psion1369, in Is there an artist whose work you love but was a shitty person?

John Lennon was pure asshole. He abused his first wife, who he only married because his manager didn’t want one of these new starts to father and illegitimate child. And that child, he tormented and ignored. Second wife, second child, both wanted and given everything.

WeirdGoesPro,

Not saying he’s a saint, but isn’t an alternative interpretation that he was young, inexperienced, and had a bad relationship, then grew up, learned some things, and had a better relationship later? Julian Lennon was on Bill Maher’s podcast recently and described a reconciliation between him and his dad right before he died.

Again, not trying to excuse all his bad behavior in his first marriage, but I also don’t think that a failed relationship is enough evidence to judge a whole life by, especially one that was under extraordinary pressure.

sheilzy,

Iirc, while Beatles management did encourage Lennon and Cynthia Powell to get married, they were instructed to keep the marriage and child private for a
period of time. They were trying to lean into the “boy band” desirability, and they must have figured a married father isn’t someone young women feel comfortable pining over. Of course, Cynthia and Julian didn’t stay a secret forever though.

MajesticSloth,
@MajesticSloth@lemmy.world avatar

He himself admitted he was an abuser of people in his life. Both male and female. Sure, people see that as him atoning for those past abuses. But it is clear he wasn’t this nice person people think of when they think of his anti-war and peace stance in life.

dodgy_bagel, in What is Something Scientific that you just don't believe in at all?

Birth order effect on personality.

It smells like predetermined horoscope nonesense.

crackajack,

Pretty sure there is study that corroborates the claim. Being a middle child, the idea of us being black sheep seems to be true. Though the black sheep stereotype complements my personality anyway, as I have always been a maverick.

dodgy_bagel, (edited )

Which is why it’s scientific and I still don’t believe in it.

One of my fields of study is adjacent to psychology, and I’ve rubbed elbows with some of the people who have publishedsome of those studies.

My conversation with the lady had her analyzing my every mannerism as if it all stemmed back from my childhood.

Nonsense and tea leaves!

crackajack,

Oh yeah, I know that not all of human behaviour is directly caused by something. Even if there is broad explanation, we are all still humans that still deviate from programming.

cashews_best_nut, in What is the best modern song for a door bell?

Phone ringtones from Zedge app may give you some ideas. There’s loads of music snippets that have been ripped from songs that have just the right length.

My current ringtone is the famous riff from Du Hast by Rammstein.

My message notification is the bleeping from Ich Wil.

Check out Zedge or whatever the equivalent apple app would be.

jol,

TIL some people don’t have their phones permanently on mute.

ilmagico, in Why do people not understand that you can agree with one thing someone said or did while disagreeing with the majority of what they stand for?

That’s because you’re on the internet, and nuance doesn’t exist. It requires thinking, which is hard.

Note: I don’t know JP and don’t have an opinion on him (yet). I’m responding only to the question in the title.

I think it’s a little more nuanced than that…

u_tamtam,
@u_tamtam@programming.dev avatar

I mean, the internet was fine until the advent of global “engagement-driven social networks” that practically became filter bubbles optimizing for ads delivery, then echo chambers for political gain, down to self-sustained propaganda machines for geopolitical sabotage. Early internet felt like village-scale communities centered around a single purpose/interests where people came in the first place to contribute something or help each other. Trolls did exist but there was no tolerance for them because the absence of centralization meant they didn’t have to be accepted there in the first place.

satanmat, in Who in your opinion is the modern day equivalent to Mozart?

Ummm

Prince.

Music fell out of him. He accidentally walked by a bass and it exploded from the funk.

Talent for days. (See also RRHoF playing “while my guitar gently weeps”)

Second vote would be Trent Reznor or Danny Elfman

ElBarto,
@ElBarto@sh.itjust.works avatar

Plus the moment he made it rain during his Superbowl show whilst playing purple rain.

I don’t care what anyone says, it rained because of prince.

satanmat,

Don’t care if it is apocryphal but when it started raining, he said “make it rain harder. “

Yes. He did make it rain that day.

hondaguy97386, in What is an obscure piece of media or videogame that you think nobody else here has heard of?

