    sagrotan, in What are Lemmy's unwritten rules?
    @sagrotan@lemmy.world avatar

    Linux is bloat, I’m training the ants in a giant maze, got Doom running on it last weekend.

    Devi, in My beagle has suddenly started resource guarding random stuff. What should I do to get this behavior to stop?

    I'm a fosterer with quite a bit of dog training education. I second the advice that you need a good qualified behaviourist, this means degree level study or above.

    However, for the meantime, nobody should be taking anything from him by force. This will worsen the behaviour. The things he's taking don't sound like they pose danger to him so take all the urgency out of the response. It's anxiety driven so you want to make everything really chill.

    Firstly, clear everything away, as much as possible get things in drawers or too high to reach. The less he can get that he shouldn't the better.

    Work on swapping with a low value item like a toy he doesn't play with much, so say an old ball, give him the ball, get a treat and offer the treat while holding your hand for the ball. What should happen is he drops the ball, give him the treat, then hand the ball back. He's learned that nothing bad happens here. He gets the treat AND the ball. Do this 5 times in a row, then leave the ball with him. He's learned here that it's all very chill and you've reduced his anxiety.

    As he gets better at this, increase the challenge slowly, maybe a toy he likes a bit better, then better again. At this point you can also start swapping items, so you take a teddy, give him a treat, then give him a ball. If this makes him anxious then slow down, you want it to be really chill for him.

    Eventually he'll start giving you stuff just to see what he can get. It's a fun game.

    Another exercise you can try if he does get something you don't want him to have is to throw treats away. If he has something you can throw a treat in one place, then another, then another, while he's having a great time, quietly remove whatever he had, he'll probably have forgotten he had it, but make sure it's quickly hidden to help, give him loads of fuss when it's gone for extra memory wiping!

    Also make sure he is getting enough exercise and attention, and he's not in pain, these kinds of problems usually start if a dog is feeling crappy for whatever reason.

    LaunchesKayaks,
    @LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world avatar

    Thank you so much for all the advice! I’ll definitely try out what you said. He just got a checkup and the vet said he is fine. He could probably use more exercise, but I physically can’t take him out because my leg is messed up. My sister is in charge of that during the day until my parents get home.

    Devi,

    Exercise doesn't have to be walking, how mobile can you be? Can you hide food around the house? Or throw a frisbee?

    It might be tricky to teach but if you're stuck in one spot you can get a couple of balls and play fetch, you hold the second ball, refuse to throw it until he brings the first one within reaching distance, smart dogs get that quite quickly. It also helps their brain cause they have to work out what you want them to do.

    Talking of the brain, sometimes thinking is as good as doing, so you can set up puzzles, set up a frozen kong, all sorts.

    LaunchesKayaks,
    @LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world avatar

    The room I’m in isn’t good for fetch or stuff like that. I’m going to see if my parents can help me into the yard tomorrow so I can play with all of the dogs. My sister said she made up a new game with them that they love but won’t go into more detail lol.

    I’ve given my dogs kongs, but the beagle loses interest if he can’t easily get the stuff out. If I make the kings easy, he’ll eat it all in 30 seconds. The puppy isn’t food motivated and just ignores the kongs.

    Kyle,

    This is such a good reply! I didn’t see it before I posted despite it being older, must have been a fedi hiccup.

    Devi,

    Zippit, (edited ) in Are there r/WorldNews Israel bots or am I hallucinating

    There are. In the first week of the attacks, the Israel Times had a blog post about Act 2 of the war. Here’s the blog post: …timesofisrael.com/our-role-in-act-2-of-the-war/

    My country’s news outlet even has a section that informs us about the disinformation campaigns going on on both sides and addressing/correcting what’s probably the truth.

    The link says nothing about bots.

    You are making this sound more mysterious than it is.

    The benign terminology in this blog article is: “act 2” is the ground offensive, the “act 1” was Hamas’ attacks on Oct 7. There’s also no mention of “act 3”.

