Crashumbc, in You have a magic pill, which de-ages you by 20 years. You can take it once in your life only, so long as you are at least 20. What age — past, current or future — do you reckon is best to take it?

“de-ages” I assume means genetically? You don’t get to go back in time.

Today then.

HonoraryMancunian,

Eh, it’s hypothetical, interpret it how you like!

epyon22, (edited ) in Is it normal for your BP to rise after quitting

I am not a doctor and this is not medical advice.

Smoking -dilates- constricts your blood vessels and capillaries. Drinking thins your blood. After quitting your body is going to over compensate the other way for a little while.

Congratulations on quitting.

Edit: correction for constricts rather than dilation

ink,

Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor, which elevates blood pressure by causing your blood vessels to constrict.

Aux,

Is it though? There are no conclusive studies on the effects of nicotine isolated from smoking cigarettes.

Tippon, in You have a magic pill, which de-ages you by 20 years. You can take it once in your life only, so long as you are at least 20. What age — past, current or future — do you reckon is best to take it?

Lots of people are treating this like you would go back in time and get a do over, rather than being de-aged.

I’m assuming that de-aging would roll back any age related aches and pains, but not affect my memory, other than possibly making it better. It would give me more energy, so I’d be overweight and young instead of overweight and old :D

I’d take it at around my late 30s to early 40s to get back to my late teens to early 20s. My body was fully developed, so I wouldn’t have to go through puberty or have too many teenage hormones, and I’d have enough energy to get in shape again.

If it de-aged me by putting me back into my body from the time, then it would be when I was 42. 22 was when I was in the best shape of my life, and before I picked up a few long lasting injuries. I found out in my early 30s that I’ve got a chronic illness too, and it hit me hard.

I’d get the doctors and dentist to work on the health issues that I didn’t know about when I was young, and stop them from becoming serious, and generally get healthier.

Most importantly, I’d take my kid out and do all the things that we haven’t been able to do together :)

Dkarma,

Good point! I didn’t consider this. In this case I’d probably just start taking better care of my body now and wait to take it until the pain gets real bad or I find out I have cancer.

QubaXR, in Does AI-generated art posted on lemmy bother you?
@QubaXR@lemmy.world avatar

I’m fed up with it, as in: I can recognize AI generated images with ease, and they all look kinda same-y. I have nothing against people using ai or posting the content, but at the same time I think it’s simply bad art

Toneswirly,

Agreed. AI art is just not appealing at all

jwing, in You have a magic pill, which de-ages you by 20 years. You can take it once in your life only, so long as you are at least 20. What age — past, current or future — do you reckon is best to take it?

For your first 20-40 trip, you could stay childless and live it up, see the world.

Then, on your second 20-40 trip, you could have kids while still physically fit and able to keep up with them and have fun.

Bishma,
@Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

The problem with that is that (now that I’m in my 40s) I don’t like to be around kids for long periods of time, and have come to see anyone under ~25 as a kid. Would I be able to stand being around myself (or my new peers)?

Stovetop,

It would be weird to have kids with someone who is effectively 20 years younger than you, though.

You either go with someone physically the same age who is of a completely different generation from you, or you go with someone mentally your age who you may not be able to have kids with without risking a higher chance of congenital disorders.

Nemo, in You have a magic pill, which de-ages you by 20 years. You can take it once in your life only, so long as you are at least 20. What age — past, current or future — do you reckon is best to take it?

No earlier than 45. Otherwise you’re headed back into territory where your body and brain are still developing – fuck with that and you might not feel right in your own body.

HonoraryMancunian,

Good shout

otp,

Yeah, it’s gotta be in the late 40’s.

By then, you’ve got all the aches and pains, and you’ll know better to take care of things like your posture! Lol

forty2, in You have a magic pill, which de-ages you by 20 years. You can take it once in your life only, so long as you are at least 20. What age — past, current or future — do you reckon is best to take it?
@forty2@lemmy.world avatar

I turned 44 just the other day; honestly, without a doubt I’d have taken the pill the day before my 21st birthday. One big do-over and minimal responsibilities to manage after the de-aging.