The Illusion of Gaia for SNES. I don’t know anyone who has heard of it.

otp,

Wow. I watch YouTubers who talk about the SNES, and it gets brought up all the time in those circles!

RaineV1,

I had it as a kid. I remember really liking it.

Backspacecentury,

Rented Illusion of Gaia so many times!

degen,

My mind went straight to the SNES too, but with Chaos Seed, the feng shui dungeon building oddity. I have a feeling people might be familiar with SNESdrunk around here, though.

schmidtster,

I replay that game every couple of years, one of my all time favorites. My brother still had the cartridge.

Now I’m gonna need to play when I get back home, thanks stranger!

Gamers_Mate,

Interesting in Pal regions it is called Illusion of Time.
I also found a fan remake on itch.io

jjjalljs,

One of my cool older cousins was playing this one christmas when we went to his house! I was vaguely disappointed when we went back the next year and he was like “oh yeah that was fun but i beat it and don’t play it anymore.” Little kid brain assumed the game just went on for much longer than it does. Playing it together (ie: taking turns) is a fond childhood memory for me, though.

hakunawazo,

Yep, know about it. But I was more of a ‘Secret of Mana’ and ‘Secret of Evermore’ person myself.

EternalWarBear,

I think I might’ve seen a copy of that at a retro used game store near me here recently.

Nemo,

I still have the T-shirt that came with the box set!

It was a weird game, honestly.

I think the other two games in that series (Terranigma) didn’t get official English versions, but there are fanslations if you want to play them.

Odo,

All 3 games got official English translations. Soul Blazer and Gaia were released in the US and Europe, but Terranigma for whatever reason was only released in Europe. I’m so glad emulation came around and opened up access to so many region-locked games.

CodexArcanum,

Terranigma is one of my favorite SNES games! It is a truly awesome adventure and so underrated!

I played through a lot of fan translations and obscure games when I first discovered emulation. E.V.O Search for Eden is another weird, unique RPG from that era, which I highly recommend!

Zarxrax,

I don’t believe I played it, but I remember that box art. They probably had it on the shelves of my local blockbuster video. I think it might have also been a cover feature in Nintendo power.

hondaguy97386,

That’s how I played originally was renting it. The box art was awesome.

    Same. Guy gives me the creeps. As do far too many others from Jack Nicholson to James Franco (not sure why those came to mind first, and I was going to continue listing, but honestly there are just too many, some, like Russel Brand it was obvious way before any public allegations were made, so there are those as well, where we're just waiting for the other shoe to drop. There are also those who I can't stand seeing/hearing because they're bigots, so I really could be here all day).

    I'm not claiming any purity by the way, there are far too many to flat out avoid them all, but some simply make my skin crawl more than others, and I just don't need to consume something that makes me feel that way. ¯*(ツ)*/¯

    Varyk, in Who in your opinion is the modern day equivalent to Mozart?

    I don’t know anything about surfan Stevens, why him?

    jopepa,

    He has a huge discography, is a talented multi instrumentalist, and is very experimental with genre and song writing in general while still effectively connecting with a growing audience. I used to know only a handful of his songs and thought, good but meh. Out of curiosity about his broad appeal between people I wouldn’t expect much over lap from, I dove into his discography and it’s something really special.

    Varyk,

    Okay, very cool. Thanks, he sounds worth looking into

    jopepa,

    No problem, I had a lot of fun listening from his least popular album to most, just to see when it would click.

    NewNewAccount,

    Where did it click for you? What’s considered his most popular?

    jopepa,

    I think it might’ve been this one but it was a while back so I’ll keep looking and edit if I find something that looks more familiar. Greetings from Michigan got it’s antlers in me, after that I burned through the rest of the list pretty quickly and then it became a blur of shuffle for a few weeks.

    creamed_eels, in What is an obscure piece of media or videogame that you think nobody else here has heard of?

