Habahnow, in Good “Buy for Life” Brands

-Good year welt leather boots in general last a very long time. I have a pair of chippewa boots that have lasted me since 2016 and they’re still good. Haven’t needed to resole them, they’re very comfortable. I’ve worn them maybe 20-30% of the time(I let them rest at least a day between wears). -Straight razors and DE razors last a very long time, and they can both be significantly cheaper than regular disposable razors and electric shavers. -PIAA silicone windshield wipers (I think many silicone based wipers in general) are as BIFL as can be for windshield wipers. I think I have the same pair on my car from 2016.

hydrospanner,

PIAA silicone windshield wipers (I think many silicone based wipers in general) are as BIFL as can be for windshield wipers. I think I have the same pair on my car from 2016.

I was very disappointed with PIAA wipers when I got a set.

Expensive, and while they did last slightly longer than the 1-1.5 years I usually expect from wipers, from day one, their performance was noticeably worse than all but the cheapest common brands. Basically they never, ever actually cleanly wiped away all the rain. Streaky and leaving trails of water from day one.

So yeah, they lasted longer, but it was at the level of half-worn-out blades anyway, so to me, it was basically a wash on price of one set of PIAA vs two sets of some other brand…and with the other brand, at least I’d get the two honeymoon phases where they were brand new and working fantastically.

Habahnow,

I think you should try another pair and complain to PIAa. My wipers wipe water amazingly, even now. I can imagine some wear over time, but the fact that yours were not wiping well to begin with tells me it may have been a faulty instance (or their quality has dropped significantly recently). Regardless that’s a shitty experience

hydrospanner,

Since then, I went back to Bosch, which are consistently great, then two summers ago I had a windshield crack that led to replacement, and the replacement company (Safelite) also recommended new wipers (to avoid any glass reside embedded in the wiper scratching the new windshield) and I took them up on buying their own brand to replace…and they’ve been oddly good.

Not as good as Bosch to start, but better than PIAA, and then they’ve gone on to last almost two years at a pretty good performance level.

While I’ll probably go back to Bosch in the spring, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend these Safelite wipers to anyone.

(My luck: it’d turn out that Safelite uses PIAA for their wipers. 😝)

Thankful there won’t be ice, that was the biggest problem last time. As long as ercot can keep up with the elctricity demand, should be okay.

For me it’s watching steve1989 MRE reviews on YouTube. Dude has the chillest voice and demeanor, and the content is just engaging enough to keep my mind from spiraling off onto random shit, but not exciting enough to keep me awake. The only problem is waking up to my phone on the floor or buried God knows where in my sheets.

And just in case Steve browses Lemmy, I also like watching his videos while awake too! 😄

Having something to laugh about right before bed helps a lot. Oddly I know this due to being a sufferer of the pseudobulbar effect.

I sort of have it where something I think of is so funny to the point I cry-laugh but its thoroughly on the happy/joyful side

Laughing is definitely a mini cardio workout tho

There this French fold band, Skáld that usually sings in Old Norse language. In the song Hross, the first line of the chorus is “Hverir eru þeir tveir?”. The way they sing those first two words sounds like “Fevereiro”, which is the Portuguese (my native language) word for February.

betterdeadthanreddit, (edited ) in What's the funniest mishearing of song lyrics you've had?

Golden Earring - Radar Love

We’ve got a thing that’s called red hot love

We’ve got a wave in the air

Red hot love

In my defense, I was hearing this over sometimes-fuzzy analog radio rather than off a tape or CD where the track title might clue me in. Less defensible: not noticing the other words that make more sense when talking about radar.

Rhynoplaz,

I always thought that song was “Red Alert”

cheese_greater,

dmention7,

I always thought it was redeye love, in the same context as a redeye flight.

There’s low level constant pain that’s not easily comparable to anything else, which gets worse the day after any adjustments are done. And make sure you get a retainer you can wear each night.

My mistake was not asking for an alternative retainer, and grinding teeth at night kept breaking my retainers until it got too expensive to keep getting new ones. Now I’ll have to get braces or Invisalign or something to redo the straightening.

Good news is, I can still eat better than I could before I got braces.

In other news, seeing the Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist about my sinuses ended up curing the grinding along with mouth breathing and swollen sinuses.

Obviously this is the right choice

Is it? It’s ok to get a second opinion from other dentists.

If their current position isn’t causing you pain or tooth/jaw wear problems, then straightening them is a cosmetic decision. And if you didn’t even realize they were that crooked until the dentist suggested straightening them, then the cosmetic aspect hasn’t been bothering you.

In my country (US), dentistry is notorious for upselling unnecessary cosmetic procedures.

For example, I went to a new dentist and he found two “developing” cavities he wanted to proactively drill out and fill and a “flaw in the enamel” he could fix with a veneer. I thought that was weird since I have never had a cavity before in my life and the “enamel flaw” was cosmetic only and never bothered me. I went to another dentist for a second opinion and she told me my teeth were fine. 5 years later and those “developing” cavities never formed.

dingus,

Yeah, I had to switch dentists because of a move, and my current dentist won’t stop recommending me braces.

“It’s not just cosmetic. It will help the functionality and longevity of your teeth.” I mean, my teeth aren’t absolutely perfect, but they function and look fine to me. I have only ever had one other dentist mention that as a suggestion forever ago when I was a kid, and they didn’t keep harping in about it.

It makes me super suspicious about it because the last dentist I had never mentioned a thing about braces, and my current one keeps bringing it up unprompted. My current one also tried to sell me a $300 toothbrush.

Get a second opinion.

nick,

Well that’s not wrong though. Misaligned teeth can wear down faster, causing issues down the road. Also it can cause headaches and a bunch of other issues.

As for the toothbrush, was it the oral b IO? Mine did too, and I reluctantly bought it. The reason is I press too hard when brushing and I was affecting my enamel and gums. My dad and brother both do the same and both had to get gum grafts. The toothbrush notifies you with a light if you press too hard (or too gently), so it helps train me. I’m liking it

dingus,

Yeah, I don’t mean to say that it’s a total scam…just that it’s ok to want to weigh your options to see what is worth it and what isn’t. Especially because braces ain’t cheap. And if someone doesn’t want it, then it’s appreciated to stop harping on them about it every single time.

I honestly have no idea what model the toothbrush was, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it had that sort of feature. Nice to have for some, but not something I seem to have a need for.

Atin, in What Kind of Natural Disasters Occur Where You Live? And How Have You Prepared for Them?

Droughts and bushfires are the two biggest worries here. We get occasional floods, but those occur more often in surrounding towns where the local councils haven’t done anything in years to clear out the riverbeds.

chris, in Do the ToS of lemmy instances contain any indication of monetising user data?
@chris@l.roofo.cc avatar

With FEP-c118 there is currently an extension to the activitypub protocol in the works to allow setting a license on posts. If you don’t add a license info in your posts the licensing is unclear. I think that some jurisdictions give a default copyright and some protections to the author but I don’t know how that works.

With the fediverse you you have as much or as little rights as when you put it on your private blog without explicit licensing. If someone uses your works without your consent you still have to find out and you have to protected your rights yourself.

There are currently no lemmy or kbin instances that have monetization options. The only ActivityPub software I know that can show ads is misskey.

In the end you have to be aware that any kind of open social network is like screaming your thoughts towards a big crowd. You lose most of your control over it the second it’s out. It is nearly impossible to track who has the information and who shares it with others.

There are legal protections in some parts of the world but even then you first have to find out that something bad happened. If an instance were to start monetizing data it would probably cut off pretty fast and all the communities would probably move.

Still if there is stuff you don’t want everyone to know don’t post it publicly.