  • ✔️ Someone taking care of me 24/7 for a period measured in years?
  • ✔️ School? What a joke. Ace everything, be a social and intellectual prodigy?
  • ✔️ No bills, no responsibilities?
  • ✔️ Boundless energy and Wolverine-like healing?
  • ✔️ One set of friends in their 40s with life and professional advice/connections for you as you turn 21; and another set of friends your own age bursting with enthusiasm, ideas, and a gleam in their eye?

Like, I’m not seeing a downside to this over here…

CarbonIceDragon, in What are some food items that cost less than what they "should"?
@CarbonIceDragon@pawb.social avatar

I’m not sure if it’s what you mean exactly, but every time I buy sour cream, I’m shocked at how cheap it is, compared to other dairy products

otp,

Maybe it’s made from the milk they couldn’t sell? Haha

That’s a good point, though!

key, in What are some food items that cost less than what they "should"?

Rotisserie chickens

otp,

True! I’ve heard that those are about making customers hungry, or are used as loss-leaders. Their value to the business goes beyond the price!

Appoxo, (edited ) in What are some must have Firefox plugins?
@Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Dark Reader
uBlock Origin

Optional:
TWP Translate (is better than the new feature)
Tabliss (Another take on the “new page” in chrome)

Mr_Blott,

Is there a Deepl plugin? By far the most accurate translator I’ve used. Will check later

Appoxo,
@Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Just downloaded it to my work pc.
It has Google, Bing, Yandex and DeepL as translation integrations.

macattack,

Tabliss is very underrated. Nowadays, I rarely see my desktop background but always see the “new tab” and so “new tab” serves as the modern desktop background. I use great photos of my city but there are many categories in unsplash

jadelord,

Better? Firefox Translations does it locally without sending data to the cloud. The languages it support are very few though

Appoxo,
@Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Feel like I have more and better control and quality of translation with TWP than with the local option.
If you prefer local, be my guest.

frefi, (edited ) in What are some food items that cost less than what they "should"?
@frefi@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

imo I don’t think there is any food item costs less than it should

edit: I’m speaking as a person who is broke and I buy microwave meals because I don’t have time, money or energy to make/eat other stuff

otp,

I would argue that that’s because you should be paid more money. That’s why I’m not suggesting we should be paying more. Just kind of wondering what foods are “artificially” priced low due to exploitation of labour (etc).

PP_BOY_, in What are some food items that cost less than what they "should"?
@PP_BOY_@lemmy.world avatar

Rice. A 20lb bag can provide 70% of your food volume for a month and costs like $10. Easily the best poverty food hack there is.

otp,

We can’t grow rice in Canada, so that definitely applies to us! Still cheap here, though.

haggyg, (edited ) in What are some food items that cost less than what they "should"?

Always thought garlic bread is such a steal. Often you can get 2 (small) baguettes for less than £1 and G Bread is so good. When my plans of world domination come in, free garlic bread for everyone is first on the agenda.

otp,

I’m not sure if world domination usually comes with an election, but I’d vote for you!

Chainweasel, in What are some food items that cost less than what they "should"?

Snack cakes. Do you want to know why America has an obesity epidemic?
Because a whole box of Swiss cake rolls is $2.50 at Walmart and a deli salad is $5.00.

otp,

It’s not much different in Canada. I strongly dislike all the HFCS-sweetened stuff.

roofuskit, in What are some food items that cost less than what they "should"?
@roofuskit@lemmy.world avatar

Coffee and Chocolate for sure. Their prices rely really heavily on slavery or something so very near it you’re splitting hairs by drawing a line.

otp,

And even then, with chocolate, costs are rising. You can tell by how prevalent things like “chocolatey chips” are.

We’ve gotten too used to having cheap coffee and chocolate, and I’m disappointed with the substitutes…too bad I can’t afford the ethical stuff quite yet, lol