    When I was a kid I went to a Primus show and they were playing music before the acts came on. One was “Smoke On The Water” covered by Tom Jones and I’ve never been able to find it or even any information about it. I know it was this song and artist as I asked the engineer, it was a great rendition and I wish I could find a copy

    kattenluik,

    Have you tried contacting them?

    creamed_eels,

    Tom Jones? No, I didn’t even think of it tbh. I hadn’t thought of this song in a long time until right now lol

    Vaginal_blood_fart,

    It might be on In a Metal Mood: No More Mr. Nice Guy. Track 3 is smoke on the water. And if I recall correctly Tom Jones was on this album. But I can’t be sure he is singing smoke on the water

    creamed_eels,

    It’s not, but what a horrible/awesome album! Thanks for the tip!

    Cornelius_Wangenheim, in What is Something Scientific that you just don't believe in at all?

    The idea that SSRI antidepressants work by increasing serotonin levels. If that were the case, why don’t they start working immediately? Instead, most people don’t see positive effects for several weeks.

    OhNoMoreLemmy,

    I was listening to a sleep scientist the other day and they were saying that one thing we know is that depressed people have more rem sleep on average, and SSRIs decrease the amount of rem sleep.

    If it is something sleep based that goes some way to explaining why it takes time to have an effect. Building up or wiping out a sleep debt can’t happen instantaneously.

    GuyDudeman,
    @GuyDudeman@lemmy.world avatar

    That’s interesting… because I always thought that REM sleep was the most important part of sleep, and more was better.

    In fact, I read an article once that suggested that REM sleep was when our spinal fluid flushed all the waste material out of our brains at night (which leads to the types of dream that occur during REM sleep), which is also a process that prevents brains from being clogged with waste material.

    I always thought that our brains being filled with waste material was part of depression, and that flushing out that waste material would help our brains function more correctly.

    Sounds like the opposite - like, our depressed brains are depressed because they think too much?

    OhNoMoreLemmy,

    Characteristic sleep-EEG changes in patients with depression include disinhibition of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, changes of sleep continuity, and impaired non-REM sleep.

    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6386825/

    Yeah, I think we have multiple types of sleep because we need them, and if you’re getting too much rem sleep at the expense of other types it’s going to cause problems.

    GuyDudeman,
    @GuyDudeman@lemmy.world avatar

    Interesting!

    banneryear1868,

    They can’t work immediately because the body isn’t producing enough serotonin to have an immediate effect, nor would you want that. Over time serotonin reuptake is slowed and eventually this has a cognitive effect. That doesn’t help everyone but that doesn’t make them ineffective.

    skillissuer,
    @skillissuer@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

    Serotonin hypothesis never really held water. Congrats on guessing right, probably, we’ll only see in some years from now www.science.org/…/how-antidepressants-work-last

    ChexMax,

    Plus the idea that SSRIs work, period. They only work slightly better than placebo, and they count them as “working” as long as they help with a single symptom. So if they don’t help your depression at all, but they do help with your insomnia, they put that in the “it worked!” pile. That’s why suicide risk sometimes increases on SSRIs. They do nothing for your crippling depression except increase your motivation, so before you were depressed and couldn’t accomplish anything, and now you’re depressed, but also have the wherewithal to follow through on your suicide plan.

    dingus,

    I have been having some mental health issues, and I was reading about this the other day. I was going through wikipedia with the various types of antidepressants, and it seems that SSRIs are just barely better than placebo, or even in studies not even better than placebo.

    I know there are multiple classes of antidepressants out there. Are there any that do a better job, even if they are not as common?

    GnomeKat,
    @GnomeKat@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

    I duno about any that work, but if a dr offers you effexor tell them hell fucking no. Everyone I have talked to about it agrees its fucking absolutely awful. Worst drug I have ever taken.

    dingus,

    What sort of problems did you have with it?

    GnomeKat, (edited )
    @GnomeKat@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

    Effexor has some awful side effects. I have seen people complain about brain zaps but I didn’t get them. For me I kept getting this weird lagging feeling in my body, like my perception of my limbs was lagging behind where they were in this very weird feeling way. Its very hard to explain but it was very uncomfortable feeling, every movement of my head was accompanied with this weird feeling. After I quit the drug the issue persisted for months after, it was legit fucked I was scared it would never go away but eventually it did.

