No, I am 17 which means I still have to live with parents and among other issues my mom doesn’t allow me to have access to my clothes. So, if I want some, I have to ask. In the end, I can get fresh underwear daily, but the rest only weekly, which isn’t exactly optimal.
Oh, and we don’t have a functional washing machine for years, so it’s not like I could just keep some of my clothes away from her.
I can’t address the situation, but you should know that you can always hand wash limited items if you know you’re going to need them, like a spare pair of socks.
At the bathroom sink, get them good and wet, hand wash with ANY available body-safe soap (hand soap, shower gel, shampoo, even mild dishwashing liquid) by rubbing the soap around in your wet hands to create a lather, and then add that lather to the items, rubbing them all together well between your hands for a couple of minutes. Less is more: don’t use so much soap that you have to rewash to get all the soap out. Use as little as you can. Rinse well, and then look and smell: if they look clean and smell clean, and you got as much of the soap out as you can, they won’t embarrass you. No one will be able to tell you handwashed them when you wear them.
Squeeze as much water out as you can, but avoid wringing because it stretches and can even damage your items. Hang them up over a towel rod, a hamper rail, the side of the tub, or even laid out across a bed or the back of a sofa, using a towel underneath if you don’t want to get something wet (like a wooden chair back) and they will dry completely overnight. Don’t try to dry them in a closet or places with limited airflow. Hand washed items tend to be stiff when you air dry them like this, especially if you’re using non-laundry soap, but put them on and the scratchy stiffness goes away instantly.
This isn’t for every day use, or for endlessly repeated practice, but it absolutely works in a pinch and used to be common practice back when people didn’t have so many clothes and/or their own washing machines. It won’t hurt your clothes at all to do this as long as they are machine washable anyway, and even if you do it repeatedly just try get them into a machine every so often to get the non-laundry-soap buildup out of them. As long as it’s not a special care item, you literally cannot screw it up by handwashing it carefully and rinsing it as thoroughly as you can.
Everyone should know how to hand wash an item of clothing in an emergency, and now you do too.
I don’t see how the national guard isn’t already federal, it’s the national guard, not the state guard. They get called up just like regular military for wars.
Cut off their money, court martial them, dishonorable discharge, take away their guns and vehicles. These belong to the military, not Texas.
The national guard is part of the military, so funded and supported by the feds. Unlike normal army units though, each state or territory has its own national guard unit under the command of the governor. The intention is to give each state the power to quickly respond to emergency situations without needing federal approval. They’re the successors to the old state militias, but have much stronger federal ties now.
They swear allegiance to the federal constitution, the governor, and the president. With the president being CIC and having power over the governor and the constitution having power overall. So in theory, the governor cannot give you orders that defy the president, and not even the president can give force you to comply with an unlawful order. It would take some serious stones to defy orders though
National Guard listens to the state by default, as each state has its own National Guard. However, the federal government can intervene at any time and give them new orders.
I guess they’re just choosing not to do anything? IDK.
That same separation is what prevented Trump from sending in the national guard to Detroit and Oregon just because he disagreed with the protests there.
The intent to give the peoples of the state further say in the use of force in the state.
I’ll repair last chance socks and stockpile (clean) last chance underwear for long trips. Throw them out as the trip goes instead of stashing dirty laundry in your bag.
In a for profit economy; to create an upper class, you have to have an under class. Wealth isn’t created, it’s extracted through exploitation. Rich/Poor. Empire/Colony. Master/Slave.
Wake up! It’s time to wake up America and re-discover our socialist past.
I learned to sew when I was little, so I have no qualms busting out the kit to put a few stitches in something. It’s not a hard skill to pick up, and definitely something I think everyone should learn. Especially in this day and age, where everything is so damn expensive! Your stitches don’t have to be perfect, they just have to hold.
Exactly. To me throwing out clothes because they have a hole seem alike throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Most of the time a needle and some thread with fix it.
For some reason I thought that modern machine-made socks couldn’t be darned. Maybe because my understanding is that other modern clothes like pants that rip next to a seam can’t be reliably repaired? (Like, the seam holds but the fabric itself rips)
Lol that was my project last weekend with all my undies! They’re all still pretty good, but just some holes where the fabric meets the elastic, so I got out the sewing machine and knocked them out all at once. (Though I spotted one I missed yesterday of course! 😔)
The good thing about patching socks and undies is nobody sees them, so they don’t have to look good!
I take that opportunity to do a little kintsugi in them and use thread that really stands out or patch with a silly fabric. It feels fun to do that, plus when I see it pulling then out of the dresser it reminds me how much money I saved! 😁
Nurses need some fun in their lives too. They see some shit! My GF is a rad tech and does OR and trauma, and patchy drawers are hardly the craziest thing that’d roll in.
