Cyder, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

Maybe you have the same problem I have: my wife is still a republican. When that kind of stuff shows up, I know she has been watching it on the family PC. She’s not that tech savvy, so I usually go in later and block or limit some of it. It’s a pain to fight the algorithms.

AquaTofana,

As a woman, I can never understand how other women can be Republican.

My mom was a Dem growing up, but then she fell down the religious rabbit hole after I left home and it was all downhill from there.

My little sister though? I have zero idea how she ended up Republican. It’s fucking bizarre. 🤷‍♀️

Phillaholic,

“The Leopards won’t eat my face”

ChillPill,
@ChillPill@lemmy.world avatar

Its the “Leopards eating people’s faces party”; not the " Leopards eating my face party". GOSH!

PS - is that a community here yet?

SailorMoss, (edited )

I agree with and get the point of the metaphor. But the leopard metaphor always seemed a bit tortured to me. There’s got to be a cleaner way to communicate that point.

ChillPill,
@ChillPill@lemmy.world avatar

You’d think so; and yet, so many people that metaphor is directed at don’t even realize…

Event_Horizon,

My thoughts. It never starts as full blown conservatism but reaches that point by a branching topic. My brother was always financially conservative, boot straps and all that, but over the last 12-18 months as the media he consumes moves further right he has become more socially conservative, because these people were inline with his thinking before so they must be right now of course.

I caught him going on about trans people corrupting his kids a couple of weeks ago. My brother might be a dick but he wouldn’t have been saying that 5-10 years ago.

Cyder,

In our case, we both grew up in a conservative state with conservative parents. But over time, I drifted away from it (and it drifted in crazy land). However she still hangs on. She’s come around on a few things. She often falls into the false equivalence mindset that both sides are just as bad. And whenever she starts to bring up any anti-vax or Joe Rogan BS, I try to stomp on that real quick. But I know she will always vote for anyone with an R by their name when it comes down to it.

stappern,

people in minorities are republican, the shit doesnt make sense.

stappern,

condolences…

RogueTyre,

Could probably use another account with a different profile and just switch whenever you use the pc

ChillPill,
@ChillPill@lemmy.world avatar

This is why I inist that each person have their own account on a shared pc.

NightOwl, in e-reader or tablet for reading academic paper

iPad with the apple pencil. I use PDF Expert which is free and has no ads to write and highlight PDF files. Has a wireless transfer feature on local networks too so you can move files back and forth between the iPad and non Apple devices.

SoftMaterial3294,

I second this, personally I use Zotero for highlighting so I can sync it with Obsidian.

@failsafe5000@lemmy.world avatar

Kindle Scribe is also a good option if you want to be able to write on PDFs, just need to use the Sent to Kindle feature.

blegh, in What's your favorite rabbit hole to go down?

I like deep dives into neon genesis evangelion. I doubt theres anything else I can get out of a show I’ve seen multiple times and watched who knows how many analysis videos on, but I still like listening to someone talk about it.

blegh,

I love everything about this

5Chex, in e-reader or tablet for reading academic paper

I’m currently in grad school and am reading a ton of PDFs. My iPad and Apple Pencil paired with the app LiquidText has been AMAZING! I actually subscribed to their pro plan so that my papers and annotations would sync between my devices.

I can’t stress enough how much use I get out of the combo and how productive it allows me to me reading, highlighting, and taking notes.

PeepinGoodArgs,

LiquidText is cool af but I hated the UI. Maybe it’s become better in the last few months.

5Chex,

I actually have some complaints too but I overlook them! And the customer service was super responsive when I needed them.

pavnilschanda, in e-reader or tablet for reading academic paper
@pavnilschanda@lemmy.world avatar

I’d say tablet with GoodNotes installed, since you can easily write on the pages. With e-readers you can’t immediately read your notes

stick2urgunz88, in How often do you brush your teeth?
@stick2urgunz88@lemmy.world avatar

Brush in the morning to keep your friends, brush at night to keep your teeth.

Ubettawerk, in What's your favorite rabbit hole to go down?

The concept of time and higher dimensions. I don’t understand the physics, but listening to others explain the concepts and spending time to think about it can keep me busy for hours

OceanSoap,

I always have such a hard time with the 4th dimension concept. (Not the time one though, the other one) Sometimes I grasp it for a bit and then minutes later I’ll be confused again.

momentary,

I really enjoyed the book “Einstein’s Dreams”. I similarly don’t understand the physics, but find some of the concepts so engaging.

lwuy9v5, in What exercises can I do to strengthen my willpower?