    Also effexor triggered multiple manic episodes where I was hearing voices and didn’t sleep for a week. Like legit psychosis. I haven’t had any episodes that bad before taking effexor and none since I quit it as well. I can honestly say it made my mental health issues infinitely worse, shit is a demon drug. TBH I don’t fuck with psych drugs anymore because of my experience with effexor.

    Corkyskog,
    @Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works avatar

    There’s different definitions of depression, for one.

    And “do a better job” is going to be defined by the individual.

    But there are SSRIs, SNRIs and SDRIs like Wellbutrin. They have vastly different side effects and play on different systems (serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine) many people find SNRIs to be more effective, but again it’s all the individual.

    banneryear1868, (edited ) in What is Something Scientific that you just don't believe in at all?

    I don’t believe scientific progress is analogous with human progress or can be used to “decode” morality, ie the science vs religion dichotomy I don’t believe in. I don’t think science or “reason” guides human societies for instance. This belief is a result of studying Hume and moral philosophy. I think science tells us what is but not what ought to be, and that gap is irreconcilable through science alone, yet it can inform our sense of right and wrong. I disagree with objective morality as well, so the popularization of this science=objective morality idea that Sam Harris has attempted I disagree with entirely. I’m much more aligned with Patricia Churchland’s ideas here, and her popularization she outlines in her book “Braintrust.” I don’t think, as some do, that measuring brain activity decodes human morality, because I don’t believe such a thing exists. I don’t believe human society is controlled and determined by rational actors, I have a more Darwinian and Maxian view on that. When people profess things like “politics should be scientific” I likely agree with their sentiment but I think “science” is not the reason why, and more of a distraction/lazy way to assert being morally right about something, which science can’t actually do because it requires an appeal to human notions of morality, which science cannot determine as it has no measure of which values we ought to hold.

    reddig33, (edited ) in I was just telling someone about how the loyalty plan for groceries was that you got the next letter's edition of the encyclopedia.

    Groceries were still doing this into the early ‘90s, but it wasn’t free anymore. It was just earning a discount on an encyclopedia volume every week.

    They also used to give away silverware sets a piece at a time. You could also get dishrags or drinking glasses in boxes of powdered detergent. And then there were S&H green stamps.

    We have similar freebies now, but it’s “join our loyalty points program and earn” or credit card points. Kohls cash, gas discounts, etc.

    Demonmariner,

    I got a complete set of dishes, settin for six, from grocery rewards as recently as the early 2000’s. It was from Safeway I think. Not long after that they did cookware, and I got a few pieces before they stopped the program.

    I eventually gave away the dishes, but still have the cookware. It’s pretty good stuff.

    bugieman,

    blazeknave,

    U2 sucks. I said it. Singer of my band in HS tried so hard to turn me… at least 3 mix tapes and I def found some less popular songs I liked. But I’m just not a fan. I change the station after a dramatic sigh when they come on. They don’t rock. I like that Batman twist me bang me something me song. Desire is fun. Sunday Bloody Sunday is emotionally tied to historical events, can’t sleep on it. Mysterious Ways is amazing and brings back positive feelings from those days (was it in a mixtape infomercial?). But besides the several songs I like, they suck… Shit… did I just talk myself out of hating them? Was I just an angsty little shit and South Park nailed the coffin?

    I like both Bono and Miley. I actually like both music and their personalities at least the projected personalities. I don’t feel like they are trying to hide anything and they seem to want the world good

    MeatsOfRage,

    Eh, I used to think like that, there was a time when it was popular to hate on U2. But really there are a lot of legitimate assholes out there who are actively making the world a worse place. His philanthropy is aggressive and attention seeking but the receipts are there and I’d much rather have someone channel all this energy and platform into pro-human rights than anti which is becoming increasingly popular these days.

    RememberTheApollo_,

    I like U2, but obviously people have different opinions. However, when some dude worth 3/4 billion (no idea what the rest of the members are worth) asks an audience full of people who just paid an absurd ticket price propping up his hundreds of millions to wave their cellphone lights in the air and tells them how rich they are and how they give more money to whatever causes it really is tone deaf. I’m all for supporting a good cause, but that’s just stupid.
