seitanic, in unholy software..
@seitanic@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I’ve been using Linux for almost 20 years, and I can’t remember the last time I had to stress over drivers. Of course, I always check Linux compatibility when I buy hardware.

Marketsupreme,

I’m embarrassed to say I’m a SE and don’t know anything about Linux. What makes it worth using over windows?

rasensprenger,

Linux by itself is just a kernel, there’s a whole range of operating systems using it. Most of them have some commonalities, but there are also huge differences. Most of them can run directly from a USB stick (or in a VM obviously), so you can try some out.

Some things that basically all of them do very well, compared to windows:

  • mainly open source components (± some proprietary drivers and apps, if you want)
  • no ads in the OS
  • support for very old hardware, being (depending on actual OS more or less) light and resource efficient
  • very good package management
  • customizability

There are many things that are specific to some OSes. I switched from Windows 10 years ago, and I can’t see myself going back. Everytime I have to use it somewhere, I get annoyed quickly.

There are some drawbacks:

  • software has to be built against a specific kernel, and some proprietary software is not offered for linux. There are compatability layers for running windows software on linux without emulation, but they are mainly optimized for games (I’ve had windows-only games run faster on linux than on windows!).
  • some drivers are unavailable for linux, as the device manufacturers have to cooperate somewhat. However, almost everything will work.
  • some drivers are available, but require binary blobs distributed by the manufacturer. The proprierary NVidia drivers, for example, are faster than the open source reimplementation noveau, but they can cause problems with some software like sway. If you have an AMD gpu, their open source drivers are great, so no problems.

Roughly all the servers (including Microsofts own cloud), half the mobile systems, lots of the larger embedded stuff and some small percentage of deksktop systems are using Linux. Again, just try something (maybe Pop!_OS or Mint) and see if you like it.

A monster

Ghyste,

Bingo.

papel, in Facts dont care about your feelings.

Democracy is incompatible with power concentration. Excessive wealth easily translates into power, thus, it breaks the balance of any democracy.

There’s also a saying that “Democracy cannot exist while people are hungry”, because a common complaint is that “poor people vote with their stomachs”.

coffeebiscuit,

And rich people with their wallet.

Cabunach,

I don’t see what makes these things incapable of being present at the same time as democracy.

Seems like these statements are based on feelings, not actual reasoning.

FaeDrifter,

Let me use an example. Let’s say you’re my partner, and it’s movie night. I give you a choice between two movies: Star Wars, and Harry Potter. However, if you choose Harry Potter for movie night, I will actually break both your hands with a sledgehammer.

I say I’m giving you a choice, but do you actually have a fair choice?

Cabunach,

I don’t see how that’s an adequate example.

It seems like you’re making a bad attempt at a caricature instead of actually explaining.

FaeDrifter,

Not even a caricature because getting your hands broken is actually still not as bad as starving to death.

desconectado,

People choose policies that might be beneficial in the short term, but very harmful on the long way. For example, restricting immigration might have a favourable short term impact on wages, but in the long term it will stagnate the economy and pensions schemes, and make people even more poor.

So… People who are hungry will vote for whatever brings food to their table today, so they don’t really have a choice, because those policies or politicians are not actually on their side, they are just benefiting from the misery of others.

It's all well and good until you wake up, and you're in Epping!

johnthedoe,

Doesn’t matter where you live. Epping sounds far as shit.

r00ty,
@r00ty@kbin.life avatar

I did it on the circle line once. Woke up at Hammersmith. Luckily though I was going to Paddington, so it wasn't the worst trip back. Epping, on the other hand...

FarFarAway,

Did this on a bus once. My college roommate and I went to London for spring break. We randomly got on the bus to see what the suburbs were like. We only planned on staying on for an hour or so, but fell asleep and 3 hours later ended up at the end of the line in who knows where.

Thankfully there was one last bus that was headed back to Central London, or we would have been screwed. Of course it was express, so it only took 45 mins to get back.

Pretty sure they did us a favor.

VikingHippie,

Epping sounds like the kind of town people don’t even live in on purpose. They just missed their stop and was so embarrassed that they moved there rather than admit their mistake.

Breaks up more families than war and infidelity combined!

Reminds me of a scene in Weeds where Doug and Andy are discussing a porn movie:

Doug: I must have watched it more than a dozen times! Never to the end, though

Andy: that’s a glowing endorsement!

