Dankry, (edited ) in Are there any people who were offended by Norm MacDonald's comedy? Was he controversial, or nah?
@Dankry@lemmy.world avatar

Don Ohlmeyer for one. He’s the NBC executive who had Norm fired as SNL’s Weekend Update anchor because he wouldn’t stop mocking Don’s friend, famous double murderer, O.J. Simpson.

LemmyKnowsBest,

Oh yeah I remember that now, Norm Macdonald was fired from Saturday night live “for not being funny,” and he found it odd when he was invited back a couple years later to give the opening monologue.

LordOfTheChia, (edited )

The worse thing about that whole ordeal was the hypocrisy.

stewie3128,

It was great when Ohlmeyer went on Colbert Report and got mocked for saying NBC was going to lose money on the Winter Olympics. Colbert did a fund drive to help, and presented him with a giant check for like $5.08

It’s also great that he’s been dead since 2017. Conan was right when he called him one of the silverback gorillas running TV.

captain_aggravated, in What is Something Scientific that you just don't believe in at all?
@captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works avatar

In my head, “dark matter” and “dark energy” are the names we’ve given to the limits of our understanding. At some point in the future the news is going to break that an Einstein or a Feynman or a Hawking will publish a paper titled “So we figured out what’s causing the thing we’ve been calling dark matter this whole time.”

brain_in_a_box,

That’s literally what dark energy and dark matter are though, place holder names for phenomena we don’t fully understand yet. I’m not sure how you weren’t aware of that.

Chetzemoka,

But that’s literally true and fully acknowledged by the physics and astronomy fields. It’s why those things received the names “dark.” Because currently we can’t see what’s causing those effects. And there are currently physicists and astronomers who spend their time researching these effects in hopes of publishing that exact “Hey! I figured out what it is” paper. Then we’ll praise that person, add their name to the pantheon and fail to acknowledge the hoards of other people who contributed to the foundational research that allowed them to finally figure it out.

Same as it ever was.

foggianism,

Yes, I completely agree. Dark matter and dark energy are supposed to make up over 90% of the universe, yet we failed to detect them yet? No way! Those are just fill-ins, because our formulas are obviously not working that great on a grander scale.

michaelmrose,

This suggests the question why do most of the highly educated people who have spent their lives studying the question think differently? Why is the universe obligated to be made of something easy to measure and understand?

foggianism,

The universe isn’t obligated to us for anything, but we want to understand it and be able to make predictions. Right now we seem not to be able to do that.

brain_in_a_box,

Other way around, we propose them becuse we do detect them.

foggianism,

Nope. Dark matter or dark energy have not been detected, as of yet.

brain_in_a_box,

What would count as detection to you?

foggianism,

I would count as detection if scientists would say “we detected it”.

brain_in_a_box,

Well scientists have definitely detected it, and said as much

Sync. Voyager was good too.

victorz,

Shame Sync has a subscription-based model now to get rid of ads.

maryjayjay,

Subscription is for cloud based features (Ultra). It’s a single payment to remove ads

victorz,

Oh shiz, you’re right. Still a bit of a heavy price compared to Boost.

Paradoxvoid,
@Paradoxvoid@aussie.zone avatar

Yeah that’s what made me jump ship to Boost - I sincerely doubt that even if I used Sync for ten years, the value of the ad impressions I give would be worth A$35. I can basically buy a huge number of high-quality games for that amount.

victorz,

You could buy a huge number of high quality games for A$35?

snowe, in People who have made and successfully kept their New Year's resolution, what was it and how did you stay motivated?
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

By not doing a New Year’s resolution. If you’re going to do something, start now, not in the new year. Leaving it to an arbitrary day when “everyone does something” just gives you an out when you don’t succeed. Just go and do it now. There’s literally no point in waiting and honestly a lot of reasons not to wait.

ryannathans,

Based and true

The real new years resolution is what you started doing last year

CaptKoala,

As a huge procrastinator, it’s this thought hitting me that gets me to go do stuff, nothing gets you moving like it.