    BluesF,

    Did you read the article? It’s suggesting Israeli citizens step into conversations and defend Israel. No need for bots, there are people to do it.

    redballooon, (edited )

    I did, and it says things, but not the things that the original commenter said, nor implied. But apparently calling out misinformation is not welcome here.

    BluesF,

    They didn’t say anything about bots? Not sure what you’re trying to call out.

    anarchost,

    I remember back when r/conspiracy blamed everything to the left of the John Birch Society on Mossad, because they liked exchanging “Jewish” with “Israeli” to look less like raging anti-semites.

    But in reality… Mossad does exist. Duh. Foreign intelligence and propaganda campaigns are universal.

    captainlezbian,

    Yeah the thing about Mossad is that they’re on par with the CIA in ambition and skill and unfortunately they also happen to be Jewish. One side is going to look at them because CIA-like, the other is going to look at them because Jewish.

    Frankly I think they’re probably trying to influence things some, but from what I hear they’re more of the assassin type. I think a lot of people have a lot of interest in the United States heavily funding Israel and ignoring Ukraine. And the people who benefit from us not throwing massive amounts of weapons at Israel tend to suck at influencing us in these ways

    pugsnroses77, in What cheap tool/gadget do you use that greatly improves your daily life?

    rice cooker. i have one that i use like a fancy crockpot so i can leave the house and come home to hot food. mandolin or a food processor is a close second, makes chopping veggies a breeze

    Dave,
    @Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

    My issue with food processors is they take more time to clean than they save.

    Which one do you use?

    pugsnroses77,

    i use a mini kitchenaid i got for $50 a few years ago. its easier to store n clean bc its tiny. it isnt good for big batches but is perfect for a few carrots and onion, or a handful of spinach. then i usually just swish it all with warm water and im good to go. i clean while i cook so its basically all done by the time im eating.

    Dave,
    @Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

    I guess I just don’t find it hard to chop things with a knife, which is very easy to clean. I have a food processor, but getting it out of the cupboard takes almost as much time as dicing an onion with a knife.

    pugsnroses77,

    i think for me is im a disaster and usually will end up with veggie particles all over the counter and floor and then have to spend time cleaning that up else the cat gets his far face all over it. on top of that i have a super tiny food processor which makes getting it in and out super easy. if i only had my larger one i could not see myself bothering with it.

    AgnosticMammal,

    Rinse after use, then its a matter of wiping down in hot soapy water.

    Never let the debris dry in the food processor or you’re gonna have a bad time. Same with blenders.

    Yeah, if you can’t soak it, get that food off before it dries. This is why I prefer kitchen tools that you can take apart. I replaced my Foreman grill with a griddle with removable plates and love it, even though the Foreman had a bit more cooking area. Plus I got waffle plates and also got rid of the waffle maker that I rarely used because it was such a pain to clean if you ever overestimated how much batter it needed.

    Curious_Canid, in So is the US slipping into Civil War?
    @Curious_Canid@lemmy.ca avatar

    I don’t think the conservatives are sufficiently unified to form a single opposition army. The problem with basing your appeals on hating “outsiders” is that you end up with a lot of internal hatred too. There’s also a strong undercurrent of “no one can tell me what to do” that makes central control unlikely.

    What seems more likely are terrorist incidents, carried out be individuals and small groups, without any overall communication or strategy. We’re already seeing some of that. The lack of coordination won’t prevent it from happeing, but will prevent it from achieving anything.

    I don’t think there are very many people within the MAGA movement who honestly want to resort to violence, whatever they tell themselves. The ones who are actually willing are the ones who wanted to hurt someone anyway. Politics provides them with an excuse, not a motivation.

    I think we’re going to have a nasty time for a while, but I don’t think a right-wing takeover by violence has any chance of happening. I’m much more worried about a political takeover that then turns into an authoritarian coup. The left-wing has a much better chance of organizing as a whole, but I don’t think there are that many people ready to fight from that side either, but that could change as conditions get worse.

    OneWomanCreamTeam,

    The right has been used, and steadily intensifying stochastic terrorism for a while now. You’re right, it’s not a strategy for a military takeover of the US. It’s just one step in the political takeover.

