imaqtpie, in Whaf do you think of hosting an AMA with John Oliver to make Lemmy/kbin officially a viable Reddit replacement?
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

I like the idea but we are not ready at all for something like that. It'd be crazy to blow our load too early and draw a bunch of media attention here only for people to come here and find it unusable. If redditors are struggling this much to migrate, the general public has no chance.

See where we are at in 3-6 months and reassess.

Makes more sense. Gotta mitigate the risk of ruining the UX of the site and the community. This is a good idea in general, though.

pingveno,

I can remember all too well how it went for the r/antiwork mod who was interviewed by Fox. Anything Lemmy does needs to be very deliberately planned by people who know what to say and not to say.

toDie4,

Any chance of a TLDR of this interview?

imaqtpie,

The interview itself is the best TLDR. It's 3 minutes 24 seconds of highly concentrated cringe.

Here it is.

TLDR: dog walker got walked all over on live TV, sub then pretty much died afaik.

SevFTW,

Bit of a longer TLDR including context, I'll call it a TLDDD (too long, didn't deep dive):

Doreen was a moderator of /r/antiwork, she went on Fox News to present the subreddit and why it was so interesting to so many. This wasn't agreed upon by the community or the other moderators.

Fox immediately tried to frame it as people just sucking off the teat of "corporate america" and not wanting to work. In reaction to this, Doreen failed to actually make any arguments that a Fox News viewer would understand and even played directly into the propagandist's hands by using out of context philosophies like "laziness is a virtue" and saying that she worked as a dog walker.

On top of this, Doreen was incredibly unpresentable in the video and looked like your average, basement-dwelling netizen, sitting in a dimly lit room with a 2010s webcam. For the right-wingers at fox, she was the perfect image of what they imagine leftists to be like:

  • Trans
  • Autistic
  • Socialist
  • Unkempt
  • No "real" job (dog walker)

Here's a screenshot from the interview to give you an idea of what I mean by unkempt and unpresentable

SilentStorms,
@SilentStorms@lemmy.fmhy.ml avatar

I love Lemmy, but I feel like people are overestimating the ability of the platform. Stability and usability issues aside, there's the question of why would John Oliver come here? We don't have any history of celebrity AMAs, and highest estimates of our userbase puts us at maybe 1% of reddit, or 1 million users. For comparison's sake Ashens has 1.5 million subscribers on YouTube, do you think he could suddenly decide to do interviews and have the pull to get someone like John Oliver?

I think reaching out to Christian Selig or Louis Rossmann as other commenters suggested is more realistic, and would probably be a better experience for everyone involved.

Pmmeyourtoaster, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

The Lemmy apps are fine, but I’ve been disappointed in the quality of Lemmy posts and discussion. It’s too many memes, not enough good quality thoughts, discussion, content, community. It’s unfortunate. Wanted this to be the place I die.

sjatar,
@sjatar@sjatar.net avatar

Had the same issue so I removed most meme communities ^^ It’s just to easy to post them, they rank high on the filters as well

zdrvr,

Make two accounts on different instances. One for Memes one for discussion and just switch back and forth depending on what you are in the mood for.

Mereo, (edited )

Block the communities you don’t want to see in your profile settings. That way, you’ll see more meaningful posts. That’s what I did, I blocked all memes communities.

eric5949,

I don’t care so much about the memes, but the moderation on the meme subs is severely lacking. I’ve seen enough shit and dicks in the last 3 days I just temporarily blocked the instance the accounts were coming from until they figure out their shit.

Thorny_Thicket,

Agreed. And not just memes but quite shitty ones especially recently. Filling the front page with beans is worse than not posting at all

ShoePaste,
@ShoePaste@lemmy.ml avatar

I totally agree, it is getting better though. I’m trying to keep in mind that it’s only been a couple weeks. new communities take time to grow. i think a big issue with lemmy is there’s so many options so there’s competition between communities for content but there just aren’t enough users to go around. it’ll get there though. one thing i do like though is that i’ve been getting more quality engagement on posts and comments i make. i’m not feeling attacked by replies or seeing pointless comments like “this!”, ya know?

echoplex21,

What I did was unsubscribe from the meme communities. When I want a laugh I’ll go on “Global” and see them. Switch to subscribed to see better discussion.

phoukas,

I had a similar experience and just started blocking all the meme instances. Much better so far!

