Godort, in She speaks from the fart

Farts are universally funny. Like sex jokes, they transcend time and language.

In fact, the oldest joke we have discovered was a fart joke:

Something which has never occurred since time immemorial… A young woman did not fart in her husband’s lap.

Compare that to a different joke from about 200 years later:

A dog entered into a tavern and said, 'I cannot see anything. I shall open this one

It doesn’t matter where or when you’re from, nor does it matter what language you speak, farts are funny and will continue to be funny forever.

AngrilyEatingMuffins,

I used perplexity to find some more ancient fart jokes

One example of an ancient fart joke can be found in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. In the Miller’s Tale, two characters, Nicholas and Absalom, are competing for the same girl. Nicholas decides to humiliate his rival by waiting at the window for Absalom to beckon the girl. Just when he does, Nicholas lets out a fart with a noise as loud as a clap of thunder, almost overcoming Absalom with its force.

Another example from classical times appeared in "Apocolocyntosis" or "The Pumpkinification of Claudius," a satire attributed to Seneca on the late Roman emperor. In this text, a character named Nicholas lets out a fart as great as a thunderclap, which almost blinds the person struck by it.

The medieval Latin joke book "Facetiae" by Poggio Bracciolini also includes six tales about farting, although the specific jokes are not detailed in the search results

I’m assuming the bread pumpernickel which literally means “farting Nicholas” must be related to these jokes. Why does Nicholas always fart?

Black616Angel,

Apple will have a USB-C connector (capable of fast charging tech), but will only support slow 5V charging (for most non-apple chargers?)…

JaN0h4ck,

is this confirmed or just a rumor? can’t find any sources atm

PM_ME_FEET_PICS,

It’s false information. It will support fast charging but have slow data transfer.

flashgnash,

Who uses a cable for data transfer anymore anyway though

black0ut,
@black0ut@pawb.social avatar

It’s faster than network data transfer. I don’t know exactly how fast can WiFi go, but most if the time it can’t even exceed 1Gbps. However, USB-C 4 V2 can reach 80 Gbps, and isn’t all that affected by electromagnetic interference.

For transfering a few photos, you won’t notice a difference. But if you need to back up a 256 GB phone, the difference in speed is actually big.

jimmydoreisalefty, in I hope you have a wonderful night!

I admire the steady hand and time required to get it to look that neat!

saltnotsugar, in If Harry Potter was set 50 years earlier

“Blimey Harry! This panzerfaust looks wicked,” Ron said. “Come along you two. We need to hold this bridge for three hours,” Hermione barked from the Tiger tank. Harry had never seen such bullshit before, and thought this whole magic business seemed rather bothersome.

riodoro1, in 🇪🇺 How the EU Feels about

Well they can go fuck themselves. Even if they pass it and messenger or whatsapp start (as in they totally dont already) scanning your chats and snitching I wonder how they are going to force other messaging services to comply.

Serdan,

They can’t. It’s unenforceable.

ruination,

I’d imagine if, say Signal, refuses to comply and gets banned from the EU, one could always use a VPN. I think that nothing short of either a full global ban or implementing a version of The Great Wall of China would allow these ridiculous laws to be enforced. Even then, there will always be ways around it for those willing to go the extra mile.

Ferk,
@Ferk@lemmy.ml avatar

Why not just go for Tox or some other P2P serverless communication system? They can’t ban / go after a system that has no central servers, can they?

ReversalHatchery, in 🇪🇺 How the EU Feels about

We need to collect the list of names of every politican and such who has advocated for this. These humans are dangerous to society, and we need to be on the lookout regarding what are they doing next. We also need to raise awareness about them so that given the chance, they can be removed from positions of power.

gareins,

Somebody must have already… anyone did any googling?

Jay, in A King regardless

Some people, like me, enjoy life more If they are at least somewhat physically fit.

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

There’s shredded people with double chins. Studies show people who are of overweight BMI (not obese) have the longest lifespan anyway. Let people live.

Jay,

That’s what I mean too: Blanket statements are nonsense. Of course, this applies in both directions.

lte678,

After some cursory research ([1] among other meta-analyses), this does not seem to be true below the age of 80. Could you cite a source?

[1] doi.org/10.1016/S0140-6736(16)30175-1

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

Sure!

jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/…/1555137

Relative to normal weight, both obesity (all grades) and grades 2 and 3 obesity were associated with significantly higher all-cause mortality. Grade 1 obesity overall was not associated with higher mortality, and overweight was associated with significantly lower all-cause mortality.

lte678,

Thanks! Both look like very decent studies so I am not certain where the difference comes from. I suspect that the division into age brackets, or averaging across all of the them may be the cause. Either way, it seems that the effects of being slightly overweight are barely statistically significant. The more you know

Sprite,
@Sprite@lemmy.ml avatar

If I’ve read it correctly, being overweight is “healthier” for longevity. My understanding of science is that being overweight isn’t unhealthy, quite the opposite, but its closeness to obesity is the true danger. So it is healthy to be “overweight” according to BMI, but it’s close to being obese, which is very unhealthy, so if you don’t watch yourself, you could hurt yourself. Aiming to be in the high “normal” BMI or low “overweight” BMI is probably the most reasonable approach. But it may be more difficult for people who build muscle to tell what that is for them.

snail_hatan,

You simply feel better. Good on ya

MindSkipperBro12,

We’re not like you

Jay,

I just mean that it seems kind of strange to equate looking somewhat unhealthy with enjoying your life.

BruceTwarzen,

I just like to ve out of breath when i mount my mobility scooter

flicker,

Oh it would.

I feel better being more fit because a lot of my interests (and my job) are very physical, and being as large as I am now makes doing the things I enjoy doing more difficult.

Not everyone has those interests or that type of work, and that's okay, too. We all have value.

Jay,

That’s exactly how I see it. One should not generalize. However, that is what is done in this picture.

Keanu was on vacation when this photo was taken. He was literally trying to enjoy life. Stop making this a bigger thing than it is.
