can think of right now, because I've seen it like 3 times, is The Internet's Own Boy.

buycurious, in What is your favorite way to spend money?

I’ve learned that I’m much more likely to splurge on food (like more expensive brands or new products) than on other things.

I’m not much of a spender overall but subscribe to the mantra of “if it separates you between the earth, it’s worth spending a little more (like shoes, tires, mattresses, etc.).

I really enjoy video games, crafts, dnd, reading, and taking care of my critters. I have one dog, 2 cats, and 10 ducks. I will be getting a puppy next weekend. My dog is a beagle, my cats are just regular tabbys, and the breeds of ducks I have are: 4 French white muscovies, 1 jumbo Pekin, one regular Pekin that's crippled, 2 cayugas, a golden layer, and a khaki campbell. The puppy I am getting is a goldendoodle.

I work in IT as a tier one help desk tech as a means to feed and shelter myself and my critters.

asjmcguire, in What do you think of people making memes/jokes about the recent Titan tragedy?
@asjmcguire@kbin.social avatar

Making jokes is how people cope with tragic events.
This is why there is the on-going debate, that no topic should ever be unavailable to joke about.

I remember that the very same day that Princess Diana died, people were saying "Died in a nasty accident" and that was before the days of the internet being popular, that was a joke that spread around the country by text message.

LadyAutumn, in Does anyone else hope the bulk of Reddit stays there?

I definitely hope the... simply massive amount of information stored there is archived in some way. I was troubleshooting some technical issues for a very niche hardware and software application this morning and the only sources I could find were on reddit.

I feel similarly about Discord. There is so much technical knowledge and information that would be lost in the blink of an eye if Discord shut down.

IntheMesh,

Tbh the problem with Discord is that its search and indexing functions just suck ass in the first place. I already treat anything posted in Discord as ephemeral information that stops existing once it leaves my view. In that sense i hope lemmy instances for tech support/ troubleshooting take off. Much easier to archive.

zero_iq, (edited )

Best case scenario for reddit, I think, would be for its IPO to fail, spez and investors call it quits, and it eventually ends up maintained by a not-for-profit foundation in the way that, say, Wikipedia or Blender is.

Either that or it dies, its database published or scraped, and ends up accessible through archive.org or something similar.

EDIT: or a crowdfunded buy-out by John Oliver 😆

!datahoarder did a great job archiving all of reddit and making it available on archive.org. 13.23 billion archives and counting. So personally I just grab reddit links, change them to old.reddit.com and put them in the wayback machine

BirdLawyerPerson,

I believed this up until the blackout protests started happening, and Reddit shit the bed in responding to the protests.

I went back and sorted through my top comments in tech support, home improvement, other troubleshooting Q&A type subreddits, across my different accounts, and started editing those answers to be short phrases summarizing what the comments used to be. I'll eventually remove them, too, but maybe the indexers will update their cached copies to be the totally unhelpful versions they are now.

Gormadt,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I helped a lot of people with niche hardware and software troubleshoot things for years on Reddit, I'm planning to leave my comments up because of that.

The amount of times I would search for something to only find threads of people asking about an issue followed by comments that say "deleted by [X software on github] in protest for [issue that was solved years ago]" and responses praising the deleted comment for helping them is too damn high.

Or hell trawling the internet archive for dead sites trying to find solutions.

I don't want people to have to go through that.

I don't care where my answers come from, I just want to troubleshoot crap in a timely manner.

MrsDoyle, in It would be cool to have Lemmy pen pals. Asklemmy, what are your hobbies and what's your life like?

Hi! I'm 70, so retired and have many hobbies and interests. At the moment it's beekeeping and coastal rowing that take up most of my time. I took up rowing after arthritis put paid to dinghy sailing, and it's fantastic. I gave up racing this year but I sort of miss it. I keep bees with a community group, we have 15 hives on two sites. I'm also into photography, hill-walking, knitting, travel, gardening, all the old-lady stuff. And I enjoy tinkering with tech, I run a club website and a blog for a friend. What else? Baking, jam-making, DIY... I'm sure there's something I've missed. Oh, I made a pond and some frogs moved in, so I guess frog-watching? Is that a thing?

I always had penpals when I was a kid. My mother had one when she was a girl too, and finally got to meet her when they were in their 60s.
