beckerist, in What are some of your cheap eats hacks?

When you order pizza, ask for extra sauce, not cheese. They typically don’t charge for that but often include extra toppings to make the pizza look “normal”

Kecessa, in What are some small things we should change about the human body?

Fix our spine and knees

ghostdoggtv, in The transition from the holiday season back to the normal drudgery is so depressing. Is there any way to make Jan / Feb less depressing?

The holidays are a drain and I’m grateful they’re over with. We’ve got better things we could be doing.

victorz,

This is me as well. The stress of the holidays brings me to the brink of collapse until I get to go back to normalcy again. I hate December.

root_beer, in Why was Ronald Reagan and Nancy Reagan so bad for the American people?

I guess it also warrants asking, what good, if any, did Reagan do for America?

JoMiran, in Why was Ronald Reagan and Nancy Reagan so bad for the American people?
@JoMiran@lemmy.ml avatar

If you have Paramount+, don’t mind doing a free trial, or like to sail the seven seas, you can watch The Reagans documentary series. Another documentary that gives you some insight into the type of people they were is the Rock Hudson one. The TL;DR on that one is that they had been good friends for decades, especially Nancy, and the moment it came out that he had AIDS, they pretended he had never existed.

Ronald was basically an idiot but Nancy was a truly foul human being.

The ol’ throat goat.

otp, in Mickey Mouse is now public domain (Steamboat Willie specifically). What do you think we will see this year?

A lot of Disney throwing its weight around as people accidentally overstep the bounds of copyright, trademark and other legal stuff like that.

Not saying Disney would be in the right. But Disney is bonkers for this kind of stuff, and they’ve got ridiculous amounts of money to spend in court.

someguy3,

Well the copyright expired, that’s why it’s now public domain. But the trademark is still there.

Rhynoplaz,

That’s why they worked him into one of their animated intro logos a few years ago.

someguy3,

A trademark (also written trade mark or trade-mark[1]) is a type of intellectual property consisting of a recognizable sign, design, or expression that identifies a product or service from a particular source and distinguishes it from others.[2][3]

I would say an animated intro isn’t a trademark, and even then making a movie with that material isn’t copying someone’s trademark for your trademark. But this could get interesting.

unrelatedkeg,

I mean they just need to slap a ™ on every official appearence of Mickey. Hell, they can easily say an abstract representstion of Mickey’s ears represent Disney and they wouldn’t even be wrong.

someguy3, (edited )

This is pushing my knowledge but trademark infringement would be if you use their logo as your logo. You can’t mislead people into thinking your product comes from them. That doesn’t mean you can’t ever have public domain things in your product.

Trollivier, (edited ) in Anyone who recently had a "Yup, it was that kinda day" day. What happened?

In November, I was sick for a month. I was coughing like crazy after contracting a respiratory virus.

Early December, I’m getting better. I was doing my things, like, changing my son’s bedsheets, when I had a small cough. And I heard “clok” sound in my body, followed by a very intense pain in my ribcage.

I had cracked a rib. Not caused by how intense the cough was, but by repetition of the coughing for more than a month.

Wirlocke,

I didn’t know that was possible, new fear unlocked.

june, in Anyone who recently had a "Yup, it was that kinda day" day. What happened?

It happened over two days.

Thursday 2 weeks ago I got laid off due to the economic environment.

The stock market hit a new record high that day.

The next day a grant I got one of my programs named in came through for 80k. Between that and my other program revenue, I’d have been fully paying for myself the next 2 years.

mwalimu, in What is a nifty little feature modern gadgets have lost?
@mwalimu@baraza.africa avatar

FM receiver on phones + 3.5mn jack was a crucial source of local radio transmissions. I suspect some phones still ship radio receivers but the popular types like Samsungs and iPhones don’t seem to care (or perhaps that competes with their music and podcast markets).

0xb0b,

Here in Italy since 2020 it’s not legal to sell a device that has an FM receiver if that device doesn’t also have a DAB/DAB+ receiver, so many companies have been shipping software updates that disabled the FM receiver app even if they were compliant on older phones. Kinda sucks.

mwalimu,
@mwalimu@baraza.africa avatar

That sucks! As long as a device can decode the signals, I don’t see why they should phase it out just to be compatible with DAB+ (especially when infrastructural costs are not a major factor).

leraje, in What if reddit joins race of services joing fediverse?
@leraje@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Just like with Threads, you have to ask - why are they doing it? What’s in it for them? How good an internet citizen are they? And the answers for me, just like Threads, are not good for the fediverse.

Some of the replies to people against Threads federating are that those of us who don’t like the idea are isolationists who don’t want the fediverse to grow. They’re wrong. Nobody I know is protesting WordPress federating, or Discourse or Flipboard or microblog or (if it happens) Tumblr. The fediverse getting bigger is not a bad thing. But the likes of Meta and reddit are not good internet citizens. Being picky and having standards about choosing to federate with entities like that is the most responsible thing we can do.

willya, in What do the symbols next to usernames mean on Lemmy?
@willya@lemmyf.uk avatar

The one you attached means that they’re banned.

LemmyKnowsBest,

If theyre banned, how are they participating?

justlookingfordragon,
@justlookingfordragon@lemmy.world avatar

It might be a temporary ban - those do not retroactively remove comments of the person in question IIRC.

willya,
@willya@lemmyf.uk avatar

Who? They haven’t even gave us a user@instance.

bartolomeo,
@bartolomeo@suppo.fi avatar

Banned from the server where their comment with that icon appears?

I’m still trying to grasp federation; sorry if it’s a stupid question.

willya, (edited )
@willya@lemmyf.uk avatar

Banned from your instance. What user are you looking at? If they’re banned on their home instance it federates everywhere as far as I know.

NinjaTeensy, (edited ) in So, who or what ruined Christmas this year?

My girlfriend of 4 years decided to dump me.

Texas_Hangover,

Hopefully before you gave her her presents.

Sweetpeaches69,

That reminds me that one year, my cousin’s boyfriend got her a $1500 coffee machine, a flight of syrup and like a $500 giftcard to a local coffee shop for beans. Turns out, she was cheating on him with a woman at the time, and she broke up with him like 1 week later to be with her. It took all of us chewing her out to give the poor guy his present back so at least he could recoup the ~$2200 he spent.

Crashumbc,

Unless his was rich and I mean RICH, he was fucking insane for spending that much anyway.

NinjaTeensy,

We both gave each other a gift before it happened but mine did cost significantly more.

snaprails, in So, who or what ruined Christmas this year?
@snaprails@lemmy.world avatar

Christians. They should never have been allowed to get involved. Have a Cool Yule y’all ;-)

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I’m Jewish and never really cared for Christmas much because I always felt like an outsider- until I spent one in the UK, where it’s pretty much entirely secular and just about having fun. Such a different experience. I’d probably like Christmas in America if it was more like that.

sab,
@sab@kbin.social avatar

As a Scandinavian, I'm genuinely super happy to hear that! As far as I'm concerned the Christians are very welcome to celebrate whatever they'd like, but they have no right to monopolize the festivities. It's winter solstice goddamn it, it's been celebrated since the beginning of time and belongs to everyone!

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

It sucks how much of it is Christian in the U.S. My whole life it was, “oh, you’re not a Christian and willing to do our Christian things for Christmas? You’re not one of us,” until I went to the UK. I wish people here understood.

elephantium,
@elephantium@lemmy.world avatar

IDK, it seems more like SHOP SHOP SHOP in the U.S. than anything religious.