Venutianxspring,

Just block the meme communities and it makes this place a much more engaging site. There’s obviously not the same level as reddit yet, but with time it will get there.

babyphatman,

You can do the opposite too… Subscribe to the communities you like, and have that be your front-page. Then browse all when you’re feeling freaky!

Venutianxspring,

That’s what I do, but they were mentioning that they wanted to browse all, but the memes were ruining it for them. I’m usually on all so I can keep an eye out for new communities to join

dingus,

The problem is I like memes…I just don’t want to ONLY see memes. It’s just that Lemmy’s sorting algorithm is not as robust as Reddit. With Reddit my subscription feed would show me all of my communities, even if there was a large difference in size of them. My small communities still showed up in my subscriptions feed because Reddit had a more balanced algorithm. With Lemmy, the most popular communities flood out all the others. If the devs made the sorting work better we could have a more balanced experience.

xapr,

Good point. I think the sorting algorithms should be the number one priority for Lemmy devs at the moment.

RogueTyre,

Seems quite the opposite for me. Every 1 in 3 posts are either discussion or news reports.

Edit: actually it looks more like every other post with sometime 6 or 7 continuous ones without a meme

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve found that the trick is not to actually sub to meme communities, even if you want to see them. That way you can browse your subscribed feed for all the discussion on the topics you want, but then you can switch over to All > Top Day or whatever and still end up seeing most of the memes in there because they’re so popular.

tj111,

Yeah this is what I do. My subscribed feed is all news and discussion (and good discussion at that!), and then I go to All to see the memes. I first I subscribed to a meme community or two and it dominated my feed.

somedaysoon,
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

I figured that out too, I usually start off with my subscribed feed for interesting discussion and news articles (but you have to sub to the right sublems), then I might hop over to the all feed for memes and random pr0n and anything that maybe I missed or new popular communities. Then I jump over to another account on a smaller regional instance and hit the local feed there. I get plenty of interesting discussion and articles… and I think it is way better than reddit has been in the last 10 years. It reminds me of reddit when I joined 15+ years ago. So I’ve had the direct opposite experience as @Pmmeyourtoaster , the discussions here have been exponentially better than reddit has been for a long, long time now.

I will say that for like the first day or two I spent a good amount of time searching out and subbing to different sublems. I also used multiple different tools to find them. Two of the main ones being the built in Reddit Migration tool in Voyager, another being sub.rehab

dingus,

Yeah I think this is ultimately what I’m going to have to do. A bit annoying but oh well!

mavedustaine,

It’s kinda hitting the early 2010s 9gag nostalgia for me right now with all the shitty memes.

Lemjukes, in Do actors all need to agree to casually smoke for some roles?

Theatre Worker Here:

Most prop masters I’ve worked with use either this brand or something very similar. From that page the ingredients listed are: Marshmallow Leaves, Red Clover Flowers, Rose Petals, Fruit Juices, Honey. You can also buy packs that are designed to look like real brands(yellow american spirits, the famous “Marlboro Red”, and white for marb lights.)

Fake cigarettes have been pretty common props for a while now. Obviously there used to be a lot more actual tobacco use on sets but nowadays, especially with a lot of municipalities outlawing tobacco smoking indoors in public spaces, its almost always all fake/herbal. There are also nicotine free vaporizers that are styled to look like real cigarettes.

tuto193, in What's the benefit of using Kbin over Lemmy?

Apart from what has already been said (politics, basic UI) there are a couple more things worth mentioning:

  • Kbin’s interface is muuuch more customizable than lemmy’s: browsing form a web browser (desktop or mobile) let’s you modify your viewing experience as much as any mobile app for lemmy (but lemmly itself doesn’t). From infinite scrolling vs pages to font sizes and such.
  • kbin allows for (mastodon-like) boosting of posts, which is like a super-upvote that lemmy just doesn’t have.
  • on kbin you can subscribe to mastodon users aka federate with mastodon. Something that lemmy also can’t.

