With OLED screens its kind of crazy that simulated notification lights aren’t a thing. You could have all the other pixels off except for a dot on the screen which would act as a notification light when the display was off.
Pixel phones and I believe Samsung phones just light up the OLED display to let you know that there is notification. An independent LED was only necessary because screens would have to light up the whole display to indicate notification, but now we have better screens so that isn’t necessary.
I have a Samsung and have it set to light up the screen but it’s not the same as that LED. I used to be able to set the LED color for messages from certain people. Ex: Blue was a friend, Red was mom. The LED would also stay that color until I read the message where as the current screen color only lights up for a few seconds (unless there is a setting I’m missing).
Ad-Hoc wireless networking. I miss it, was useful back in the day if you needed to share files with multiple people without a wireless router at a location. Most laptops don’t support this anymore. To be fair, I’ve only really wanted to use it maybe twice in the last 10 years.
If you’re on Android, I think this still works. Try setting an alarm for 5 minutes from now and turn your phone off. It should turn back on for the alarm.
Edit: Just tried it and it worked on the native OnePlus clock app, but not on the Google clock.
You mean hardware alarm on the phone that works while the phone is off (meaning an alarm running on the RTC of the phone), or actual physical alarm clocks? Because the latter still exist.
I’m a graphic designer. When I was a teenager, I enjoyed making avatars and signatures for people on forums which gave me a headstart on developing some of the skills I would use later on. My parents pushed me into nursing but after two years in, I knew it wasn’t for me so I made the switch to graphic design and I’m fortunate that it worked out.
I think this path is great and I envy you a little. Very few people manage to maintain the passion of their youth and then earn money with it. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this path continues for you!
Also got into graphic design after starting off on a path of really not knowing what to do, but leaning towards engineering. Went into that program before I just said “Fuck it, let’s try graphic design instead” and really it was the best decision I ever made. Got a job right out of school, student loans paid off within 5 years after graduating and I’m in a relatively fulfilling career making more than either of my parents made.
Bought a house for $18,000 during the mid 90’s in a run down neighborhood. Now the neighborhood is the most desirable in an urban city. After the 2007 real estate crash I was able to move to suburbs and I rent out my original house. It was more luck than anything plus a willingness to live in a rough part of town. I’m always playing a game in my head now. What neighborhood is next?
I had my holiday time off canceled for the second year in a row, but I can’t even do any work because the customer that threw their problems at us while they’re on vacation didn’t provide enough specifications.
During my standup yesterday we literally determined I don’t have any work to do. Thanks boss.
I was writing my resignation in my head all weekend instead of enjoying my holiday.
It’s the customer’s responsibility to define the nature of the issue. People in support aren’t magic if you provide no details and then become non-available then that’s a customer problem.
Everyone made fun of me for bringing a bunch of handheld radios to my sister’s campsite wedding (except my sister, actually, who loved the idea). Well it turns out the lot we were going to park everyone at was a tow away lot, so we needed to valet cars. My radios came in clutch for coordinating that.
