Jorgelino, in Earth has a cold

Why would you be hoping for a cold winter in brazil right now? We’re nearing summer.

Gabu,

Our summers aren’t supposed to be anywhere near this hot, and it’s still spring.

Siegfried,

Its still fucking spring and im getting sun burns just from the ten minutes walk to my job, what the fuck is happening.

Jorgelino,

Still shouldn’t be expecting winter in late spring.

Melody, (edited ) in Skipping along, missing most of the beats...

Just because someone skips a track doesn’t mean that track was wrong for that playlist. It just means the time was wrong for that track. The mood.

I don’t know if anyone else has noticed; but “Shuffle” used to be a good thing! Now; it frequently just isn’t good at it’s job. There’s no control over the “Randomness” of the shuffle anymore, and there’s no way to turn off any “Algorithm” that promises it can pick the next song better than random shuffling can.

Sometimes that experience of a truly random or an algorithmic shuffle is good; and sometimes it delivers bad options, and being able to say “Nah, I’m just not into this track today, NEXT!” is something I regard as a fundamental right, and something that you too, should do. Skips shouldn’t be precious actions. Your mental heath shouldn’t be impacted by an unlucky shuffle, nor should your mood.

Music is a deep, and almost primal form of expression; and it can express many things. Sooo…Being able to skip the emotional equivalent of a 💩 pile of poo 💩 is actually pretty important…even if it doesn’t 🌹 always (metaphorically) smell 🌸 like poo to you all the time.

Knusper, (edited )

I was only vaguely aware of the algorithm on Spotify and that not being allowed to skip very often is a thing there, and man, this comment read like a completely deranged monologue from some sort of alternative, dystopian reality.

SternburgExport,

algorithm… not being able to skip… Glad I went back to a dedicated mp3 player.

Vuraniute,
@Vuraniute@thelemmy.club avatar

OOTL here, Spotify hasnt done that for me yet.

Knusper, (edited )

I think, it’s only in the free version of Spotify. So, if you’re paying for Spotify Premium, you wouldn’t have that problem.

But I mean, I’m obviously completely out of the Spotify loop, so definitely take that one with a grain of salt…

Random shuffle really wants me to listen to a specific group of songs on revanced music.

Doesnt matter if I’m listening to rock, musicals, soundtracks, or medieval versions of “pumped up kicks”, it always brings me back to a handful of pop songs after one or two songs.

InfiniWheel,

I remember when I used spotify and it just kept insisting on putting and seemingly prioritizing popular pop songs in its generated playlists if I ever liked just one or two. Even in my own playlist if prioritized them a lot over the songs I did hear over and over again. And like, why??

baltakatei, (edited )

I am fond of a partial shuffle algorithm I wrote in Bash for my music playlists that often preserves neighbors of the input list in the output list.

Image

  • Blue: input sequence.
  • Red: complete shuffle.
  • Green: partial shuffle.

The result is like skipping through my media library in order but occasionally randomly enabling shuffle to jump to a new place. Since the input list clumps albums together and since albums often have a similar vibe, if I want several similar songs of a particular feel to play one after another, I just have to manually advance through the outputted playlist until I hit a song that has what I’m looking for; then I can let the playlist continue automatically since each subsequent song is likely to be similar to the previous song (until another random jump occurs).

Melody,

Nice. Once upon a time Winamp had a functional preferences slider that controlled the “Shuffle Morph Rate” and I can imagine it likely used a similar algorithm to shuffle.

I only wish this existed in more software in general…and that music players would let you select what method the randomization is achieved with.

member list swipe being missing is a problem

not being able to swipe from dm to dm list is a problem

performance is a MUCH BIGGER problem than either of these, my galaxy s9+ should NOT be on its knees begging for for forgiveness by using a fucking chat app.

the prior two can be easily fixed, but the performance is really concerning. ill be using aliucord until they sort that stuff out anyway, new app is pretty but unfortunately flawed

AMDIsOurLord,

I always wondered what the FUCK are Discord doing with their shitty client app. Like, how bad is their whole Electron React bullshit going that their performance is so bad. At this point rewriting it in something native would be less bother than fixing this shit

GyozaPower, in venture capitalism goes brrr

A good change imo. Never made sense to me, both in desktop and mobile that DMs are located right with the server list. I don’t use it as much, but when I use it, it’s precisely for DMs, so I think it’s a change for the better. Some people complaining like they change every single part of the UI should touch some grass, sometimes change isn’t a bad thing.

Nahdahar,

Agreed. It will take a second to unlearn the muscle memory but separating it was a good idea.

Literally. I saw the title, thought it was interesting, tried to read it, found out it was not interesting unless you're a boy scout or you really like the Foxfire series.

“Field promotions” we used to call them. I have done the management thing, I was “okay” at it, but it wasn’t my passion.

kambusha,

When I was studying for PMP, I remember there was even a term for this. Because you’re good at one thing, it was expected that you would be good at something else as well, not taking into consideration that managing people is completely different from the domain they were an expert on. Of course, sometimes it helps to have some previous domain knowledge to be able to lead a specific team, but that doesn’t mean it’s automatic.

What companies really need to realise is that there should be different promotion tracks, and some of them are individualistic, i.e. being promoted as an expert in their field, rather than being promoted to have to manage people.

I have a small team, and it’s up to me to use them to magnify my effectiveness with my work. It’s actually kind of a good spot, but I’m worried I’ll be asked to do more management stuff

    Found the opener.

    don,

    Fuckin openers, man.

vivadanang, in Well that's one way to ruin my day

dump a cup of baking soda and a cup of white wine vinegar, wash again, they’ll be fine.

    flamehenry,

I see this often. Does this work better than just washing again with tablets? Or even just a water wash?

    Trollception,

    Washing with tablets?

    Patches,

Brah you shouldn’t be using tide pods regardless. They’re no good for your wallet or the environment.

    flamehenry,

How so? I guess they are more expensive but I can afford like $2 per pack for the convenience of just throwing them in. Am I doing it wrong? Serious question

    Patches,

Tide Pods use what is known as PVA plastic as the ‘dissolvable plastic’. PVA exactly what they mean by microplastics and forever chemicals.

    youtu.be/Ll6-eGDpimU?si=O7dEHbocXoqqZbW-

    flamehenry,

Thanks. The brand I use is an eco one that does not use any plastic packaging at all, only cardboard. The pod film is bio-degradable too

I don’t use them myself but sort of get why people use dishwasher tablets, but laundry pods/tabs make zero sense to me. Not all loads are the same size.

    Patches,

For Dishwasher Tablets. This goes into way more depth than ya need but they skip a whole ass wash cycle - which is why there are 2 places for your soap in your dishwasher.

    TheOakTree,

I’ve been using detergent “sheets” which are easy to cut up and portion depending on load size. No plastics either!

    vivadanang,

washing anything that got moldy (like cloth napkins from the kitchen that sat in the hamper) / funky - I use a solid tablet detergent (blue land plastic free) and a baking soda / vinegar. works great.

    Hobart_the_GoKart,

Vinegar and baking soda will cancel each other out. I would just use regular white distilled vinegar, don’t need to use the fancy stuff on it.

    vivadanang,

they react, they don’t equalize, and the results do a fine job of cleaning / removing smells. look, I’m not going to try to convince you your understanding of chemistry is incorrect, but try it before you knock it.