@snowe@programming.dev avatar

I’m glad I could help (I think?). I just think it’s funny, because imagine your doctor told you to stop eating so much meat because it was making your blood pressure high. Would you wait months to do so or start immediately? New Year’s resolutions haven’t really made any sense to me at all, and I think that’s a good way of thinking of it.

    MahnaMahna, in So, who or what ruined Christmas this year?

    It’s not “ruined” but my 3 week old daughter has been particularly cranky today, she refuses to go to sleep despite multiple feeding sessions, diaper changes, and attempts at burping. I’m already tired because I took most of last night’s shifts, so I’m glad we’re not leaving the house. It’s a bit of a bummer because I usually love everything about Christmas (the music, the lights, the food, the presents) and we are pretty much missing all of that this year. I can’t wait to make up for it in future years though!

    ReiRose,

    The first few months are so hard, you’re doing great! You are sacrificing this Christmas, but for the next few years you’ll get all your joy and all hers. I got to see my 13 month old open presents for the first time today, and it was worth all those sleepless nights.

    (Also note she was way more interested in the boxes and wrapping paper than the gifts…) 😅

    nucleative,

    I have an 11 year old boy and this Christmas we had the talk about the reality of Santa Claus. He’d suspected for years. The last 7 Christmas seasons or so were filled with excitedly tearing into gifts with glee which, admittedly has been a joy and privilege to watch and be part of.

    This year I talked with him about how the concept of Santa is just a way adults can give gifts without any expectations in return, because the real joy is watching others experience that glee. So I worked with him in early December to carefully watch the people around him for things that might bring them joy to receive. On Christmas morning he was so excited to see others open his gifts!

    Now I’m cognizant that there may be fewer years ahead of us than behind us with him still in the house.

    Your Christmas seasons will never quite be the same again, but mostly in good ways.

    sbv,

    I’m cognizant that there may be fewer years ahead of us than behind us with him still in the house.

    I’m feeling that more and more. I love that my guys are getting more independent, and we’re having deeper conversations. But I know our time is limited. It’s bittersweet.

    Shadow, (edited ) in What are your dental hygiene tips and hacks
    @Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

    Get an electric toothbrush. Don’t push hard, just slowly move it and hold it gently against your teeth / gums in each spot.

    If you hate flossing like I do, a waterpik is helpful.

    Brush twice a day.

    Don’t rinse after brushing like you said.

    StopSpazzing,
    @StopSpazzing@lemmy.world avatar

    Waterpik is not a replacement for flossing, fyi

    Shadow,
    @Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

    No but it’s better than nothing.

    altima_neo,
    @altima_neo@lemmy.zip avatar

    Waterpik is nifty, but I found a solution that works well in conjunction with it, but without the frustration of flossing . Gum Proxabrush are little brushes that go between your teeth to scrub out the gunk. My hygienist was saying they work better than floss. I’ve really liked them.

    Zorg,
    @Zorg@lemmings.world avatar

    My teeth are so tight I can sometimes barely get floss down between them. A brush would have no chance of cleaning the whole sides of the teeth.

    surewhynotlem,

    You may already know, but Glide by oralb is great for tight teeth. It’s flatter and slippery. The only issue I’ve found is that it snaps more often.

    Zorg,
    @Zorg@lemmings.world avatar

    Yeah, I loved that floss! Right up until I found it’s so good because it’s coated in Teflon.

    surewhynotlem,

    Fuck. Thanks I guess?.. now I need new floss

    tarmac,

    What do you use instead?

    cheese_greater, (edited )

    Doesn’t the WaterPik sort of negate the don’t rinse thing, or are you saying less is more in terms of water getting in the way of remineralization and you net benefit from using that for flossing. I definitely prefer it over physical floss

    Use flosser first, THEN brush without rinsing. Got it 😁

    CuddlyCassowary,

    You can do the WaterPik before brushing and then don’t rinse after brushing.
