reddig33, in Do actors all need to agree to casually smoke for some roles?

It’s usually what’s called a “lettuce cigarette”. No tobacco in it.

news18.com/…/what-do-actors-actually-smoke-in-mov…

Brody,
@Brody@programming.dev avatar

Oh, that’s really neat! Prop cigarettes that look and burn like the genuine article, but just have herbs stuffed in it! Thanks!

UntouchedWagons,
@UntouchedWagons@lemmy.ca avatar

I prefer the balsamic and oregano flavour myself.

intensely_human,

So you still have to take smoke into your lungs, but it’s not forcing a tobacco craving to start.

calvinklein97,
@calvinklein97@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I don’t even think it’s going into the lungs especially with non smokers. If you try to inhale smoke as a non smoker you’ll most likely cough your lungs out. I assume they suck the smoke into their cheeks and blow it out from there.

AntY,

You can just keep the smoke in your mouth, no need to inhale it if it’s just for show.

EeeDawg101,

It looks kind of dumb though if I’m being honest. You can easily tell if someone didn’t inhale and instead just kept it in their mouth. Doesn’t look as complete. For acting, I’d consider this an issue.

operator,
@operator@kbin.social avatar

Agree. I can always tell if an actor is inhaling or puffing. And (I wish everyone the best in health) this looks just weird.

Atiran,

Almost everything looks dumb on tv if you know what to look for. Almost everything related to guns, computers, or driving looks ridiculous and fake. It doesn’t stop them from doing it, nor does it stop people from enjoying the entertainment.

CosmicApe,
@CosmicApe@kbin.social avatar

After reading about how Tarantino actually strangled Kruger for Inglorious Basterds, I can't help but notice how fake it looks in other films.

iNeedScissors67,
@iNeedScissors67@kbin.social avatar

I still remember watching the OC back in high school and seeing them play a Playstation game with an Xbox controller. I think about it sometimes.

EeeDawg101,

That is a fair point.

jscummy,

No idea what you’re talking about, I just picked up a new Charger with the F&F package (25 speed manual, factory installed 5000 shot of nitrous) and it seems perfectly realistic

acunasdaddy,

Cool to know. But that website you liked to is cancer. I’ve never seen so many obnoxious ads covering up the text lol

NABDad,

Well, if the fake cigarettes aren’t going to give you cancer, the website needs to pick up the slack!

Curious_Canid, in What password manager do you recommend?
@Curious_Canid@lemmy.ca avatar

I’ve been using KeePass since the dawn of time. There are now other good options too, but I haven’t seen any compelling reason to switch. It does everything I need both securely and well.

mvirts, in Do actors all need to agree to casually smoke for some roles?

I’ve read that they’re almost all fake… But I really have no idea 😅

gamer, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

Yes! I love it. It’s almost a meditative experience for me, kind of like when you’re in the shower alone with your thoughts. Also, since I’ve been regularly working out for a couple of years now, I’m at a point where if I don’t work out, then I start feeling like shit.

Is there anything the rest of us can do to cultivate such a mindset?

Idk, but I definitely did not like it at the start. I just sucked it up and pushed through, making sure I did it on a regular basis. Eventually, it stopped feeling like a chore and started feeling like a part of my routine, like brushing my teeth in the morning or showering in the evening.

Ktheone, in I'm being harassed by mosquitoes, how do i kill them all?

I just use a electric racquet

perishthethought, in What can a senior desktop support tech do who is burned out?

Hey person, I was in tech support for about 6 different companies, over 8 years. I left that to become a consultant. Best move, for me. It’s a lot like TS but you earn more and make money for the company, instead of being a cost center.

I taught myself some coding before I got my first job. JS and web technologies in my case. If you’ve been successful in TS for years, you could do this next.

donut4ever, in What password manager do you recommend?

You’ve just described bitwarden.

steal_your_face,
@steal_your_face@lemmy.ml avatar

I use the managed version of Bitwarden and I like it a lot compared to others.

doppelgangmember,

Bitwarden 100%

xtremeownage, in What password manager do you recommend?

Vault warden. (Implements bitwarden).

