ShittyBeatlesFCPres, in Texans (or neighbours), how was the cold spell?

I’m in New Orleans (so, a Texas neighbor?) and they canceled school and closed most of the major bridges because it rained the day it was getting colder. So, there was ice on the roads and bridges freeze quicker.

The biggest hassle (besides finding childcare) is that our homes are often raised off the ground and it barely ever freezes. So, you have exposed water pipes that can freeze and potentially burst when it gets that cold. You’re supposed to leave a faucet on a steady stream while it’s below freezing, which is basically always just a few hours overnight.

We don’t have the same issues as Texas with power in hot/cold weather. I think those are about policy choices unique to Texas.

cheese_greater,

Why does Texas so overwhelmingly vote for this crap? Do they ever get tired of losing for the sake of “owning” teh Libz?!

Rylyshar,
@Rylyshar@lemmy.world avatar

The Texas cities one democrat, but the rural areas go stupid. So we elect stupid. Keep trying, though.

GlendatheGayWitch,

I wouldn’t call Republicans winning by 10% of the vote to be overwhelming. I think that kind of narrative only serves to help Republicans by reinforcing the idea that it’s hopeless for democrats to win. Also doesn’t help that a lot of media only talk about elections and not the 2 week early voting period that we have. It’s so bizarre that early voting isn’t as well-known, given that TX was one of, if not the first, state to enact an early voting period over 40 years ago. NY only just started early voting a couple years ago!

@BeautifulMind@lemmy.world avatar

I’d take it today. I’m in my 50s, I’m an endurance athlete (I race bikes) and the calculus looks like: if I wait 20 years I get to experience body-age 50-70 twice, but if I take it now I experience 30-50 twice. Living my prime twice is better than enduring my decline twice, thanks

The day your health becomes a problem requiring more than regular effort to maintain.

That’ll rewind the clock to a lot of good years that maybe you can push back the decline a little further. Your clock will run out eventually, it’s inevitable. You just want to maximize the good years, not just youth or keeping yourself from death.

@captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works avatar

So I take this pill, and I become physically younger. I don’t move back in time, I’m still legally a 36 year old, but I look and feel like I’m 16.

It depends on how this works. Is the pill a magic spell where there’s a poof and I’m in my previous body as it was 20 years ago, or is it just “damage and wear and tear are undone?” Because I’ve had a few surgeries I don’t want to redo in the last 20 years; I don’t want my wisdom teeth or appendix back. I’ve had a dental implant since then, does that reverse itself…is a bicuspid going to try to grow out of my skull through the titanium socket bone grafted into my face?

For practicality’s sake I think no earlier than 43, simply because…at that point your younger self is a fully developed adult; if someone cards you and says “You’re telling me you’re 43 years old?” You can say “Yeah I’ve had some work done.”

Much younger than 40 years old and you have to repeat portions of adolescence and/or childhood, which would be inconvenient at best.

Silentiea,

Counterpoint: I didn’t discover I was trans until after the wrong puberty made being trans a lot harder. Going back to before that would let me right a pretty grand sense of wrongness.

Kolanaki, (edited ) in Is it possible to replace a damaged audio cable with a non audio cable?
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

You could but it would be an utter pain in the ass and might not work 100% as it was before it broke because the thickness of the wires are different and USB isn’t just 1. It’s 3 and they’re so thin, you’d need to braid them together.

If the plug broke, you couldn’t replace the audio’s connector with a USB connector.

Unless the audio device is also USB. Then it shouldn’t be much issue; though they may not be color coded with the insulation on the inside.

SpaceNoodle,

USB cables have four conductors and shielding.