ADHD Brains are different - so some advice that works for non-ADHD brains may or may not work.

In general, being present and meditation (in whatever way that works for you, but, generally the practice of observing your thoughts as they go by but not reacting to them) are helpful for ‘strengthening’ your thought patterns. Becoming aware of things and building up that muscle is how you can have more of that willpower.

Habits can be very difficult to build, don’t get discouraged. Find things that work for you and ways to incentivize or motivate yourself.

www.youtube.com/@HowtoADHD/Here’s a great youtube channel

SubArcticTundra,
@SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml avatar

Oh yes I’ve come across her channel before. This is unrelated but have you found any good ways to deal with the ‘wall of awful’ that she describes in one of her videos?

Zozano,
@Zozano@aussie.zone avatar

I have ADHD and meditation has been a great help. I used the Waking Up app to learn to meditate, which removes all sorts of mysticism from the equation. The introductory course is great, it starts out simple enough but begins to become very interesting by about day 20 or so.

Amazing what 10 minutes of practice a day does.

whynotzoidberg, in I'm being harassed by mosquitoes, how do i kill them all?

I didn’t see it mentioned specifically — Mosquito Barrier is a black garlic-based spray that works super well. I’ve used it at high concentrations to handle a yard.

I also use Essentria IC3, another non-toxic-to-mammals spray. Works better than the Mosquito Barrier, I think.

Both are safe for people and pets, and I think both smell pretty decent to boot.

MiloSquirrel, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

For me if I ever look up warhammer 40k it immediately starts sending me losers like quartering or other channels like him.

Like, bo youtube, I don’t want to hear about how feminism and “wokes” are ruining warhammer. I also don’t want to be sent Sargon of Carl videos. Uhg. Lmao

Poggers, in What exercises can I do to strengthen my willpower?

I always get myself to do things I don’t want to by thinking “Future-me is going to be much happier when he finds that present-me did this already.”

Helps me find the motivation to exercise, make myself a good cup of coffee instead of a kcup, do the dishes after dinner, lots of things. And past me is such a bro, saved me from present-me having to do those things.

SubArcticTundra,
@SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml avatar

I’ve tried this before but it hasn’t worked for me so far unfortunately :-/ I thunk it’s because my brain sees tomorrow-me to be a different and detached person…

blegh, in People who work in food service or customer service: What’s the dumbest thing a customer ever insisted was “the law” or “illegal”?

We do not have to keep a register open just because there is a customer in the store. We’ve been making closing announcements for almost an hour and the store closed 20 minutes ago. You had more then enough time to buy whatever you wanted. Come back tomorrow.

Viking_Hippie,

People not knowing the difference between a cash register and a voting booth kinda makes most election results of the past few decades make a lot more sense though 🤔

some_guy,

Had a similar thing when our internet and phones went out in a retail store. We processed cash transactions for as long as we could before closing a couple hours early. Asshole stuck his foot in the door when the manager was trying to explain why he couldn’t come in, demanding that we let him shop. He was clearly drunk, to boot. Ugh.

TheGiantKorean, in What exercises can I do to strengthen my willpower?
@TheGiantKorean@lemmy.world avatar

The Science of Self Control is an excellent book about willpower and, well, self control. It goes into the science of it and how to use that to your advantage.

One thing I do is to reduce friction. You are more likely to do something if you make whatever it is easier to do. Conversely, if you want to stop doing something, increase friction (make it harder to do). Two examples:

You want to go to the gym in the mornings? Go to bed a bit earlier, get everything ready the night before, and maybe even sleep in your gym clothes.

Your want to stop eating cookies? Put them somewhere you’re less likely to walk past them or see them.

In your case, maybe try removing things that are distractions, e.g. put your phone on the other side of the room.

SubArcticTundra,
@SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml avatar

Sleeping in my gym clothes sounds like a radicaly effective move. Especially as it physocally connects evening me to tomorrow me, which I otherwise struggle to mentaly do…

jandar_fett,

When I was super down in different times of my life, I would sleep in my work clothes that way I would wake up and be on time for work. So yeah… this can be pretty effective.

jbrains, in What are the most appropriate responses to some very uncomfortable and awkward questions?

“Is it that you can’t have children?”

Reply that never fails: “What was your intention when you asked that question?”
