I mean, I don’t throw them away immediately, I wash them and put them in the rag bag. There’s always something needs a disposable bit of fabric to handle. Socks are great for dusting, as an example. Pull it over your hand, wipe things down, and Bob’s your uncle.

Anticorp,

How did you know that I have an Uncle Bob?

jqubed,

We all have an uncle Bob

Is… is it the same guy?

I’m psychotic

Usernameblankface, in Anyone else do "last chance socks"?
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

I do this, but because I don’t like throwing out clean clothes. It takes a few rounds of accidentally washing the worn out item before I’ll throw it away while it’s clean.

thisismyhaendel,

Haha, I wish I were this way, I feel weird not washing clothes one more time before throwing them off, as almost a goodbye ritual

Usernameblankface,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

Your way is fine, too. I think I’m being unreasonable by insisting they should be dirty at the moment they’re thrown out.

Krudler, (edited ) in What software do you wish that existed?

Mapping software that can give directions the way human navigator would.

When I’m driving in my own city, my mapping software should be intelligent enough to know that I am aware of most of the roads; it can track me.

I don’t need to hear

“Keep straight on Highway 101 West signs for Highway 101 West for 300m, then take exit 104 South signs for Highway 104 South, take exit 104A South signs for 104 South, merge onto Highway 104 South signs for 104 South. Go straight on Highway 104 South for 400m then take the left lane and turn left on route 40 Eastbound signs for route 40. Boodle-ding you are on the correct route. In 200m turn left onto route 40 Eastbound signs for route 40 Eastbound. Turn left onto route 40 Eastbound signs for route 40 Eastbound.”

… When what is needed in a realistic sense is the following:

“In 300m take the exit to 104 Southbound then after 400 m, turn left at the first set of lights onto route 40”

____,

That would be a meaningful improvement. I moved - basically sight unseen - a year ago to a new town. Day one I needed every bit of turn by turn. Now, if I’m headed to any of the four or five places I bother to go, I just set up the map as a CYA and a simple “yep, make that turn you’re planning on” would be sufficient.

Then there’s a 90 minute trip i make every two weeks, that I know fairly well but not like I’d know a daily drive. The first hour is “Jump on 74 west, take exit for 57 south, and go a ways”. That part I have down cold obv.

After I get onto hwy 36 tho, damned if I can remember where the (poorly marked) left turn onto CR 1300 is.

Better still would be an adaptive mode. Leave me tf alone with my CCR playlist until I’m within a couple miles of that poorly marked turn. THEN help me out with a gentle reminder.

The hour or so of instructions prior to that point are wasted and would be pretty easy for AI to figure out I don’t need help on that part.

GlendatheGayWitch,

That’s kind of what the old Google Maps did 20 years ago. Now Google Maps will yell you to exit a highway in order to stay on that highway.

Krudler,

Sadly, that description was motivated by a direct experience I had a few days ago with Google maps.

But I’ve definitely had that other experience as well, where the next leg of the trip is to go straight for 20 minutes, and Google Maps chimes-in every 30 seconds to remind me to stay straight.

The most recent meaningful upgrade I have seen in the software is that instead of deciding to either play each piece of audio through the phone speaker or the Bluetooth, quite at random, it will now play things through the Bluetooth. Livin’ in 2024.

Shit your pants during dance class. All possibility is dead.

XEAL, in How do I stop a crush from developing further?

From my own experience: cut all contact with that person… which may not be viable in your situation.

throwawaysalami,

So it’s either quit dancing or develop romantic feelings for her? Q.E.D. I’m fucked.

scytale,

I mean, you can find a new dance instructor.

RootBeerGuy,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Yeah, salami, can you just switch classes? Or another dance studio, same course or something?

throwawaysalami, (edited )

Yeah that’s actually not that bad of an idea. If things go south I’ll use this as a last resort. Change dance studios that is.

JohnDClay, in Framework vs Macbook laptop?

Funny, I was just watching something about framework! It’s got some discussion of various framework reviews and the pros and cons of the machine.

www.youtube.com/live/KDIXNRgnDWQ/?t=21m49s

With framework being a new company, looks like they’re working out some bugs, but they’re doing it quickly and transparently. The laptop costs more per performance than other options, but since you can upgrade it down the line, you can save money in the long run.

Compared to a MacBook, it really depends on the applications you use. Video editing is likely going to be better on mac, but good luck trying to game on it. Mac has better battery life, but you’ll pay an arm and a leg to repair anything, sometimes being cheaper to buy a whole new machine than pay their exorbitant prices.

So it all depends on the use case, but I’d go with framework. I care that the company isn’t adversarial, and it would work for what I use a laptop for.

WoahWoah, (edited ) in If Trump loses in 2024, do you think he'd run in 2028?

Remember: narcissists are psychologically incapable of imagining themselves no longer existing. He thinks he’ll live forever because he literally can’t conceive of any other possibility.

invertedspear, in Framework vs Macbook laptop?

Having an iPhone won’t make Mac any easier, but it will be more integrated. Lots of nice convenience features like a shared note library and your text messages can be interacted with from the laptop.

Not sure what the cost difference is, but considering your other messages were talking about starting out on the path of cybersecurity, a more open platform that you can run Linux off of would probably trump the conveniences.

Alivrah, in Lemmy, is there a treasured piece of content that you stop yourself from going back to "too often" so as to not dilute it?

Some books and mangas, but mostly the Ghibli movies. Specially because when I watch one of them, I immediately want to go on a full Ghibli marathon.

They’re beautiful.

kratoz29,
@kratoz29@lemm.ee avatar

They’re beautiful.

In which aspects are you finding them beautiful?

Don’t get me wrong I am not a hater whatsoever, but I started watching them with my girlfriend recently and I’m not feeling it completely, I only watched Spirited Away before and I have the same feeling.

We have watched so far (in this order):

  1. The Boy and The Heron
  2. Princess Mononoke (this one was my favorite)
  3. How’s Castle
  4. My Neighbor Totoro

The art design is top notch I can agree with that.

WeLoveCastingSpellz, in Framework vs Macbook laptop?

Just go with framework, it is going to better in every single way, I would probably install linux on it if I were you. (you expressed your concerns about microaoft being an evil corporation)

Socks with holes would drive me crazy during the day, so I’d just put on another pair and trash them personally

neidu2, (edited ) in Other than Lemmy, what are you doing tonight?

One of my kids is currently attending a birthday party at the local trampoline park, so as I’m the driver I’m currently playing chess and writing this post while waiting. By the time I get home it’s time to herd half of my offsprings to bed, after which I have a few beers waiting for me, as well as a savegame in Songs of Syx I started on yesterday.

Oh, and I finally found a replacement wrist band that fits my Garmin watch today, so I’m replacing it at some point during the evening.

Removing the stress of financial insecurity? Having enough income to seek professional and medical support? Of course it would help.

sentient_loom,
@sentient_loom@sh.itjust.works avatar

Professional help is overrated. But to the extent that it does help, it should be part of Healthcare, which should be publicly funded anyway.

Removing the stress of financial insecurity would surely help a lot.

ULS, (edited )

Yeah, I have done some therapy but in my mind there’s always something telling me that the therapy isn’t for the sake of humanity, it’s just for the sake of making honest living people functional in a world literally built to not allow or incorporate them into society. A lot of people’s benefits to good and society go unseen or not manifested because of this.

ULS,

I didn’t really mean seeking professional help. While that would be a good thing, what I meant is the problems wouldn’t have arisen in the first place.
