Had a cat before that did the same thing. Except, it was more of a “you are using the bathroom, so I need to as well. And I want to maintain eye contact the entire time.” (The litter box was in the bathroom)
actually, that’s a great argument. They always poo with you watching, they might as well assume that’s how things should be. Seems like a learned behavior.