Other than that only personal taste matters in the end, and both federate with eachother, so enjoy it from wherever you are.

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

There's also several contributors who are actively working on improving the settings and adding in new features. I've been proposing a few changes for the mobile UI, letting you change up the mobile layout but all of that things take time (and add complexity) so it's slow moving

elkaki,

Also the ability for users to block instances and domain like mastodon has, which is pretty cool.

Naminreb,

This is a big one. There were some contributions from either instances or bots on my feed I didn’t like that I just blocked, and my feed is fine now. No need to ask for defederation of the whole community when you can do it yourself.

bug,

You can block users/bots on Lemmy too

godless,
@godless@latte.isnot.coffee avatar

But not instances or servers, that's a much needed feature to de-porn my feed.

bug,
elkaki,

Yep, although it’s almost been a year since the request so I don’t know how high it’s priority wise.

Since the question was why people use Kbin that is a big one for now, at least for me although I have an account there I just prefer lemmy since Kbin seems to be too much on its infancy and also the fact that because it doesn’t have an open API as of now, there are (almost) no apps developed.

bug,

Given the massive uptake in the last month I’m hoping a lot of old issues are now being looked at!

BadWolf,

I’m still searching everywhere for the ability to block entire instances in kbin (on mobile). Can you please elaborate on how it is done? I only see magazine pages with the block option.

Naminreb,

If you click on the menu next to the Kbin logo, at the top there’s a clog and a triangle. The triangle is the federation one.

Kissaki,

I was confused what boosting is. Docs said it’s basically a repost/share.

So I think super like is misleading. Even if your super liking is the reason you share it, they’re two different things.

(I may not necessarily want to share/share-promote hat I super-like. What I share is curation too.)

harmonea,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

So I think super like is misleading

It's literally not. Over here, on top of the "repost to your profile under your boosts section" functionality it's intended to have, it also counts as 2x rep for the poster. It really, truly is also a "super-like."

Kissaki,

Key word also

harmonea,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

The presence or absence of that single word doesn't change the fact that nothing OP said was wrong eh ;P

Kissaki,

Nobody claimed what they said was wrong. The thesis is that it may be misleading (through omission of the second half of what it does).

harmonea,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

See, the problem here is that you're treating an off-the-cuff casual explanation as a "thesis." Please don't bring this absurd habit over here, where people have to feel compelled to cover absolutely every interpretation and hedge every outlier for fear of getting nitpicked to hell and back. Literally no one enjoyed that environment.

CthuluVoIP,

I think it’s reasonable to argue, “a super like that also shares the post is functionally different from just a super like.” It doesn’t seem nit-picky when discussing the reasons why someone might choose one service over another to want to be precise about the mechanics of one of those services, no?

Pipsqueaker, in People who work in food service or customer service: What’s the dumbest thing a customer ever insisted was “the law” or “illegal”?
@Pipsqueaker@lemmy.world avatar

At one point I worked for an electronics repair shop fixing mostly phones, laptops, and game consoles. We actually had a great manager and we all just enjoyed fixing things, so we really weren’t out to rip people off like they usually came in thinking. Our store policy was even if we didn’t fix it, we didn’t charge you, and we stood by it.

One day a lady drops off her laptop with a cracked screen. Part of the screen was still working, but the majority was non functional and would surely worsen over time. We diagnose the laptop and give the customer a quote and she agrees to the repair. I let her know that once we start the repair, the previous screen will be destroyed during the removal process since it has no more integrity from being broken, she’s fine with that. We get the part in a few days later and I start the repair. At this point the woman’s husband calls - literally while I have the cracked screen half out of the laptop - and says stop the repair and return it how it was. We were like, we’re happy to give the laptop back, but unfortunately we’ve already started the repair and while removing the old screen it broke more so it would end up being returned in a worse condition.

