I definitely hope the... simply massive amount of information stored there is archived in some way. I was troubleshooting some technical issues for a very niche hardware and software application this morning and the only sources I could find were on reddit.
I feel similarly about Discord. There is so much technical knowledge and information that would be lost in the blink of an eye if Discord shut down.
Tbh the problem with Discord is that its search and indexing functions just suck ass in the first place. I already treat anything posted in Discord as ephemeral information that stops existing once it leaves my view. In that sense i hope lemmy instances for tech support/ troubleshooting take off. Much easier to archive.
Best case scenario for reddit, I think, would be for its IPO to fail, spez and investors call it quits, and it eventually ends up maintained by a not-for-profit foundation in the way that, say, Wikipedia or Blender is.
Either that or it dies, its database published or scraped, and ends up accessible through archive.org or something similar.
!datahoarder did a great job archiving all of reddit and making it available on archive.org. 13.23 billion archives and counting. So personally I just grab reddit links, change them to old.reddit.com and put them in the wayback machine
I believed this up until the blackout protests started happening, and Reddit shit the bed in responding to the protests.
I went back and sorted through my top comments in tech support, home improvement, other troubleshooting Q&A type subreddits, across my different accounts, and started editing those answers to be short phrases summarizing what the comments used to be. I'll eventually remove them, too, but maybe the indexers will update their cached copies to be the totally unhelpful versions they are now.
I helped a lot of people with niche hardware and software troubleshoot things for years on Reddit, I'm planning to leave my comments up because of that.
The amount of times I would search for something to only find threads of people asking about an issue followed by comments that say "deleted by [X software on github] in protest for [issue that was solved years ago]" and responses praising the deleted comment for helping them is too damn high.
Or hell trawling the internet archive for dead sites trying to find solutions.
I don't want people to have to go through that.
I don't care where my answers come from, I just want to troubleshoot crap in a timely manner.
I have no problem telling people I'm into video games (playstation and nintendo - mostly zelda right now), movies, and reading (lotr, stormlight). For some reason it feels like people shy away from saying they're into those things. Everyone knows you watch TV at night. No need to be coy about it. I'm also into soccer (playing and watching top 5 leagues) and music (playing guitar and piano).
I always love meeting other Sanderson fans. I feel like it's a really tight knit community. I'm looking forward to the discussions that we will be able to have on Lemmy someday when more people join. Journey Before Destination!
Have you played the new Zelda game?
And your a fellow masochist (i.e. Arsenal fan)? How long have you supported them? Who's your favorite player?
You need nuts/seeds. Peanuts, sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, pistachios. Any high fiber nut and seed will do. If you can get it in bulk, the better. Like 10lbs should last you for well beyond 10 days. But if you need to shit your brains out, well, uh. There it is.
Having unlimited power means you control everything. You have no time to enjoy your power because you're constantly making sure the laws of physics stay and balance so the universe doesn't dissolve.
Chef (35 years in the industry) moved family out of the US in 2019, opened a restaurant 4 months before covid, run it with my wife…still here & have a great vibe.
Hike (not too much now, gimpy tendon & old) Bike (shifted down feom road to mountain/trail) Beach (every day in the summer) Travel (so far we have been sticking with exploring more of our adopted country) Eating
Since a lot of the exodus was prompted by conflict, I wouldn't be surprised to see a higher proportion of folks here who speak conflict as a first language, at least for a while.
I kind of feel like without purposeful and diligent pruning, all online communities sink down to the lowest common denominator. That's hard to manage since a community is as much a vibe as it is conforming to a set of explicit rules. Personally I like the tildes.net code of conduct, since that's basically a similar philosophy.
That's a really solid take, but I'd say there's 3 practical types of conflict: discussion (disagreement with a lot of thought put into it - a category that I'd like to think my comments frequently fall into), shitposting (disagreement with little/no thought, or sarcasm), and hostility ("nah that's stupid, go !@#$ yourself").
The first 2 categories are the lifeblood of a very large number of thriving online communities. The last category needs to be unilaterally expelled from every corner possible.
