Everyone on the entire planet was impacted by the Great Recession.

Barbacamanitu, in People from the "hotter" regions, how do you deal with the heat?

I do construction work in Alabama. I basically bitch and complain all summer long and hate every second of it. There’s no relief unless you’re in the AC. I’ve been thinking of ordering a liquid cooled vest actually. They look weird but I’ll try anything. The humidity here is killer. Sweating doesn’t help like it does in dry climates. Every time I walk outside my body shuts down and I have literally no energy. I think i had a heat stroke last summer.

If someone above me tells me to go work outside all day and doesn’t offer me a substantial amount of money, I tell them to go fuck themselves. It isn’t worth it.

Hawk,

As a European, what is this AC you’re talking about.

Houses in Europe usually don’t have AC, but more and more people are getting one now.

kale,

In the American southeast, especially in a river Delta, you can’t live in a house long without AC or a dehumidifier. Mold will grow to toxic levels quickly in a house that’s left without electricity for very long in areas around me.

We have trouble opening our front door in the summer when the temp gets above 38 due to the humidity causing the wood door to swell. The heat index reached 47 last week due to the high humidity so there’s a ton of water in the air.

mycatiskai,

This is what killed around 700 people during one heat dome event in Canada a few years back. So much humidity in the air that sweating wasn’t helping cool people. You body can’t cool so you overheat and die. Not all people died from that but they were attributed to heat causes.

femaledog,

Those vests can be very effective. I use a coolshirt system in my track car, and I can be in the car indefinitely on a 100F day with no a/c, as long as the pump is recirculating ice water through my suit.

@ReCursing@kbin.social avatar

"The best time to plant a tree is fifty years ago. The second best time is right now" - essentially don't worry about what you could have done better, or what could have been, make now and the future as good as you can

and

"If you don't fall off occasionally, you're not trying hard enough" - originally told to me in the context of learning to windsurf (I still can't windsurf), but applicable in a lot of areas. This doesn't mean try to fall off, it means failure is a natural part of growth, not something to be shunned

ImplyingImplications, (edited ) in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

Does a poem count? Ozymandias has stuck with me forever.

I met a traveller from an antique land, Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand, Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed; And on the pedestal, these words appear: My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair! Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away."

CrabAndBroom,

Fun facts time! There are actually two versions of Ozymandias, one written by Shelley and the other by his friend Horace Smith. They had a competition to both write a poem with the same title and subject matter, which I think it’s fair to say Shelley won. But anyway, here is Smith’s version:

In Egypt’s sandy silence, all alone,

Stands a gigantic Leg, which far off throws

The only shadow that the Desert knows:—

“I am great OZYMANDIAS,” saith the stone,

“The King of Kings; this mighty City shows

The wonders of my hand.”— The City’s gone,—

Naught but the Leg remaining to disclose

The site of this forgotten Babylon.

We wonder — and some Hunter may express

Wonder like ours, when thro’ the wilderness

Where London stood, holding the Wolf in chace,

He meets some fragment huge, and stops to guess

What powerful but unrecorded race

Once dwelt in that annihilated place.

Had a similar thing when our internet and phones went out in a retail store. We processed cash transactions for as long as we could before closing a couple hours early. Asshole stuck his foot in the door when the manager was trying to explain why he couldn’t come in, demanding that we let him shop. He was clearly drunk, to boot. Ugh.

Stan,
@Stan@lemmywinks.com avatar

Oh how I miss the before times.

JackGreenEarth,

Facts are just objective statements, which can be either true or false, but whichever they are it is objective and not dependant on the observer.

I mean, it’s a semantic argument, and semantics is subjective, but that’s probably how the people who say ‘true fact’ are defining fact.

EatALime, in What's the benefit of using Kbin over Lemmy?
@EatALime@kbin.social avatar

Kbin does a better job of putting new posts in front of you even before you have subscribed to anything, so I think it is easier to find interesting things to read. Kbin is newer than Lemmy, so Lemmy had the advantage in familiarity for people. More people had heard of it when Reddit's API drama blew up and that gave Lemmy a distinct advantage when people picked a new platform. Kbin also has some annoyances like not being able to collapse comments and vote buttons being at the top instead of the bottom of posts and comments. If someone has written a lengthy comment, I want to read through the whole thing before I decide how to vote and I don't want to scroll back up to get to a vote button. To reply to a post you also have to scroll through the comment section. In some cases it's good to see if someone else has already said what you are going to say, but in other cases if someone is looking for personal stories, you don't necessarily need to read everyone else's story before submitting your own.

Personally I have this kbin account and a lemmy account as well. My Lemmy server seems to go down more often and the default sort always shows the same days old pinned posts from my server admin that I can't seem to hide after reading. On Reddit, I didn't have to switch sort to see newer stuff so Lemmy comes across as pretty stale sometimes even though there is a fair amount of posting going on.

maegul,
@maegul@lemmy.ml avatar

On lemmy the default is Active, which basically boosts any post that still has some recent chatter going on but is otherwise “stale”. In the settings though you can change the default sort. I’ve gone with Hot, which is I think the default sort on kbin too.