Works with bitwarden apps / browser plugins. Locally hosted. Rust.

RotaryKeyboard, in What can a senior desktop support tech do who is burned out?

This happened to me in my mid-thirties. I tried a couple pivots. One was to web development, which I found didn’t really help the burnout. So I pivoted again to project management. Project management doesn’t pay as well, but the hours and workload are far easier to deal with. It’s also a lot more accepting of older workers than IT is. Find yourself a project management position in IT somewhere. If you can get one in information security you could build up some time in that sector and get the CISSP, which would open a lot of doors to great paying jobs.

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

I tried Project Management and did not succeed at it. I am thinking of the DevOps course of action. I am still relatively young at 46. I’ll try and make the pivot.

bouncingbollocks, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

It’s not fun, I do it cause it gives me euphoric feelings similar to opiates and it makes my brain shut up for a few hours. Plus I sleep like a champ after a good workout

donut4ever, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

You’ve probably watched the other side quite often, so YouTube is recommending this for ya to enrage you and keep you engaged. Just good old rage bating

vd1n,

The devils algorithm.

Brochetudo, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

I can’t see why you can’t see the difference. I’ve been swapping every few years from the lowest tier phone that’s recently come out and each change feels like night and day each and every time. Perhaps you should stop buying overpriced phones?

Kleysley,

Buying cheaper phones for the purpose of feeling the need to upgrade them sooner doesnt really make sende though, does it?

Brochetudo, (edited )

I have had three phones in the span of ten years. All of them were gifted to me via the line provider. I don’t know what you are talking about, mate,

azuth,

Well, there are some arguments pro buying cheaper phones.

  1. You have the option to upgrade, you are not obliged. Even if you finance the more expensive phone you are still committed for more. You have more options.
  2. Batteries do naturally degrade over time. No matter how expensive or good your phone is.
  3. Accidents happen some will not be covered by warranty but I also do not see more expensive phones having more than 2 years warranty which is the minimum.
  4. If you do chose to upgrade you have more phones, that means a backup or a free phone for a member of your family.
Brahm1nmam,

Point 4 is more important than some may think, you can dial 911 without an active SIM. For this reason alone I have old phones in all my gloveboxes.

Plus a couple years ago my folks were floating the river and their dry bag somehow stopped being I dry bag, I don’t remember the story cause I wasn’t there. But, when they got home, I was able to set them up with passable phones while the ones they ordered online came in the mail.

Kleysley,

Well these are some really good points! I didnt think about batteries degrading but as far as I know, the more expensive phones tend to have larger batteries which will still get you through a day without charging…

Talking about accidents, I dont think the warranty replaces accidents where you are at fault (?). My phones (cheap or expensive) always had a case and tempered glass on them and I have yet to damage any of them but I get your point, expensive phones have to last for longer. I personally worry more about how long I am going to get security updates though…

  1. Completely agree with you on this one.
lagomorphlecture, in Does the reddit style format breed toxicity?

The only place on here that I’ve noticed downvotes is on comments that have been obviously social media shills (reddit or meta) or right wing type comments that are not the type of thing a community should support in my opinion. I’m not saying you’re doing either of those things and if you’re being downvoted in another context I don’t know why.

That said, downvotes shouldn’t really get you down. If you’ve said something awful then you deserve them and should reassess your outlook if you were unaware that your views or attitude were unpleasant. If you’re getting downvoted on a tech related thing then I don’t know what that’s all about but I would try not to worry about it too much because it doesn’t really affect your life, it’s just a fake internet down arrow.

Joe_0237,

Thank you, interestingly the thing that prompted me to ask was a tech joke, all (4) down-votes, I removed a jab at Apple and added a picture and the the responses was positive. The lesson must be one of these: That we have mostly strong apple fans here; jokes need a picture even if it does not add anything; or people look at the vote total to decide their mindset while reading and the first vote was down by bad luck. Or some combination of these.

lagomorphlecture,

Oooooh yeah people love their apple and I think you have your answer!

lntl, in What's a good way to prank your coworker?

That’s a big lunch bag if you can hide in it. Hope it keeps you safe from that angry lobster.