More seriously, while I deleted my Reddit account, I haven’t tried to avoid landing on some Reddit threads linked from Lemmy, and for the past few days I’ve looked closer at comment sections, because I’m noticing I had forgotten how rotten they were compared to here. So much pointless aggressivity.
I think it’s credible that if Lemmy was to keep growing, that issue will also keep growing as you have noticed. So, a bit like op, I’m hoping it only grows big enough to keep the open source projects interested and staffed; but not so much so that most of the sucky aggressivity stays on Reddit or elsewhere permanently.
I repeat this a lot, but I think the most important thing to do is to stay sincere and not be a defeatist. No arguing just to win, but no hugbox mentality either.
I have no doubt at all that the reddit admins and powermods were algorithmically pushing flame bait and hatred (especially to the political subs) to drive traffic to the site, so now that we've have a place where that isn't possible (yet, at least), I'm interested to see if that's just the nature of political discussion on the Internet.
I don’t know, I think even in real life people get silly when discussing topics they have strong feelings about, and politics seems to be one of them fairly often.
I guess all I’m saying is I understand your point and it makes sense to me, I’m probably just a bit less hopeful than you are (and I commend you for it!)
It's the idea of a New Sincerity, or post-postmodernism.
Yeah, the world is turning to shit, and nothing matters. So what? What are you doing to make it less shit?
It's the idea that you should be trying to save everyone with the understanding that a small portion are just too far gone to be saved, and you should focus on the ones that you can, because even if you just save one person, that's still a net positive.
I love video games, board games, music, and traveling. I used to love programming too, but working as a software dev for as long as I have has kind of killed that passion 😅
Life is great! I feel very fortunate to not have a lot of stressors in my life. I hope that’s more common than it seems these days!
Yeah, that's why I never encourage people to work in something they love. It will kill your passion for it. Instead, do something you can put up with and find something you like about it. What video games and music do you like?
Oh I completely agree. Funny enough, I never intended to do it as a career. I always wanted to be a pilot. But unfortunately the FAA considers me “medically unfit”, so I had to go with my backup plan.
For video games I’m all over the place lol. I’m a huge fan of 2D platformers, so Spelunky 2 and Hollow Knight are pretty high up on my list. I’ve played a ton of OSRS over the years, but I’ve been taking a hiatus for the last few years. I imagine I’ll start playing again eventually! Besides that, some of my other favorites are Factorio, Terraria, Dark Souls/Elden Ring, and Divinity Original Sin 2. There’s just too many to even name haha.
For music I’m a metal fan, specifically progressive metal. But I really enjoy electronic, rap, and classical as well.
Wow, similar thing for me, I have a 'bicuspid aortic valve' which means the aortic valve in my heart is a bit funky and doesn't push blood through as it should. And that makes the FAA also deem me medically unfit. I think there is a process to get a medical exemption, but with the cost of getting a license so high already, I just decided to stick with MSFS. I get to 'fly' a 737 like I wanted as a kid, learn all about it, but I'm not shelling out thousands and years of my life (okay, maybe I am shelling out some money but I like pretty airports!)
That’s a bummer! For me it’s Narcolepsy, and because the only medication that works for me also disqualifies me, exemption isn’t an option for me.
MSFS really is awesome! The level of detail with the planes blew my mind. Come to think of it, I haven’t tried playing it again since I upgraded my PC. I should give it a shot!
That's awesome! Some pretty great games you've listed. I also love Dark Souls/Elden Ring and Hollow Knight as well! Those are intense games, but getting the platinum in them is fun. I also love God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Mario, and Shadow of Mordor/War. But my favorite game of all time is Zelda and I've been playing the new one basically non stop.
I assume you're excited for Silksong? I just hope it gets released sometime in the next 10 years.
Not said yet but just some salt dissolved in water. I remember not pooping for a week coming out of a hospital stay that had me on morphine. Tried the stool softeners and such. But lemme tell you. An 8oz glass of warm water with a teaspoon of salt and 30 minutes later it was go time. When I say go time I mean be ready, when it hits there will be no delaying it.
So uhh, step one: get cholera (it lives on shellfish, and plankton do with this what you will, lick some shells or something)
Step two: ingest cholera
Step three: try not to die