    ApatheticCactus,

    Dude, bidet add-ons are like $40 that work great. I agree I wish it was more widespread though.

    PM_Your_Nudes_Please,

    $40 for the basic ones. They still work great, (I have them on all my toilets at home!) but they definitely aren’t as flashy as the Japanese toilets. Self-cleaning seats, heated seats, heated water for the bidet, etc…

    xX_fnord_Xx,

    We have plenty of bidets here in the States, they just install them outside the bathrooms and they mount them kind of high so they’re kinda awkward to get a good clean angle, though.

    Aceticon, (edited )

    I’m in Portugal and bidets are standard in all home toilets around here.

    And it’s not just here: the word itself - “bidet”- is actually French.

    Desktop vs laptop doesn’t matter much for any given CAD software. Just make sure you hit the recommend specs of whatever software you’re looking to use.

    The bigger thing will be if whatever CAD software that is is Windows exclusive or not. I’d check that before deciding to go the Linux route (which most people on here are going to try to steer you towards.)

    Good point!

    SpeakinTelnet,

    I’ll say as a cad professional, the linux space was abandoned by the largest companies a while ago. Unless you go browser based (onshape) your software will either be less mature (Freecad, solvespace) or straightup script based (openscad).

    Or you will have to use a dedicated VM but IMHO it’s not worth it when you can just dual-boot.

    GreenAppleTree,

    Desktop vs laptop doesn’t matter much for any given CAD software. Just make sure you hit the recommended specs.

    There’s truth in this, but also caveats. I work with a bunch of mechanical engineers. In the warmer months, while working on really complex drawings, they need to take frequent breaks.

    It’s because laptops are designed to be compact, by sacrificing airflow. So when they run anything heavy, the CPU would heat up and start throttling itself.

    On a desktop, easily solved by slapping on a semi-decent cheap cooler. On laptops, well, you take frequent breaks.

    PrettyFlyForAFatGuy,

    you could get round this a bit by going for laptops that are designed to be used under load for extended periods of time… like gaming laptops.

    Despite the good specs i wouldn’t want to be doing much heavy computing on a thin and light

    Lemjukes,

    Nah nah nah nah just make em all draw in the walk in.

    Fermion, (edited )

    If the CAD package can leverage GPU computing, then an eGPU is a good compromise. That way you can have plenty of power and airflow at the desk for intensive tasks, but you don’t need to lug all the hardware to the floor for interfacing with plc’s or to meetings. Although systems with good eGPU support are often expensive enough that keeping a separate desktop workstation and a lightweight laptop is competitive.

    High single core cpu clock speeds and lots of ram should be the first priority for cad. Solidworks, for example, does not handle running out of ram gracefully at all.

    BreadstickNinja,

    That’s not even necessarily mixing the two up so much as failing to distinguish cultures within “Asia” in the first place. A lot of people think of the whole region as one place. Put some soy and garlic on something? You’ve got an “Asian” dish. Never mind that there are numerous regional culinary traditions within China alone.

    See also: Africa.

    rottingleaf,

    There are people on the Web unable to distinguish between Asia as in “China, Japan, Kamboja, Vietnam …” and Asia as in “Iran and Saudi Arabia”.

    BreadstickNinja,

    Yes, but not to mention Asia as in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh! 1.5 billion people living on the Asian continent, but “Asian” in popular American usage seems to only refer to China/Korea/Japan, and maybe Southeast Asia to a slightly lesser extent.

    rottingleaf,

    Ye-es. And then SE Asia is not the same as CJK, and then Middle Asia is not the same as West Asia/Middle East, and then India in itself has Dravidic parts, and then …

    Though, returning to the example above with “Asian” dish, in Russia people usually refer to cuisine by country, not by continent. But may make a few diplomatic errors (possibly mistakes) this way, like saying that Armenians and Iranians drink Turkish coffee, etc.

    That said, my daily driver is actually Infuse, which points at the Jellyfin server because:

    1. Infuse has the most reliable playback and never needs transcoding (Synology server, AppleTV client)