If I’m in there for something serious enough for them to see my undies, they’re just gonna cut them off anyway, so they may as well cut off a beat pair. 😉
No this is all Republican division. It’s their only playbook to rally their base. The take home message for everyone is VOTE, VOTE, VOTE. Before the election started up we had a nice quiet 2-1/2 years. This kind of shit only appeals to those that love the chaos that Trump will bring back.
It’s very tiresome. This also feels a lot more agro than interrogating a president about getting a BJ.
Why are your lunatics so energetic, crazy and numerous? They seem to be getting worse. Some BJ obsessions in the 90s. Then tea parties in the 00s. Now it’s full-blown inssurection with Texas wanting to secede.
Now that all the crazies have joined their “god army” and trundled down to the border would it be a good time to nuke them? Just wipe out all the lunatics in one go. Problem solved.
Why are your lunatics so energetic, crazy and numerous?
Simple, Russian and Chinese bots on social media designed to foment division, anger, and the destruction of western democracy. It’s the exact same thing that led to Brexit and the election of Trump. And it will get worse until we get a handle on blocking bad actors on social media.
Yep but instead of throwing them away in the trash can that’s across the house I toss them into the convenient clothes hamper and end up wearing them again
My place of work uses macs at work, I like them though I’m fairly platform agnostic. I have windows PCs for home theater use, and Linux laptops for personal use. I like macbooks but loath the complete lack of upgradability. We have so many old macs that just get scrapped. PCs are no different, but this is my workplace. If you have to buy a laptop, buy a used one and wipe it or buy a framework. Framework laptops should be upgradable for close to a decade by their vision. That’s without third party support. Support a vision for a consumer rights future or buy used IMO.
I do this with music… if one of my favourite nostalgia songs comes on and I’m not driving with the windows down in summer, it’s for sure getting skipped!
In Canada we are dealing with a housing crisis, a healthcare crisis, and a climate crisis (we still have wildfires burning in January) on top of alt-righters trying to reverse all progress that we’ve made.
So very similar to America- not quite as dramatic. Though Albertabama has been quiet for a while so I expect the Premier to do something stupid soon.
The biggest difference between these two will be the operating system. Although I strongly suspect that the MacBook is a better machine, that won’t matter as much as which OS you want to use. Unless the swappable ports are necessary in which case you already know the answer.
Portugal is dealing with a major housing crisis. Due to excessive tourism and privileges for digital nomads and foreign retirees our population is being priced out of our own country.
Everybody knows lots of people who were forced to emmigrate. Families broken apart, relationships ended, etc. Everybody has multiple stories like that. I mean EVERYBODY.
To make matters worse, tourism needs low pay workers, but there’s a lack of workers willing to live and work for 800 euros in a city where rents start at over a 1000. Instead of improving conditions for its citizens the solution was to bring in a wave of immigrants from very poor countries who are willing to work here in deplorable conditions. Right now our own capital is overrun by tourism and you can barely hear Portuguese being spoken. And it’s spreading to the other cities.
More and more people just give up and leave every day. Universities are failing to fill their quotas because it’s no longer affordable to live in their cities. Politicians and elites don’t care because they have their interests in tourism.
In the bigger cities, when you enter a shop or restaurant, you can feel the annoyance as soon as they hear you speak Portuguese because they think you won’t spend much. It’s not improving at all and the only measures we had to improve it are half-assed. Right now I’m wondering how long until I give up and leave to join the others.
Short answer: it’s hurting the country but it’s making a few people very rich.
We always welcomed visitors and we had a reputation as an hospitable people but we saw that change drastically in the last years.
Some people will criticize my complaints, that tourism brough development to degradated city centers. The fact is those city centers were renovated but not for us. We are not welcome in our own city centers. The traditional neighborhoods of Lisbon and Porto and its culture that attracted so many tourists? Dead. Those people are long gone. Dead or pushed out of the city. Those traditional neighborhoods were Fado was born? Gone. Every last house is an Airbn’b now.
Lisbon is pretty much a Portuguese Theme Park. If you want to experience its culture you won’t find it there. Save your money. Porto is well on its way to be as bad. Braga will get there too.
Portugal, unlike most of Europe, used to be a 100% homogeneous country. There were no national minorities. We have Roma people but they’re considered just as Portuguese as the others. Right now, 20% of the population are foreigners from digital nomads to third world immigrants. I wouldn’t care much if they weren’t taking the place of nationals who are being driven out. And it’s increasing. Some would call it colonisation but I guess we’re in the wrong continent.
Open Facebook and it’s full of ads trying to sell retirement in Portugal to Americans. And they’re coming in droves, some attracted by our universal Healthcare that we pay for while they barely pay taxes. Those ads selling paradise and completely ignoring the fact there are people already living here is so reminiscent of the old ads convincing white settlers to come to African colonies, it’s disgusting.
