Sarcasmo220, in Look at that fragmentation!

My distro didn’t make the cut. That meme is just the tip of the iceberg…

dukk,

Let me guess: Hannah Montana?

Sarcasmo220,

That one is my side OS 😆 . My main is Nitrux.

Which one of the blue As is arch?

i think the one next to debian

CaptPretentious, in AMA

What are the important, distinguishing differences between RHEL8 and REHL9 one should probably know.

laurelraven,

One is divisible by 3 and not 2, and the other is divisible by 2 and not 3

This is very important when checking if your software packages are compatible

0x4E4F,
@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

Correct!

loudWaterEnjoyer,
@loudWaterEnjoyer@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Explain this

laurelraven,

That is a high compatibility version for when you need to work with many different softwares at once

loudWaterEnjoyer,
@loudWaterEnjoyer@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

But it’s 4.5, which is like (9 ÷ 2) so that kinda contradicts your first statement, doesn’t it?

laurelraven,

Not at all! Since it’s half of 9, it can therefore work with half of the software RHEL 9 is compatible with, but since the 4 is also divisible by 2, it can handle all of that software as well.

It’s really quite simple, I don’t see how this could be confusing at all…

AceFuzzLord, in Look at that fragmentation!

Variety is the spice of life.

LesserAbe, in What do you guys do when you want to run unmaintained programs?

Maybe I’m missing something or don’t know how to use wine, but more than 50% of the time if I try to run an old windows program it doesn’t work.

LesserAbe,

Also guess I should say my solution is to run a virtual Windows machine on my Ubuntu laptop

renzev, (edited )

Wine tends to work better for Wndows programs that already have a Linux port, because they depend on fewer mcrosoft-specific libraries… which is not very helpful most of the time, but it is the subject matter of the meme.

Falcon, in What do you guys do when you want to run unmaintained programs?

Well to clarify the two big differences here are that the exe is pre compiled and maybe dynamic libraries.

Heavy tech stacks do suck though

Falcon, (edited ) in Look at that fragmentation!

I wish there was more variety.

You basically have BSD and Linux and in the Linux space {glibc/musl systemd/openrc/runit PKGBUILD,ebuild,deb,rpm} which seems like a lot but it’s the really niche stuff that’s fun to pull apart and play with.

What is the best distro and why is it Debian?

0x4E4F, (edited )
@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

Because Debbie is a woman, and we all know why Ian made it the best distro, happy wife happy life.

foggianism,

My favorite Metallica song is Seek an Destro.

0x4E4F,

Seek and Distro 🤨?

eldain,

That is true! I assume Debra had Debbie as a nickname sometimes, full points.

@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

All Debras are called Debbie.

No, Lemmy Kilmister.

0x4E4F,
@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

You can always catch them off guard by using the Lemmy logo as an avatar 😉.

Resol,
@Resol@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, no.

The avatar I’m currently using is actually related to my username in one way or another. Just do a reverse image search, and then spell the first word of my username backwards and you’ll understand what I mean.

So I’m basically a loser from the fediverse.

0x4E4F,
@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

Well, you’d be the first loser musician, I can tell you that much 👍.

Resol,
@Resol@lemmy.world avatar

Evil_Shrubbery,

Yes, that was the “musician” part of the reference. The engineer part was to bring it back to bird form.

Why do Linux users hate Nvidia?

0x4E4F,
@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

Because Nvidia hates Linux users. They’re just returning the favor.

Tartas1995,

That is surprisingly accurate

VinesNFluff,

0x4E4F,
@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

The Asynchronious Packaging Template simply collects shit from other people that were kind enough to make that shit for apt. The get part is recursive, it tries numerious times till it gets what it wants.

Crashumbc,

I haven’t used vim since collage (I’m currently a aarp member) isn’t it “cntrl-x” ?

ReveredOxygen,
@ReveredOxygen@sh.itjust.works avatar

Crashumbc,

Pretty sure nano didn’t exist in 93’ oh well

gentooer,

But pico did and nano is built to emulate pico.

loudWaterEnjoyer,

So someone suggested to me that Linux is amazing for gaming.

I decided to split boot and installed Mint and attempted to play Forza Horizon 5. It literally runs like a potato. Also my Logitech steering wheel doesn’t work and has major input lag.

Since you know so little about Linux, my question is what are you having for dinner?

0x4E4F,
@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

Have no idea, still haven’t had breakfast…

AProfessional,

I don’t use a wheel but FH5 does work well here.

jaschen,

I think my Nvidia mobile 3070ti card is being funky. I think I got it to run better after trying some ideas online, but there are lag spikes and the steering wheel still didn’t work. Just deleted Mint and decided against Linux gaming for now

AProfessional,

FWIW i played it on Linux launch week on a 3080, it actually crashed less than on my Windows install. But that’s fair there are a lot of variables that could cause issues.

nogrub,

i gues you use an laptop with that i guess you have an integrated gpu and one for offloading that leads to my question do you use prime-run ?

jaschen,

I was getting Prime-run not found. I forgot what else I did, but finally got it working. The lag spikes made it a bit unplayable esp since this setup is for my dedicated racing simulator.

What is a bootloader and why would anyone want to load boots?

BleatingZombie,

You load your boots after installing Java in the the morning