SaltyIceteaMaker, in don't know, don't care

Im neither a Christian nor a bible expert but i thought satan was just one of 7 deadly sins and not the punisher of bad people? Wasn’t there an entity called “the devil” that is referred to as satan and/or lucifer but is basically an entire different entity to lucifer and satan? Also isn’t hell a general place of suffering/redemption and the deadly sins are just luring people there?

That’s how i understood it. Didn’t read the bilbe tho, only got this from references and random fun “facts” over the years so it could be completely wrong

Custoslibera, in Why is Hummus attacking Israel? Is he stupid?

This is the right level of spice in a meme.

ninjan, in Simple Truth

It’s true for both sides as they both can’t tolerate one another.

I see no possible solution without a third power establishing a wide ass DMZ between the two and make sure the zone fucks over both equally. Ideally they’ll stop hating each other and focus on the DMZ being ass. Might give us relative peace for like a decade or two.

Jaytreeman,

Those territories are so small that a dmz might just be the entire area....

ninjan,

Exactly, surely both will hate it. Classic parenting, if you can’t play nice no one can have it, puts toy on shelf. The really expensive part is building the infrastructure needed on the little space left to house all the people displaced. But hey work for a shit ton of people

TheBlue22, in Double standards or something, I don't know...

You can’t compare these 2 conflicts at all.

Everythingispenguins, (edited )

Why? Because the west supports the occupied in one and the occupier in the other? Don’t forget the west expected Ukraine to be an occupied state with a gorilla insurgency within a few weeks at the start of the conflict.

Edit: because I am getting the expected hate. The Palestinians didn’t start out as Hamas. The extremism of Hamas was born out of the lack of action from former moderates. People will always become more extreme when they are met with a lack of action. That goes for the left and the right.

So ask yourself if someone came to your house and told you to leave how angry would you be? If you don’t understand this look up the actions of the Israeli settlements.

TheBlue22,

Because Ukraine is not committing brutal crimes, not lobbing rockets randomly, hoping to kill anyone, civilian or not. Not hoping to eradicate their enemy (that is the stated goal of Hamas). Ukraine government is not in power because of violence, but because they were voted in. Hamas is in power only because they have weapons and other palestinians don’t (given to them by other extremist Muslims, who want to see Jews die).

So let me say it again, this conflict is not fucking comparable.

Everythingispenguins,

But Israel will do exactly that. If you want to condemn the killing of innocent people. You need to do it to both sides.

jpost.com/…/UNHRC-IDF-may-have-committed-war-crim…

www.nytimes.com/…/gaza-israel-children.html

hrw.org/…/west-bank-spike-israeli-killings-palest…

TheBlue22,

I am not pro Israel. You are just assuming that for no fuckig reason.

Israel is committing what could be easily called genocide in Gaza. Moving settlers in, pushing palestinians away from their homes, killing their kids, their fathers. Doing who knows what else.

I am against Zionist Israel and against Hamas.

I am for a state for both Jews and Palestinians.

You can have that position.

Unlike the Ukranian conflict, both of the fighting sides are in the wrong. There should be no fighting to begin with. Only innocents suffer.

Album,
@Album@lemmy.ca avatar

Yup don’t let them gaslight you buddy. This is how they do it.

Everythingispenguins,

Well then just ask yourself is a meme about the conflicts themselves or about the west’s condemnation of one powers imperialism while supporting the imperialism of another?

BustinJiber, (edited )

The meme has total of four words. How are you arriving at any conclusion on what the meme is about? It’s not even proper spelling according to Google translate.

Phrodo_00,

I know what you mean and I also find western support of Israel appalling, but the meme is literally about the lack of support to Hamas, which makes sense given how they also like to randomly kill civilians.

BustinJiber,

How does the meme have anything to do with Hamas?

Jakeroxs,

Because timing probably

TheBlue22,

Did I make the meme? Am I the west or something? For all you know, I could not even be in the global west.

Not once have I supported the imperialism, I called what’s Israel is doing a genocide for crying out loud.

Get a fucking reality check buddy.

Everythingispenguins,

Why are you so angry? I am not or ever attacking you. I never said you made the meme or where you live. Sorry for presenting you with an opinion that differs from yours.

TheBlue22,

Not angry, simply annoyed. Mostly because you keep assuming shit, preaching stuff that’s incredibly well known, especially in leftist circles and conflating 2 completely separate conflicts together as if they have any similarities.

Unlike you, I did think about the meme, and it makes absolutely no sense in reality we live in.

Everythingispenguins,

I never assumed anything about you and I definitely didn’t swear at you.

azulavoir,