Can you change the default sort on kbin? I could work how to.

unknowing8343,

But Hot is broken in Lemmy, it shows old stuff like it’s hot. The system is broken, but I think there is a PR on the way.

maegul,
@maegul@lemmy.ml avatar

Hmmm … it seems fine to me. I’d heard it was broken before though.

In what way is it broken?

kamiheku,

Like the parent said, it surfaces old (as in years old) posts as “hot”. Not sure if that’s the case still, but I have definitely noticed it before.

maegul,
@maegul@lemmy.ml avatar

Ah … right … yea I’ve seen that happen occasionally … I had actually presumed that something had been changed with that post, perhaps by an admin or something cleaning stuff up, and that triggered a new timestamp for the post.

Maybe still a bug. I’ll keep track now of when it happens as it might help sort it out.

But still, that’s rarely the case for me. Just went down a fair way in my feed now and there wasn’t a single occurrence of it. Could it be particular communities causing it, maybe from instances on older software?

Otherwise though, Hot seems to do what I’d want. Combine with a bit of New or Top for an appropriate time window and I’m all good.

For comments, Hot/New/Top all do what I’d want too.

SeeJayEmm, (edited )
@SeeJayEmm@lemmy.procrastinati.org avatar

It’s still a bug. My server is at 0.18.2 and I regularly see old posts if I sort by Hot.

maegul,
@maegul@lemmy.ml avatar

Yep, that looks bad (obviously). I just went to the science community, sorted by Hot, and yea similar things appear towards the bottom of the feed.

Seems like the sort of thing that would be a minor and fixable bug. I don’t have time to chase down github issues right now, but I’ll try checking older communities to spot these occurrences. Naively I’d guess something like dates or vote-scored being truncated badly or something.

Thanks!!

maegul,
@maegul@lemmy.ml avatar

OK, I couldn’t help myself, and checked GItHub. Seems the issue may have been fixed hours ago. Don’t know when the new version will ship though.

Seems the issue may been to do with the process that updates the ranks of posts not being able to catch up to older posts, and so they show up with out of date ranks/scores. That process has been optimised, apparently, and should have no problem keeping up with all of the posts.

github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/3617

TheHalc, (edited )

I’ve heard that the “hot surfacing old posts” bug is more prevalent on instances that haven’t restarted for a while. It still shouldn’t happen, but I don’t think it’s universal.

quortez,
@quortez@kbin.social avatar

I would be happier with KeePass if the Android situation wasn't so bad. The most reliable app still uses UI elements from goddamn Froyo and the more sleek, modern, auto fill aware app can't deal with cloud sync to save its life. I hate it here.

x2XS2L0U,

I use KeepassDX on Android and it feels alright

quortez,
@quortez@kbin.social avatar

KeepassDX is the modern one I'm referring to. Because of the whole Android 11 SAF/scoped storage issue, syncing to databases and clouds that use DocumentsUI (the special folders you see when your Files manager window opens) fails all the time. I've repeatedly lost data due to KDX not properly saving or syncing, causing file conflicts and the passwords I literally just saved to vanish the next time I unlock the database.

The developer's response is that it's everyone else's fault that their apps' SAF implementation is bad, not KDX.

I absolutely cannot recommend using it.

x2XS2L0U,

I use it all the time and sync it between devices without problems…

Schooner,

What are you using for sync? I use Nextcloud and haven’t had any sync issues.

quortez,
@quortez@kbin.social avatar

I've had it fail with most SAF locations I tried after Android 11, especially pCloud. After the database locks and KDX leaves the RAM, it often cannot find the database it literally just saved, and will often just generate a merge conflict to the location it attempted to save. As a result, after you unlock once, it can no longer unlock the database and you have to bring up DocumentsUI again.

Schooner,

You know, I did have this problem like a year ago. Except, it was a problem with saving the database. I don’t know what happened but haven’t faced it in a long time now.

bricks, in should we be worried about powers-moderators/users?

For me personally, I never saw too many powermod-driven issues on Reddit (not that they didn’t occur, just that I didn’t experience them in the communities in which I participated).

One solution was to create a fork; lots of “r/actual___” or “r/true___” communities were born this way. To Little8Lost’s point, I think this will be even easier on Lemmy.

Serinus,

I’ve been permanently banned from the League of Legends subreddit for saying a team that had caught Covid wouldn’t die because they’re young and vaccinated. In a post about them having caught Covid. And in response to someone calling it a fatal disease (which it can be for some, but really isn’t if you’re 20, vaccinated, and otherwise healthy).

Gormadt,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Though dying may be lower risk for them people could still feel long standing effects from it. Though those are also less likely given they were vaccinated.

Statistics can be a bitch.

Serinus,

I looked up my exact quote, which isn’t perfect, but a permanent ban seems kind of crazy.

It’s not really lethal if you’re vaccinated, especially if you’re young.

I wouldn’t downplay long Covid. And if I had to do it again, I’d change some things. But saying that once in an appropriate thread seems pretty innocuous to me.

A lot of those community forks on Reddit were more related to the original communities growing too fast and then losing the original feeling than to powermods too (not all though).
