I thought about a lot of variants, but I stopped at a gas can, a simple device to make the gas out and a basic tripod to weight a pot over it. If they have it, they can boil water for tea or just clean water, food bought in bulk in a grocery store, to wash themselves.
It greatly depends on what they have for now. Maybe a tent is in more priority if they don’t have one, or even something to lay on.
Make sure you go to Settings and select any languages you want to see as well as Undetermined - I had a similar issue which was fixed by doing this.
If that’s not it, it may be a delay in comments federating if it’s a community you just recently subscribed to, or there could be federation issues. If the post is on an instance that’s defederated with yours, I don’t think it would show up at all, unless the defederation happened after it was made.
You can check who an instance has defederated with by checking the Instances link at the bottom of the mane page (or adding /instances after the URL). There’s also a tool to see what other instances have defederated with a particular one here: defed.xyz
I buy from online stores (eg, clothing, jewelry, beauty) who don’t use amazon, and fortunately I’ve never seen evidence of amazon involved in those purchases. I admire your efforts to find alternatives from that awful company
You wanna hear a good German joke?
This was my thought a well. Just using the internet at all guarantees that we’re supporting Amazon, Google, and Microsoft because they host most of the content.
This conundrum points back to our need to have agency, and something OP will/should address. One way to lower anxiety is to understand where we have personal agency and where we don’t. No matter how hard or how long I beat on a brick wall with my bare hands I will not damage it, only tire and damage myself. This isn’t limited to man made/capitalism. I also cannot swim across an ocean. Recognizing when I can make a difference and accepting my personal limits allows me to focus my goals around things where I will succeed or produce results. They may be (globally) small, but they affect me and my community in a meaningful way. I might even use that brick wall to provide a brace for leverage or the water in the ocean for salt or brackish irrigation. Expending energy that I know will not affect change only lets them beat me twice.
I used to believe this stat too, then I looked it up. AWS is about 12.5% of their income. Online retail is about 50%. Your point still stands though, you can’t easily avoid Amazon’s revenue stream.
Then we’re both wrong. A deeper dive into newer numbers shows AWS REVENUE is 16% (12.5% is a year or two old). online stores REVENUE is 50%. The thing is that online stores recently started losing money so AWS INCOME is currently Amazon’s bread winner. (Edit: swipe type spelling mistakes)
Germans do have humor. It is actually not that different from English humor in style.
The idea that Germans have no humor comes from a number of reasons. To understand a foreign joke, you need a thorough grasp of that language. And this applies to any foreign language - I could not understand e.g. a French joke, but I would not deny that they most likely love humor, too.
Then, most English or American peoples impression of Germans stem from times of war or shortly after - only a small minority bothered to update their views later. During the war, allied propaganda had obviously different goals than promote German humor or Germans as funny people. And people in the early years of post-war Germany had not much to laugh about in life, their prime job was to survive in less than funny circumstances.
Or illegal content because of the way content replicates unfortunately. I don’t care about people’s opinions, I actually want to see the actual, real range of human opinion and ideas, but I worry about content - it’s why I would never consider hosting my own instance.
I practice chess on lichess and look up sports scores. Or else I go on Lemmy. I look at my phone a lot less now. Finishing games I never got to finish. Talk to my family more. Stuff like that