Kolanaki, (edited )
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

Is it 4? 🤔 It’s been forever since I’ve opened one up and could have sworn it was 3 because I remember the Xbox controller had 4, but one of them wasn’t needed to slap a USB connector on it and use it with the PC. Maybe it had 5…

SpaceNoodle,

I don’t know about the XBox controllers, but USB 1 & 2 use four conductors: Vcc (+5V), Ground, D+, and D-.

owatnext,

The OG Xbox has five wires for the controller, I think the fifth was for like a light gun sorta thing. USB is four wires minimum, more for USB 3+.

anon6789, in Does AI-generated art posted on lemmy bother you?
@anon6789@lemmy.world avatar

If it is posted as AI art, I don’t have an issue. As others have commented, there are many valid use cases for it, and like any form of art, it’s not inherently good or bad.

The problem I have is when it gets mixed in with real images and there is no differentiation.

I do the bulk of posting at !superbowl, and one thing I do is promote raptor rescue operations, so I’m subbed to 60ish Facebook feeds for the various shelters I get news and photos from. As a result, I get recommended near every owl photo posted to Facebook.

Now, getting real image groups recommended to me is great. I just got a bunch of great images I’d never seen from a photography group it recommended. But I get so many obvious fakes posted as real images, and another larger group where it’s hard to tell.

I’m just someone that wanted to keep a Lemmy community going after the original buzz died down. I’m not an animal expert or a photographer, so I can’t always pick out what is a really good photo vs post processing, vs downright fake. I want to keep the legitimacy of what I do post intact, because I work hard to keep content factual. I pass on what could be some really great photos because I can’t always say they’re real.

Plus it would be nice to have them separate from real images in general. Sometimes I would like to see some AI owl pics, but once random groups or repost bots start mixing things in randomly, it makes people question things.

shalafi,

Your work on that sub is appreciated.

Chickenstalker, in Countries that let anyone in?

If you’re American, you should keep your nationality. Instead, apply for work visa and later, permanent residency at your host country. Reason being, the American citizenship makes the local government think twice about sending you to the gulag etc plus you could seek refuge at a US Embassy anywhere around the world. If you migrate to Aus or NZ, they don’t particularly care that you have two citizenships, so you can become a citizen there but secretly don’t tell the US gov. Bear in mind, you have to pay US taxes as a citizen even if abroad.

Regarding a country to move to, try Japan and become an “English Teacher”. Japanese schools regularly take in native English speakers not so much as English teachers, but more of a cultural exchange teacher. There’s a very low qualifications requirements but be aware that you will be assigned to some school in bumfuck nowhere rice fields. Go search for vids on youtube about this topic.

bitwaba,

The US is one of a hand full of countries that require you to pay income tax on money earned abroad. If you are a US citizen that has moved to another country and received citizenship there, and you aren’t worried about having “the local government send you to the gulag”, then renouncing your US citizenship is probably the best financial decision you can make. Caveat: they make you pay up front when renouncing for all of the potential tax they would have earned from you had you stayed a citizen abroad for the rest of your life.

Bondrewd,

What the fuck. So lets say, if the country to move to has a minimum income, then you will have to pay the tax for atleast the minimum income until retirement? Am I getting this right?

bitwaba,

Yes, but its not as aggressive as it seems: 1) the US gives a tax-free amount up to ~$100,000 earned abroad, and 2) that’s after deducting the tax you paid to the country you earned it in (as an example, say you earned $100,000 abroad and paid 30% tax, you’d only have to report $70,000, and because that 70k is below the tax-free amount (in the $100k neighborhood), you don’t owe any additional tax in the US.

HOWEVER, the tax-free break is only given if you file your taxes. If the IRS decides you need to be audited, and you didn’t file (because you live in a different country and think it’s absurd to have to file taxes to a country you didn’t earn that money in), you lose the tax free amount (which basically means you can be double taxed).

It depends whether I can somehow go back to the body of a 20 year old but keep my current 40 year old brain. I’m not going to pretend the majority of my improvements in patience, empathy, humility, work ethic and dgaf-ness are me consciously maturing instead of improvements in brain chemistry.

I have 2 choices. I can save the pill for when I or a loved on is in serious danger of death or I can do a shit ton of LSD, like an absurd amount of LSD, enough to actually break me and then reset.

It’s a tough choice /s
