cloud_herder, in What is Something Scientific that you just don't believe in at all?

Carbon capture 🥀

AngryCommieKender,

Carbon capture through technology? Agreed.

Carbon capture through hemp subsidies, or even just legalized weed would be doable, but we’d have to get global adoption.

NikkiDimes,

How would legalized weed help with carbon capture?

AngryCommieKender,

More plants in more places.

NikkiDimes,

Riiight…until you smoke the plants haha

AngryCommieKender,

Stores 80% of the carbon in the roots, so it would still trap a ton, no matter what we use the plant for

DreamlandLividity,

I mean, carbon capture works but if people are not willing to pay 5$ extra to prevent the CO2 from being emitted then they sure as hell are not going to pay 50$ to capture it. And capturing will almost always be more expensive than not producing it.

cloud_herder,

Okay yeah that’s true. I should have been cognizant that not being economically viable / efficient enough does not mean it’s impossible/I don’t believe it’s real. Definitely works.

hanekam,

EU carbon permits shot up from €20 and have been hovering under €100 a tonne post-COVID. ~€200 is when existing direct air capture starts to become competitive. If it can be scaled at that price, we might be closer than we think.

BreadstickNinja,

Yes, an absolute scam. Perfect for a demonstration project for a big polluter to point at to discourage legislation that would threaten their business model. Not useful for reducing carbon emissions at scale.

otp, (edited ) in Lottery winner

You’d be competing against multi-billionaires and huge corporations. It wouldn’t be enough, even though it’s a ridiculous amount of money for one person.

Changing the US would probably be impossible. Maybe changing your state would be possible. Changing your local community would be much more realistic.

Helping people get homes and food would likely help reduce crime.

Helping people get educations would help some people escape certain situations.

If you’re fixed on changing the US political situation and you think there’s a party that can change the situation, you can go with political donations. I believe whichever party spends the most money on their campaign is the one that wins more often than not.

Eheran,

Having multiple billions and dumping half a billion at once are two very different things.

otp,

The multi-billionaire would probably already know how to more efficiently use the money though, making their millions of political spending stretch much further.

ElBarto, (edited ) in So, who or what ruined Christmas this year?
@ElBarto@sh.itjust.works avatar

My mid 20s niece who lost an argument with my 2 year old great-nephew and spent the rest of Christmas shitty because people (me) kept making fun of her.

Gumus,

How’s that ruined? That’s epic!

ElBarto,
@ElBarto@sh.itjust.works avatar

Oh I enjoyed it, but she was being a bitch and it made her worse. I’m just glad my nephew called her it and not me lol he’s a cute little cheeky red head, he’s safe.

xkforce, in So, who or what ruined Christmas this year?

I have been coughing to the point that I throw up. Merry Christmas.

Rhynoplaz,

Uh oh! Santa’s coming UP the chimney!!!

JayObey711, (edited ) in So, who or what ruined Christmas this year?

My train was stopped in the middle of my ride home because of a terrorist attack, I may have missed the last ever chance to celebrate with my great-grandmother because my entire extended family got COVID, my hometown is desperately trying to prevent a huge flood and when i found out that i would be sad and lonely on christmas my muslim friends ghosted me :) So its a mix of some circumstances.

Lemminary,

We… May have to close this thread early, I think you won.

Please remember that it is okay to be sad - sometimes it's literally the only correct response to a situation:-).

hperrin, in What is an obscure piece of media or videogame that you think nobody else here has heard of?

Getbackers. It was an anime that I liked as a kid. I tried to rewatch it recently and realized how bad it is.

AquaTofana,

Bruh I loooooved the Getbackers as a teen! It actually got me through losing a beloved family pet because it took my mind off everything.

Ugh, what a nostalgia trip right there.

spittingimage, in If you could only listen to someone talk about one topic for the rest of your life, what would it be, and why?
@spittingimage@lemmy.world avatar

Don’t you put that evil on me. That sounds like a decent approximation of hell.

conciselyverbose,

Yeah, I'd rather be deaf.

One subject I could manage (psychology/AI if it has to be nonfiction or mysteries if fiction counts), but not one voice.

Does your vacuum talk a lot?

BleatingZombie, in Those who chose "never" in a "now or never" moment. How is it going for you?

“Now or never” is almost never a good deal. Avoid it like the plague

TheDoctorDonna,

When COVID hit I had a now or never moment and took the now. I took it a couple times actually. Got me a real career in a new province out of the deal so I figure I ended up for the better. Sometimes the choice is obvious like it was for me and you need to jump on that shit before you never get another chance.

RainfallSonata,

Same, though I didn’t realize it was now or never at the time. April 2020 I started the process of buying a house. Asked friends and family if I should wait to see what happened with Covid. They all said wait. I didn’t. Another couple of months later and I would still be renting. I’m so glad I jumped.

kent_eh,

Getting g a mortgage just before the rates started skyrocketing seems to have been a good choice.

Hopefully you are locked in for long enough that the rates can return to some sort of sane level before you need to renew.

numberfour002, in What is an obscure piece of media or videogame that you think nobody else here has heard of?

On the Internet, everything is fundamentally both obscure yet ubiquitous, or so it seems. But in real life, there are at least 2 things that seem to be obscure to the point that people don’t believe me when I mention it:

  1. A Super Nintendo game released in the US as Super Ninja Boy. It was a follow-up to (or maybe remake of) Little Ninja Brothers on the NES. I’ve even been told that I was confused and that I’m probably thinking of Legend of the Mystical Ninja.
  2. On the original Playstation, there used to be a series of demo discs that would have “hidden” features on them if you pressed the right button(s). One of those demo discs had the entire music video for Usher’s song “Pony” and other than randos on the internet and my friends/family who saw it with me, I’ve never met anybody that remembers it. If anybody here does remember that demo disc, I think there was another hidden music video on there, I vaguely remember a band, with various shots of the drummer wearing black athletic-type shorts with a white band around the leg but beyond that I really do not recall.
Krudler,

Bro I was at the thrift store and I saw a PlayStation demo disc for $2 and I laughed because I didn’t even think it should be there. But I will literally go back, take a picture, buy it and send it to you if it makes your Christmas better lol

numberfour002,

That’s awesome and very kind of you to offer. Not to be ungrateful, but I’m sure someone else would appreciate it far more than me. I don’t have a Playstation anymore and I don’t even have a CD/DVD drive on any device that would be able to run an emulator. Merry Christmas and thanks for being so thoughful!

Elephant0991, in What are your dental hygiene tips and hacks
@Elephant0991@lemmy.bleh.au avatar

Listerine seems to help remove plaque effectively. Since start using it in the middle of the night when I wake up, not getting regularly cleaned doesn’t seem to be a problem anymore. This is coupled with flossing and thorough brushing of course.

Ferrous,

Haven’t there been talks of a link between mouthwash and throat/mouth cancer?

Elephant0991,
@Elephant0991@lemmy.bleh.au avatar

There seem to be published scientific paper that some scientists disagreed. There are alcohol-free mouthwashes too.