This fucking guy screamed at me over the phone about how what we were doing was illegal, how we never got proper authorization blah blah. We offered to even do the repair at cost, but no that wasn’t good enough. When the husband and wife finally came into the store to pick up the laptop, he left screeching about how he was going to sue us. Unsurprisingly we never heard from him again.

closedmouthsdonteat,

One thing I learned from working in customer service is the amount of people that have a lawyer on retainer. Better be careful!

Voroxpete,

We developed a very effective strategy for this at a furniture store I used to work at; the moment the customer makes any suggestion of legal action, all our employees were trained to immediately say “I understand. Have a good day” and end the conversation on the spot. The unhappy customer immediately tries to press the issue, because what they want is for us to magically teleport a couch here from China or whatever, and at that point the employee says “I’m sorry but as you’ve notified us that this issue is now the subject of a pending legal action any further communication will have to go though our legal team.”

Repeating this a couple more times would inevitably lead to the customer admitting that they were bluffing.

nailbar,

I’d hate to work directly with customers, but pulling the rug from under idiots sound really satisfying.

Dubious_Fart,

This is my favorite thing to do.

Second lawyer is mentioned, shut down all communication and offer only “Due to your pending litigation, Please direct all correspondence to our lawyers as we are not authorized to discuss legal matters.”

luthis, in What do you use Vaseline for?

YES. Tiny cuts.

You know when you get a paper cut or similar, (not a scratch, a clean cut) and it stings and is really irritating, but it’s not deep enough to bleed much if at all?

Whack some vaseline on it. You block the air from your nerves and get instant relief.

Also use it sometimes to prevent chafing, like before a long bike ride.

basketsandhoes,

I’m pretty sure that most of what Neosporin is is Vaseline… And it makes sense. It’s basically Vaseline with a mild antibiotic.

Vaseline is awesome for preventing scars too: when the wound is still open, use Neosporin, but after it closes up a bit and is just healing, switch to Vaseline and just keep it in Vaseline until it’s totally gone.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petroleum_jelly

Native Americans discovered the use of petroleum jelly for protecting and healing skin.[4] Sophisticated oil pits had been built as early as 1415–1450 in Western Pennsylvania.[5] In 1859, workers operating the United States’s first oil rigs noticed a paraffin-like material forming on rigs in the course of investigating malfunctions. Believing the substance hastened healing, the workers used the jelly on cuts and burns.

lvxferre, in What is a beautiful concept or idea that continues to blow your mind?
@lvxferre@lemmy.ml avatar

Evolution as a concept; not just biological. The fact that you can explain the rise of complex systems with just three things - inheritance, mutation, selection. It’s so simple, yet so powerful.

Perhaps not surprisingly it’s directly tied to what OP is talking about cellular automata.

dipbeneaththelasers,

There's something interesting in here about the persistence of legacy systems that I can't quite put my finger on. Rest assured I will be consumed by the thought for the remainder of the day.

lvxferre,
@lvxferre@lemmy.ml avatar

There are plenty things that we could talk about legacy systems from an evolutionary approach. It’s specially fun when you notice similarities between software and other (yup!) evolutionary systems.

For example. In Biology you’ll often see messy biological genetic pools, full of clearly sub-optimal alleles for a given environment, decreasing in frequency over time but never fully disappearing. They’re a lot like machines running Windows XP in 2023, it’s just that the selective pressure towards more modern Windows versions was never harsh enough to get rid of them completely.

Or leftovers in languages that work, but they don’t make synchronic sense when you look at other features of the language. Stuff like gender/case in English pronouns, Portuguese proclisis (SOV leftover from Latin in a SVO language), or Italian irregular plurals (leftovers of Latin defunct neuter gender). It’s like modern sites that still need animated .GIF support, even if .WEBM would be more consistent with the modern internet.

treadful,
@treadful@lemmy.zip avatar

DNA still blows my mind. Some weird simple molecules that just happen to like to link together have become the encoding of how complex biological systems are constructed. Then mash two separate sets of DNA together, add a little happenstance, and you have another new being from those three things you mentioned.
